I basically applied to the top schools in my field and subfield that were also a good fit for me, with really no so called safety schools. I applied to 10 schools. Go big or go home; that was my strategy, and it paid off. With the state of academia, if that's the route you want to take, ranking and prestige matter. Good luck!

Not necessary. I did not submit mine even though I did mention my service in my SOP. You'll only need it later on if you want to get GI Bill benefits, assuming you have benefits left. Good luck!

Basically, my interest in is food history.

My house is officially going on the market on Friday! I hope it sells quickly. I gave notice at my job (May 29th) and my husband may have to go to NYC next week for a final face to face interview

Question for those who are already attending

All valid points. That said, I can't ignore my kid, I can't disengage myself from my family and spend all my time doing school work, or any other kind of work. That does not mean I am not dedicated to my discipline or that I need to question my motivation. As for life after the PhD, I understand how it works. I understand there is no set schedule, no 9 to 5, but I will come to that when I come that. I also have a lot to say about the American work culture, but that's an issue for another day. -
The cherry on top is that I just got into a week-long seminar at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard taking place the first week of June. I've been trying to get into that seminar for four years and it hadn't worked out for one reason or another. It's an amazing tool for my research and basically, I need to do it. I was all excited until I started looking up accommodation in Cambridge/Boston. Unless I win the lottery or a miracle happens, I don't think I can swing it. I can't find a single hotel within walking distance to the institute or easy subway access for less than $325 a night. Plus flight, plus food, plus the seminar fee. The thought of paying that much makes me sick to my stomach. What's a girl to do???

Question for those who are already attending

Thanks for all the responses! Very interesting schedules. My goal is to keep a work schedule that resembles that of a traditional job. I want to do this for a couple of reasons, 1) I need structure or I fall off the bandwagon very quickly, and 2) since I have a husband and a kid, I NEED my evenings to be free of school work as much as possible, which means I must do everything else during the day. My original idea was to have classes in the morning so that I could be home with the kid once school for him ends for the day but that is not going to work out. My classes will be in the afternoon, which means we still have to have him in after school programs. This works out in that I'll have the mornings to do reading, writing, etc. I am also hellbent on making time for the things that make me happy and are not work, like hobbies. I hope this isn't all a pipe dream! -
We had a yard sale on Sunday to get some of the excess stuff under the control. We are donating a lot of things this week and then we'll hopefully list our house. The selling of the house is what's stressing me out! My husband had a very promising job interview today for a position in NYC, so fingers crossed!

Are you a MacCracken fellow? If so, you may be able to get MacCracken housing for your first year. I am going to NYU too.

Ha! I just got rejected off the waiting list at Michigan.

What does your typical day look like? How do you manage your time? Bonus if you have a family, but not necessary.

Seems to happen often. Tulane History, PhD (S15) Accepted via E-mail on 11 Apr 2015 A 14 Apr 2015 Waitlisted in late February and rejected in early March, but informed that the rejection was a mistake in early April and that I was indeed offered admission. Had to decline as I had already accepted another offer elsewhere, but for anyone on the waitlist hopefully this is good news.

Interesting.

I will be 34 by the time I start the PhD this Fall. Judging by the recruitment weekend, I'll be either the second oldest or the oldest in my cohort, it depends on whether the other person chooses to attend. I'm OK with that. I was always one of the oldest students in my undergrad classes since I took a bit of a detour on my way to college. I also have a family so there's that too. I'm OK with my situation, I don't necessarily think it will hurt my chances of success, I just have to work around a few more hurdles.

Does anyone know where McCurry is going?

I have a large typographic tattoo on one of my forearms and I work in higher ed right now. It has never been a problem. More than anything, how you project yourself is what matters most, IMO. When it comes to the students. remember that this generation has far fewer negative feelings towards tattoos than we do, or perhaps our parents did (I am a bit older than most grad students, I'd say). I expect it to be a nonissue. Just for kicks, and because I've never had the guts to do it while working a traditional job, I want to dye my hair ice blue when I finally quit and move up for grad school.
