I thought you people were historians! Guess I need to hit the gym a little bit more to get my delts and traps back to snuff ... now that I know a historian is expected to be an all-round beef cake
-

man this is taking on levels of paranoia that would be disturbingly funny if people's futures weren't on the line
-

Yes, he is an art historian and has done some very good work on the BBC in the past. I really want to watch the episode on the Asante for personal and selfish reasons. I wish the BBC wasn't so stingy with their documentaries broadcasting on the internet liberally.

Close that tab, pop some dramamine (if you're the motion sickness type) and enjoy the weekend ... or at least in exactly 79 mins

I know we are focused in on the written word for this thread but I have picked up a very fascinating series done by the Beeb called the Lost Kingdoms of Africa, which has done a remarkable job. The first season is currently available on youtube and I can't wait to watch season 2 when it becomes available. Anyways, if you get the chance you might want to check it out, here is a link for one of the episodes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp6P_hBnF1s

Don't worry, unless there is an 11th hour miracle, all signs indicate I shall return next year but I'll miss you guys who will go on to glory too. Y'all should come back and check in on the 2013 applicant batch and drop some pearls of wisdom

Well it's almost the weekend so if the schools want to be cruel I hope they do it w/in the next 2 hours cos happy hour starts @ 4:30 and I have some drunks to chaperone.

And if they aren't I would say ask New England Nat. Now granted she lives in Princeton but that is less than an hour and a half away via the train to NYC, so I'm sure s/he knows something about the area.

Dearest applicant: thank you for your generous donation to our "how many suckers can we get to fund the next kegger?" endowment. Sadly, since you were no where near our rigorous academic standards and nor did you know anyone worthy enough to make us think you could help elevate our program in shape, we must reject your application at this time. However, we do look forward to receiving your contributions again next year. Best of luck in whatever menial labor job you end up in. Dean I. Hate You, PhD

Whilst that may help explain the decrease in admittance at public programs, it still doesn't explain why the private schools are also cutting back or maybe I'm missing something here.

congrats!

where are these numbers coming from if I may ask?
-
the consensus before seem to be that since the recession had receded somewhat, there was the likelihood that a few more seats would open up. Is it possible that the decline in class size isn't entirely because of the recession?
-
don't be bashful ... I would recommend you ask if they can recommend another PhD student you can talk to ... in regards to cost of living etc ... that way you aren't getting it from a professor's take ... but that's just me ... SL what's your take?
-
I'll sell you mine ... oh wait ...
-
sorry if I lost the narrative a bit but can you remind us again what school this is?
-
BTW I meant to add congrats to Crater and all with good news today

next round's on me kid
-
well since we're getting to the middle of the acceptance season ... how have the numbers shaken out as far as expected class sizes in general, thus far?
-
Amen sister ... now time to go back to the mailbox and perch myself out w/my sleeping bag, tent, and food ... to wait out the post man for tomorrow!

no one should be subjected to the state of Ohio ... it's akin to going on vacation and ending up in a restroom the entire time
