  1. The ETS practice test was quite accurate for me and I wrote the test 2 times. The Kaplan scores were all over the place for me and didn't really correlate with my real scores.
  2. Thanks edm88, did you hear from your area's department or from your school's graduate department?
  3. No news for BC today.... c'mon Wednesday!!
  4. Looks like no one who was forwarded by their University has been rejected so far. That's good news!
  5. Me too! But I was going through last year's thread and it seemed that people in Toronto got their letters on May 9th and some people in BC got theirs on the 10th, so there's hope for tomorrow!
  6. Some schools won't take away your departmental funding but will just push it back to your second year. So you could use your SSHRC for the first year and your University fellowship for your 2nd year. That's how it is at the 2 schools I was accepted to anyway. So you should check that out.
  7. I understand, and as I read back my comment now, I realize I sounded kind of bitchy, so sorry guys, the stress of waiting is getting to me. But Cleopatra01, I really was surprised that you were under the impression you would receive funding for 2 years, so maybe that's where my reaction stemmed from. (Wouldn't it be great if it really was like that though?)
  8. You guys don't read the instructions when you are applying for a major award that determines your financial future? :| You can't receive the JA Bombardier for both years of your Master's degree, its duration is only one year. It's written on their website.
  9. Has anyone who was forwarded by their University NOT been successful?
  10. Hahaha, finally Kanye speaks the truth.
  11. Thanks for the update. That is RIDICULOUS! This means we won't know the results until JUNE!!!!
  12. The best part is, SSHRC will probably give us zero explanation for why the results have been so delayed. So basically we have to just put our lives on hold and be okay with it.
  13. Honestly it has less to do with what school you go to than who you work with. There are numerous researchers who are the top in their field in North America (and the world) who work at Canadian Universities. If you work with one of these people, I'd say you're doing quite well for yourself (i.e., you can get a job in the US) Also I should mention that for a lot of Canadian graduates, their worry is getting a job in Canada, not the US. There are far more opportuniteis in the US and a lot of Canadian grads have no trouble snagging them. But most of them prefer to stay in Canada, but there are less jobs here because we have less Universities. So really, I'd say you're safe going to school here as long as your program/supervisor is good in his/her area.
  14. Vancouver and the greater Vancouver area have terrible bike lanes compared to other major cities. It's probably possible if you're an experienced biker.. but it will also probably take a while depending on where you are coming from (I'd say at least 30 mins for even the closest parts of Burnaby and Richmon, and that's being lenient). To be honest, you don't even need to stay in New West or Surrey. You could stay in Burnaby and still skytrain to Surrey Central Station (Where SFU Surrey is located) in about 30 mins. I would recommend that because New West and Surrey are not the 'safest' areas to stay and are also not the most 'fun' area.... things in Surrey are very spread out and it's hard to get around without a car. Public transit sucks and if you're taking a bus be prepared to be pressed up against a lot of terrible smelling and sketchy looking people for the entire ride.
  15. It depends on a myriad of factors: the school, the year you apply, who you want to work with, your experiences, etc. etc. Sorry there is no easy answer. But you'd have better luck looking into stats for particular schools on their websites. I think your GPA and GRE are good enough to apply, but I can't really give much more info. than that.
  16. Quick question: If we applied through a school, will the graduate department notify us if we receive a SSHRC? (So that we don't have to wait to get the official letter?) I ask because I was looking through last year's thread and it seems that quite a few people were notified through email from their school.
  17. This is so frustrating, I'm supposed to be looking for a place to live right now but I can't because I don't know what my income is going to be yet for next year. Thanks a lot, SSHRC.
  18. Okay I just realized that this doesn't necessarily mean that they've been mailed yet, but I've been so antsy that I assumed that it's what it means... Please be what it means??
  19. FINALLY!!!! This was posted on the SSHRC Twitter page today in response to a question about the Masters scholarship: "Results coming via Canada Post. Good luck!" HURRY UP CANADA POST.
  20. So they've known all this time but are just not telling us? That makes me even more angry.
  21. For APA it would be the first one.
  22. You don't have to be a highschool student to be a prospective undergrad....
