  1. I'm applying for historical linguistics, but Balto-Slavic languages are in my area of expertise.
  2. I'm checking out the results board and I've memorized the deadlines for various fields of my dreams schools, so I can freak out when I see sth like philosophy or history, which were grouped with linguistics. I hate myself.
  3. I've submitted my Yale application on December 31st, and it was confirmed on January 4. Sometimes it takes a person to click here and there, and sometimes there's a faulty application system and people going nuts (someone told me Cornell had similar issues and I was freaking out). Stay cool.
  4. I called my professor the day before deadlines just to see if everything's OK, otherwise she might have called the ambulance - I was on the edge of a nervous breakdown. I know the feeling. Try to send a message and if they don't reply, you still have a bit of time to maybe look up another recommender.
  5. If it weren't for linguistics, I'd probably go for physics again. Or philosophy. Maybe geology and computer science. I tend to change my hobbies now and then. For a couple of months I'm into geology, then I'm into American history, then I'm totally into biochemistry etc. I cannot really settle, there's so much to learn. I cannot imagine myself doing the same thing for the rest of my life, so these hobbies are my sanctuary. Volatility - that's me.
  6. I cannot take it anymore. And I expect my results in early February. I'm diagnosing myself with personality disorders on Wikipedia. Yup, that's my mental state at the moment.
  7. Cornell still hasn't confirmed my application as complete 3 weeks after I sent them my GRE & TOEFL scores.
  8. I think I'll just write sth like "is moving to Cambridge, MA" (of course, if I get accepted, and it's probably in my wildest dreams) or just add XY to my education info.
  9. Harvard's was so biiiig (that's what she said?) and thorough. Yale's was simple enough. I hated MIT/Cornell's because of the lack of uploading space (I like the Harvard way of putting extra pages for extra material). I also don't like Harvard/Stanford/MIT for not being able to check your app status online. Thumbs up to Yale!
  10. Once upon a midnight query, while I posted weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of grad citations, While my face was white and pale, suddenly I got some mail As if I found the Holy Grail, the bale of applications `'Tis some undergrad,' POI muttered, `with her purpose and her tale - Only interview, CV is stale ' Ah, distinctly I remember - it was in the bleak December: I started my applications, parallel with medications My GRE scores came to town, my face was nothing but a frown From my books I studied more, more for PhD damnation! For the rare and radiant POI - I'm ready for our confrontation! I'll wait here, in frustration... In the process of media meshing, I'm refreshing, I'm refreshing! My inbox and POI's page, just below my address bar, And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming, And the lamp-light o'er him streaming tells me I won't be a star. And he is saying it out loud - why did she try to get this far? No admittance! That's bizarre...

  12. Spending my New Year's Eve finishing applications for Harvard, MIT and Yale. What a celebration.
  13. :D I have that "OH NOT YOU AAAARGH I DON'T CARE" moment every time I receive an e-mail, even if it's an important one. Just give me the admission ones, so I don't freak out.
  14. Also, I have to say I have a strong respect for all those people who decided to go to college in their 50s or similar. It's a praiseworthy decision and I wish you the best of luck.
  15. Amateurs! I'm reading EVERY VIAGRA MAIL ever. You never know!
  16. BA in Linguistics, MA in Comparative Indo-European linguistics (and Cognitive Linguistics as my double major). MA in Slavic languages as well. I'm mostly into PIE linguistics, with emphasis on Balto-Slavic langugages, however my second love is Egyptology and Afro-Asiatic studies. Applying for historical linguistics!
