Well, my season of waiting is officially over (save for a few rejections making their way to me via snail mail). Final record: 2/10.

If my hockey team went on a streak where they were 2-8, I would be absolutely flipping the pool. Trying not to let my sadness over the NO's outweigh my elation over the YESses.....but it's hard! I think it's contrary to my genetic make-up to think positively.

Both my acceptances came VERY early in the season, so I think my feeling of sadness is exacerbated by the fact that my initial joy of being accepted had already been replaced by stress and anxiety by the time my rejections started rolling in.....and the string of 7 big, impersonal no's without that remaining happiness buffer was...painful, to say the least.

I think I need to spend some time re-discovering the wonderful things that attracted me to my acceptances in the first place, rather than dwelling on the wonderful elements of the programs that didn't want me. Perspective readjustment is very, very necessary.

I'm glad it's over. Wish I would have ended up with a few more options, but grateful to come out on the other side alive, and with a shred (a very small shred) of sanity.

I think that may be the single most absurdly privileged sentence I've ever read.

What really squashed my mind grapes was when I was really hurt by being rejected by a program I wouldn't have gone to anyway. Not that I wouldn't have gone if I didn't have other options, just that I got into my number one program before I got the rejection. So why did I care? But I did.

I mostly just want to remind people that it can happen, even for a jamoke like me, and to balance the natural doom and gloom feelings we all get in this process.

No, thank you anyway, Zinc. I read in another thread that it was also someone else's birthday, and s/he received a rejection email today, so it could have been worse.

And also, I've been meaning to relay how much I appreciate your contributions to the forum as someone on the inside.

    I really do, Trip. Thanks

And thanks to everyone for all the support. Not just for me, right now, but for everyone, generally. I really do feel like there's a legit community of people on here who really care about one another. It makes me really excited to get to know everyone professionally

I'm pulling for all of you! Here's to good news for everyone!

i suppose you might take this with a grain of salt, since CUNY's funding package pretty much talked me out of applying to them at all, but give a serious thought to the quality of your work while at either program. if you're teaching a 3/3 load, it's hard to imagine that you'll be writing with the same sustained care and effort as you would if you had the security of assured funding. as well, my impression is that NYU's reputation is a bit better than CUNY's in the "periodic" areas of the discipline, whereas CUNY is stronger in critical theory and theoretical subsets (marxist, queer, eco, etc.)

hi everyone! i've been trolling the boards for awhile and that first nyu call was mine. the english department's grad chair said that successful applicants weren't going to be notified by the graduate board for another couple of weeks, but that since i'm international she wanted to reach out and help me plan my visit down to the school and to get my fiancee's visa application started.
