Your Time to Shine
effess replied to dimanche0829's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Penultimate year of my BA, when I got an essay back with a ridiculously high mark. I thought at first that it said 60 (a 2:1, which is a respectable grade in England) and then realized it said 80, which was the highest grade I'd ever seen (a very high 1st). I've escaped imposter syndrome since then, but I fully expect it to come back the second I start my PhD! -
The 5th and 6th of April is the visit 'weekend'

Stanford has a Center for the Study of the Novel, founded by Franco Moretti -
Rejected from 9 accepted to 1: Am I a Fraud?
effess replied to anon2001's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I was also flat-out rejected from the majority of the schools I applied to (6/8), but the one that I did get into (besides my current MA school) was my absolute reach, wasn't-even-going-to-apply-there school. Thank god there was an interview, or I'd be feeling like a complete fraud. I think we just have to accept that this whole process has been at least 75% nonsensical. -
Post-Acceptance Stress & Misc. Banter
effess replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Me! I'm also 100% sure I'm rejected, and also 100% sure I wouldn't choose the last school over the ones that have accepted me, but I still want a firm conclusion! -
Permanent, I'm afraid. Announced here at UGA on 2/29.

We only add Rs when there are two vowels, to differentiate between them! So I would say "Anna Karenina", but I would also say "Anna Kareniner and War and Peace". That's the deal. -
UCSB (No word yet?)

Added to my pile of rejections! -
Eh, sorry to dampen hopes but I wouldn't read too much into the date - I've looked at the results board in the evening before and seen notifications already for the next day. So, obviously, Grad Cafe can tell the future.

Student Visas and Criminal Records

Sounds like you should get in contact with the university and their office of international education asap and explain your situation. They should be able to help you, or at least tell you right away if they anticipate a major problem. I bet it's something that's come up before for them. -
Well then, here's hoping someone chooses a different offer and opens it up for you (it's not gonna be me, though!)

Ophelia, I got my call maybe half an hour ago, from one of the professors who interviewed me- don't give up hope yet!

0% Confidence of Acceptance
effess replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Stanford interviews go through the 22nd so final answers probably won't be forthcoming until then (again judging by last year's results) -
Anyone want to claim that NYU?

...me too! -
Thanks, lolopixie - I hope you get your good news soon.

I just heard unofficially about an acceptance, but that's because I'm a current MA at the school in question. So happy to definitely be going into a PhD program this fall! (Not comp lit, but my interests are very similar to some of yours - interdisciplinary approach to Modernism)

Just freaked out at the WashU posting on the results thread - "Other" postings are now my least favorite thing! -

A good-and-dirty gin martini. I've never understood vodka martinis. -
I've read most of the big bad books (Ulysses, Anna Karenina, Moby-Dick, etc. Actually, those are three of my favourites) but there are always going to be so many more out there... A few years ago I had one of those shake-the-world-under-my-feet realizations that I will, eventually, die, and there will still be SO MANY BOOKS I won't have read. Can we do recommendations, too? Anyone who hasn't read Stella Gibbons's Cold Comfort Farm should. Immediately.

How are you coping with waiting?
effess replied to bdon19's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Nope, more an advice dream telling you to supplement your grad-school income with some locksmithery! -

Annoying writing habits...
effess replied to todamascus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I hate "utilize" when it just uselessly replaces "use". Ugly. I absolutely love regional variations in speech though, especially the Southern construction "might should". And I love that "y'all" exists, it makes so much sense. I only wish it didn't sound ridiculous in my accent. -
Separate status update websites?
effess replied to wintergirl's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Hi, I'm new. CU-Boulder just sent me a very friendly message to say that my app is complete, and that: "The committees will 'hopefully' be meeting the 2nd to 3rd week in February and notification from them should be to you by no later than March 15th." If anyone's applied and hasn't received that message, you might want to contact them.
