And don't worry because of my SSN experience, it only took me so long because I am an American Citizen. I know somebody who went to the US as a research assistant (Chinese German). She walked into a Social Security Administration office, brought her passport, visa, etc. filled out the application form, waited in line and was issued her SSN right away (the official document was sent by mail but it only took 2 weeks).

I'll get one of those pretty parasols ladies used to have to keep their ivory skin @ Trained Eye: Thank you for your insights... That's what I thought, too: I will be in a competitive PhD-program and have a TA/AI-position, I don't think I'll have that much time to spend outside hiking, biking, playing, partying anyways...

Congrats mrpbn7! My decision process got way more complicated with being waitlisted at USC... It was one of my top choices from the beginning because I have great research fit and I like that they specialize in very different areas because as mentioned before I would like to keep some flexibility regarding research focus (not that I want to change it but I'd like to keep working interdisciplinary and with mixed methods). Now I am back in waiting and hoping mode :/

Thanks Sigaba, you are totally right. I live in Berlin and therefore I am not used to hot climate. Both of my parents did graduate studies at UT and both of them warned me that the heat will really get to me (if I'll be going). I totally believe them... It's not going to be easy for me but if the climate is the only thing (I don't have any allergies and I hate spiders but don't care that much about all kinds of bugs) I dislike, then I will need to make the choice to be okay with it. My mom made a really good point. She remembers going out to buy milk on her second morning in Austin, it was mid August and already freaking hot at 7 am and she would start to sweat immediately. She said she almost had a panic attack thinking: Oh my god, it's going to be like that for years now... After spending some time trying to catch her breath and stop her heart from exploding in her chest she got up and decided to be okay with sweating. I guess it's that choice you need to make for yourself. Are busses and shuttles air conditioned? I know I won't be able to bike to campus in summer because I'd just get a heart attack from the heat but I'm used to public transportation. It usually takes me 45 minutes to an hour to get to school by subway and train every morning (and I live in central Berlin...)

Me too. Not even an e-mail but whatever, I guess I wasn't the best fit anyways and Chicago is freezing

Hi Boji, I haven't made my final decision yet but I might also be going to Austin in fall 2012 and like you, I would like to live close to campus, downtown etc. because I would like to get around by bike and public transportation. After checking out some craigslist offers I am not sure whether you will get a room within walking distance from campus for $ 350. I think you can find one close enough to downtown to commute easily by bike or public transportation though. I am calculating with $ 500 + utilities right now. But it's a trade-off decision since you will most likely need to pay for a car if you live somewhere cheaper (I know there are shuttle routes etc. but it's way more comfortable with a car then). The money you're investing in a more expensive downtown apartment will then spare you the car. I will also be in the college of communication (but for comm studies)

@ brancan: I couldn't make the decision without knowing unless the school you're still waiting to hear from is not one of your top choices anyways. Otherwise I'd wait (although it sucks) but I know that as soon as I'd go through a rough patch at my chosen school I'd start asking myself: What would've been? My mom always says: 'If only' and 'would have' are dead and long gone but I do regret some decisions I've made and I don't want to regret this one

Hi! I am also considering UT's College of Communication but the comm studies department. Just like you guys, I was confused by how funding works... However, I am dept free (coming from a country with free universities) and therefore wouldn't mind that much but first I want to visit I'll be visiting pretty late (week of April 2nd - combining it with a "vacation" in the sun, Germany is still very cold...). Anybody else already decided to go to UT Austin or considering going? If I'm going I will definitely be looking for a roommate (I'm used to living close to downton and public transportation without a car and I would like to keep it that way...)

It's not over until it's really over... I didn't apply to Rutgers. 27 does seem like a lot but who knows how many people will accept their offer. Do you know how many people went to the event at all? I just saw your Albany result on the results survey and had to grin because you chose "other", too. That's definitely a missing option on that survey: "American with international degree"

Thanks for the advice! I'm from Germany, Germans play everything safe. We usually deposit at least 3 months of rent and pay about 3 months for the realtor so I'll get quite a lot out of the deposit for my current apartment but I didn't think of the missing credit history and additional costs for that.

Hey Edost, your status implies you've already moved? It's funny because I am in a pretty similar situation. I have dual citizenship (American / German). I won't be able to move until early August because I still have a master's thesis to write. I did not have a SSN and it was a big problem because it took forever until I got it (they mail your application to their office in your place of birth so that they can confirm your identity). That took months... For every US-citizen who grew up abroad and did not get a social security number as a child: Apply for one REALLY early. It will take them much longer to process than for internationals. I've been doing lots of thinking about what to bring and what to leave behind. Since I have the prettiest vintage style bike, I really don't want to leave it behind. So that's 1 spacious item on the "bring-list". I am deciding between two schools, one of them is UT Austin. At least then I would not need to bring all of my Berlin winter clothing Apart form my bike and maybe a sleeping bag, I don't know whether it makes sense to bring other stuff. Of course I am leaving behind a whole life. But that's exactly what I chose to do by applying to US programs. I try to see it as an adventure (an adventure for both of us of course, me and my bike). What are other internationals bringing (except for clothes)? I don't really see the point in bringing books, too. I'll get the e-book..

@ mediaphile: I did not really care about the fee because I'd really like to go there but still it's a bit weird how they can't simply send emails (seen from an ecological perspective, sending a one page letter via airmail is definitely not ok...) As I get from the conversation in the weighing decisions thread Madison did make some offers. Northwestern seemed to have made one unofficial offer via phone for TSB. I applied to MTS and still haven't heard from them. Since someone said they would be making Skype interviews with international applicants I don't feel to confident but it's not over until it says rejected !

I have never been to Philadelphia / Madison or done any of these prospective school visits (-> Germany) but when I go visit my schools I will either take a campus tour or walk around to get a feel for the atmosphere, maybe talk to some people on the way (I am usually pretty communicative and simply start talking to people). The most important part for me will be how I feel at my department - you know, whether I simply feel welcome and cared for because I think nothing is worse than having to work like 50 (60?) hours a week in a place where you don't feel like you belong. It's hard to describe what I'm exactly looking for as we all know that complex constructs like trust, authenticity and so on are pretty hard to grasp... I also want to meet with other grad students to get an impression of their perspective. Research fit with professors is also very important for me but I have to say that I'd rather not have the perfect fit with one professor but a good fit with faculty for several interests. My interests changed a lot from undergraduate to graduate and I come from a very interdisciplinary program so I want to stay in a flexible environment. In short: I want to feel like I belong because I know my work attitude and overall mood depend on my well being and this depends on whether I feel home

Wow, I am definitely not a big fan of USC Annenberg's admission decision notification policy... Most of the other schools manage to notify admitted students, wait listed students and rejected students as soon as possible. Seems like USC likes to keep all of its options open and not mail (!!!) admission decisions until mid March. This could mean they won't notify me of my rejection until April because it sometimes takes snail-mail up to two weeks. I mean it's 2012, postal service, srsly? Sorry... I would have loved to go to USC. I think Annenberg is a great school and they have many professors I would have been thrilled working with but they don't treat their applicants as fair as they could...

Wow, you guys are awesome! I come from a fully educated family of PhDs and masters and I get everyone's full support in this. It would have been really tough without my parents helping me but having to deal with their criticism all the time and still getting through applications and grad school itself is clearly unimaginable for me and therefore I totally admire you guys!
-
@ Duva: I think that sounds very reasonable. If you really consider going on to a PhD anyways and you got in now, why take the risk? And it's not only the risk of not getting in... As we all know very well it'll also cost you money, time and lots of nerves again

I totally get what mediaphile (first poster) is talking about... It is a little weird for me because I hold dual citizenship and been to the US several times (junior high school year and many other visits) but I never really moved there. After living in Germany for almost my whole life now I want to know what the other side of the atlantic feels like and I am very excited about going "home" again but it's also weird leaving "home". Especially since I moved to my current city 5 years ago and it took me quite some time to know my way around and make friends (Berlin is quite a big town now).

NYU SCPS Graphic Communications, MA
Duna replied to elle08's topic in Communication and Public Relation Forum
Oh wow, what an 'old' unanswered topic Since I am new to the whole application progress in the US I don't claim to be an expert but I would think that this information you are specifically asking for (GRE, GPA, acceptance rate, faculty interests) is usually that kind of information the schools will be able to give to you. What they can't always provide you with are honest first hand impressions of students (but it seems no one here is in that program). I'd suggest you write some emails or call or maybe even visit NYU? -
I did contact them because I needed to send additional material anyways (I applied to MTS and haven't heard anything, yet, although me being in Germany might be one of the reasons why I wasn't considered for a funded campus visit in the first place) and their graduate coordinator told me the exact same thing that is already stated on the status page: decisions can be rendered until the end of February or early March. Someone else also asked and got the answer: If you haven't been rejected yet you're still being considered. Another poster, who went for interview weekend, said that internationals are usually interviewed via skype. That's our shared knowledge in short. Let's wait until early March, I hope by then we'll know.
