  1. I was always told to "dress for the job you want, not the job you have". In the case of grad school, I would treat it just like a job interview. They are essentially hiring you (and paying you a stipend in most cases), to do research for the school and earn the school prestige. I was reading on the web-pages on a few of the schools I applied to that they want to see a mature individual who is focused on their goals. I believe going with a suit-like appearance is very important. Dressing too casually may give off the impression that you are not yet mature enough to make serious decisions about your life. I know they are looking for "fit" in a program, but that comes from your personality and research interests, not from what you are wearing. I know if I get an interview I will probably be wearing a pant or skirt "suit" with nice flats depending on the weather.
  2. I just emailed the IGBP at the Ohio State University and they said they are still reviewing and sending out invitations. There is still hope!
  3. I have also been marking SPAM because I just want to know where people are hearing from. I don't care for "personal" messages like that unless its on forums like these.
  4. I applied to the IGBP. According to the website my application is still in review, but I am starting to think it may not work out since I know people have heard from them. Same with Case Western. I'm a little sad about OSU since I did an internship there and one of my recommendations was from a PI there, granted he is in the Plant Pathology department.
  5. fisherm1: I applied to the biological sciences program there. I am really hoping for an interview. It would be nice to stay in philly.
  6. Got an email from Drexel about financing a phd there. I have a feeling it is a generic email sent to anyone who applied there but it felt nice to get an email from SOMEWHERE. Anyone apply to/hear back from Thomas Jefferson?
  7. As the days pass by, I am becoming more and more worried I may have to try again a third time next year. I really don't want to have to go through all this AGAIN. The waiting is bad enough knowing its my second go-round.
  8. This too is round 2 for me. I was kind of stupid the first time I tried to get my PhD. My undergraduate GPA and the GRE I took for that round wasn't very good. That was 2 years ago and am going to be graduating this year with a MS in Micro. I have re-taken the GRE and am hoping for better news, however it is starting to look the same again. (Rejected from one school already-see below). Still keeping a positive attitude though since some of my schools just closed their applications yesterday. Good Luck everyone!
  9. I used to work in an admissions office for my undergrad institution and I can imagine it being a similar situation. They have a range of the number of students they actually want to arrive on campus so they definitely over accept students. I asked about this once and they said that they go on history and they do have an equation that helps them calculate how many students they need to accept. It does have to do with the number of students currently enrolled, the number of students graduating, and the optimal number of students the college can handle in the freshman class + transfers. I imagine this being similar in grad schools on a much smaller scale.
  10. thanks for the update virion. I wasnt sure if CAMB was cell and molecular biology or something else..but that does make sense. I did mention professors I whose work I found interesting in my SOP who were in the cell bio and physiology departments so I am hoping they know where I want to go.
  11. Hey! I was just wondering how many people on here applied to the University of Pennsylvania Cell and Molecular Biology group. Specifically the sub group of cell biology and physiology. I am interested to see if they sent out invites yet.
  12. Just heard back from U of Rochester. Unfortunately it was a rejection letter :-( Well there are 5 hopes left!
  13. I have been emailing my programs of interest and all I have gotten back is silence. The websites and application confirmation emails all said we gladly will answer any questions and check on the status of your application. Lies.
  14. Got an email from Drexel..."thanking me for my interest and we will be in touch with you shortly." I definitely just went through the entire span of emotions in the 1second it took to open the email.
  15. now on top of constantly checking my inbox, I also check my spam folder like an OCD patient. I think I need help...
  16. That is nothing short of amazing! It sums up this entire experience perfectly.
  17. BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!
  18. I did have a legitimate panic attack the other day as I checked my email for what could possibly have been the 1000th time. I have also been experiencing intense nausea that I can contribute to the waiting process and receiving emails from my chosen schools containing adverts.
  19. @oopsididitagain first off...your name is hilarious. secondly. they do take forever! I wish our lab had one of those SNAP id things from milipore http://www.millipore.com/immunodetection/id3/snap_id . speeds up blotting!
  20. Haha I know what you mean. But I am western blotting right now so...I have time to kill anyway!
  21. Haha I did the same thing when I got an email from Case Western the other day. Unfortunately it was an invite to apply...which I'm assuming is a mistake because they have already confirmed my application is complete. But I did go through that YAY...OH NO!! double feeling at the same time.
  22. Why are the undergrad GPA scores so low? (couldnt be that I was originally a biochem major and realized I love microbes and molecular) Why am I wasting my time? She is getting a masters, what more does she want? Its not like she really NEEDS a phd anyway.... (I WANT ONE BADLY! I need one if I want to do research then be a professor!)
  23. There probably is an advantage to going to the earlier weekend. The professors/people you interview with have had less people to meet with before you and therefore do not have as many people to compare you to yet.
  24. @starstuff I know what you are going through right now because I was in the same boat 2 years ago. I had average GRE scores, a 3.3 GPA (3.0 in my major) and really no lab experience. Although your stats are much better than mine were (except the GPA), I know these PHD programs are insanely competitive. I ended up deciding to bite the bullet and take out loans to get through a 2 year master's program at what I believe to be a decent institution (Thomas Jefferson). I now have 3.71 GPA and have significantly increased my GRE scores and have lab experience (though no papers yet but my thesis is promising). Doing a Master's also gave me more time to grow as a scientist and narrow in on what I want to study. Basically what I am trying to say is getting a Master's, I believe, is worth the extra debt. It will pay off in the future. And if you can get paid while in school, even better! (although I dont get tuition remission, I do have a job in a lab where I am able to make money to put towards my student loans even though they were deferred. another bonus to biding your time in a master's program)
