  1. What are the schools? It's difficult to form an opinion with such vague details. But at any rate, if the UK school doesn't give you funding and I were you, then I would not go if I had to pay.
  2. And in most schools even if you are a native speaker of a language you still have to take the exam.
  3. I would think so. Ask your advisor or dgs.
  4. I'm a native Spanish speaker and I'm using that for my requirement, but I've been thinking about taking the summer after my first year to take an intensive French course.
  5. That's over seven years old though. A lot has changed since then.
  6. NYU has absolutely no teaching requirements. If you choose to teach (at NYU), which you can do starting the 2nd year I believe, then you get paid extra for that teaching.
  7. I made my decision official a week ago! For a variety of reasons, NYU is the best choice. Of course, having made that decision brings on a whole new set of anxieties and I haven't slept in days.
  8. At my undergraduate institution, a large state school, nearly all graduate students in history are funded through TAship, there are also school that fund their graduation students exclusively through fellowships, so there are holes in that logic. My funding is through a fellowship with no teaching commitments (that's the case for all the grad students in the department), but I do plan to teach a bit either for the school with extra compensation (what most students do), or as an adjunct in a local community college (some of the current students with whom I spoke do this). For me, more than experience for the job market, it's about finding out whether I actually enjoy teaching and want to pursue a traditional academic career. I know someone who very early on in her graduate student career realized she absolutely despised teaching and never wanted to do it again. She changed her focus and is concentration on historical preservation and museum studies with the view of going into such a career after graduation. I'm not dead set on academia and would entertain going into public history or government work.
  9. My UMich waitlist notification didn't even have my name, it just had some place holder in brackets. A few minutes later they sent another with the correction. Others mentioned theirs was the same.
  10. What, you don't wish me luck an success?
  11. I hope you're right, otherwise it'll be along 5 to 7 years!
  12. I email my POI on Tuesday with the news that I had accepted the offer of admission, now it's Saturday and I still haven't heard anything back. The same thing happened when I tried to make contact prior to applying; I actually never heard back at all that time. This worries me.
  13. I just got a very nice email from a professor at Michigan (still not in) and now I'm second guessing my decision a little bit. Rats! Logically, I know I made the right choice all things considered, but still.
  14. No, I only got on the waiting list for Michigan. The other ones were outright rejections.
  15. I'd take a PhD at Brown over an MA at Yale.
  16. The History subforum also has a thread with an editable spreadsheet for funding info. My funding package is for 5 years but only includes 3 summers (with specific monetary amounts), which leaves me with the summer after the 1st year to fend for myself. At the prospective student weekend I think I understood that the department does something in that summer to cover students but I could have misheard. I don't know what I'm going to do, but I'm also not reliant only on my income (I have a husband), which definitely helps my peace of mind. I do think I will try to get some sort of funding for that summer though because we'll be in a very high cost area so every bit counts. I had another offer that didn't specify summer amounts at all.
  17. Most of the schools I looked into had their placement information on the website. Placement rates for specific professors is a bit trickier to find.
  18. I'm sorry, I disagree. You have every right to complain and every right to be down. You do not nee to apologize for this.
  19. I find myself on a waiting list too. For many reasons, including that I did not want to be anyone's last resort, I have decided to accept an offer at another school without waiting on the waiting list results. The school I accepted has done a very good job at courting me, and the faculty have been nothing but enthusiastic about having me. It helps that it was one of my top choices, but it's not all that matters. The waiting list people can take me or leave me, which is definitely off putting.
  20. It is not necessarily the curry paste that makes for a spicy curry, you also need to add other things to it. The best curry specific cookbook, imo, is Ultimate Curry Bible by Madhur Jaffrey. It has curry recipes from all over the world, including Thai. It also has a lot of historical information. You can also find curry paste recipes here. I LOVE it. http://www.amazon.com/Madhur-Jaffreys-Ultimate-Curry-Bible/dp/0091874157/ref=sr_1_1
  21. Wait, you are already here (as per your avatar info).
  22. If FIU brings you over for a prospective student weekend, give me a shout.
