stereopticons got a reaction from DBear in Venting Thread- Vent about anything.
I have similar problems with teaching. I can connect with a handful of students who really like me but the rest are unimpressed. I'm very awkward and have a hard time dealing with disrespectful behaviors. One of my first students also went to the Dean of Students about me. I cried in my office that day (and several other times). So I feel you. Teaching is incredibly hard. You aren't alone!

Exactly! I know I'm condition to assume everything is a lie but its a lot more disappointing when there is a tangible reminder of our fragile existence

I brought pizzas home for dinner on 12/23, my car still smells like garlic 10 days later.
Garlic is probably better than sour milk or febreeze, but I would have figured that the aroma would have dissipated after a week and a half.

stereopticons got a reaction from Psychoplasmics in Fall 2017 Clinical Psychology Applicants
Like @byn I don't think it's going to make or break your application, but emailing POIs prior to applying can be helpful. First, you can make sure they are even taking students. If they aren't, then there's no need to waste time and money in applying to that program. Some schools post this info on their websites, but a lot don't, and it's good to check with the the POI because they may be waiting on grant funding, etc. Second, if you've contacted the POI and had a positive interaction or they were impressed by your CV, they may keep an eye out for your application.
I contacted all the POIs I was applying to work with. All eventually got back to me. Some sent a form email, but some were more personal and started a dialog with them, which I'm hoping will help.

Thanks for the input everyone! I think these are really important discussions to have. I primarily picked the skirt because I feel like it would help with the cold, blizzard-like weather, but I'll keep you all posted on if anything comes up with regards to the skirt.
If one thing is true, it's that I am not about to let some crusty, judgmental guys keep me from looking my best on such an important day! ?? ??

I did. I just sent an email that basically said thanks for letting me know. As @MarineBluePsy said, you don't know what will happen and you don't want to burn bridges.

Usually email or phone call. I've never heard of interviews being posted online without someone contacting you first.

stereopticons reacted to MarineBluePsy in Q's to ask grad students in interviews
Things I asked included:
1) Are you able to live comfortably on the stipend that is provided or are you forced to seek out other sources of income or make sacrifices you would prefer not to make in order to have the basics (food, shelter, clothing, medical care, transportation)?
2) What is the POIs communication style? Hands on or hands off? Constructive criticism? Only points out mistakes, never successes?
3) What is a typical week like for you in terms of how much time is in class, in lab, doing clinical hours, doing homework, etc?
4) Are students supported if they wish to collaborate with other labs or different departments?
5) If students are interested in gaining clinical experience with a population that is not included in the current practicum choices, is the department open to creating an opportunity?
6) What are you expected to do during summers and are you provided a stipend and medical care for that time?

Definitely agree. To me, being aware of the issues is important and recognizing that some things are not as simple for others as they are for me is necessary for the change we both want. I don't mean my post as a critique of yours, just sharing an experience where I learned something.
I want to contribute to a different academic environment where everyone is free from double standards in clothing. I try to do this by confronting these issues where I hear colleagues say things like someone is "trying too hard" (I ask them what they mean and try to have a conversation to see why they are saying what they're saying). If asked, I always support a person's decision to dress up (or to play it more conservatively). I feel like since it's not my career on the line, I don't want to put someone in a position where they feel like they need to be pushing the envelope!
