2018 Applications Thread

@GreenEyedTrombonist yes it is nice to have things done and submitted early, but it definitely also gives you plenty of time to freak out. Haven't checked in here in days because I've been frantically studying for the GRE...which PAID OFF. Honestly today was a bit miraculous. I had been consistently testing at a 164 (94th percentile) in verbal and a 150 (39th percentile) quant. My practices had all been very consistent so I thought I knew how I would do, but I ended up scoring 8 (?!) points higher than I have ever scored on a practice test: 169 (99th percentile) verbal and 153 (51st percentile) quant. WTF?! Now just waiting for my writing scores... -

I have submitted to USF and UMass because they won't send letter-writer requests until you submit everything, and one of my letter-writers is on a tight schedule and needed me to get everything out early. Applying to eleven other programs though and I could just turn them all in a be done with it, but... My writing sample is a drastically reworked version of a chapter from my thesis, and almost immediately upon finishing the rework, it, of course, became clear to me that if I can find the time to work through one more draft I can make it something that I think/hope will be a really stellar piece of scholarship. Hoping I can find the time... -

Eeek! I'm retaking the GRE as well because my scores expired. Very nervous about that; it has been many years since I have even looked at serious mathematics. The number of schools I apply to will probably end up being driven primarily by finances; I'd love to apply to every school I'm interested in, but that probably won't be possible...we'll see. And yes! I also feel a bit wiser this time around. Of course, some days I still feel like its hopeless... -
2018 Applications Thread

Hi all! Applied a few years back to enter in fall 2015. Sent apps to four schools, two rejects (Texas and Pitt), one interview that resulted in rejection (Iowa), and one waitlist that didn't pan out (Colorado). I also sent out an app to Texas State University's mass communication MA program and ended up enrolling there and completing the degree with a digital media concentration. My first MA is from Colorado with a rhetorical focus. I'm working as a lecturer this year and will be sending out apps to begin Fall 2018. Casting a much wider net this time around; ideal programs have a faculty with expertise across rhetoric, media studies and performance studies. Cherry on top if they have journalism expertise as well. Looking at 10-13 schools, but top choices are Utah, Minnesota, and Amherst. -
I am most likely going to be attending CU-Boulder this fall and I recently went on a visit and got terrible reception on my phone! I use AT&T and I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience/if anyone knows who has good coverage in Boulder? Thanks in advance!!

I am currently deciding between offers from two schools and I there is something that I'm not sure how major of a factor it should be in my decision. At the first school, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, I have a TA position. However, at CU-Boulder I have a TA position and a seemingly strong chance to get to do work as an RA during summers. Is getting experience as both a TA AND an RA particularly valuable? Valuable enough to be something that should be a significant factor in my decision making?

I received an e-mail from the communications M.A. program at the University of Cincinnati today saying they are "able to invite three students to travel to Cincinnati to get to know the campus and department" and I was one of them. The e-mail also tells me to let them know if I can go so they can "make flight and other arrangements." They also said they would put me up in an on-campus hotel. I'm not sure exactly how to take this or what it means because I feel like the wording is a little ambiguous in terms of money, like, it kind of sounds like they will pay for this visit but I don't want to get my hopes up! I'm also unsure of how to take this because I haven't heard from the school since I applied and to my knowledge they haven't accepted me yet. Ah! How do I take this?! I mean, I'm assuming it is a good thing, but maybe someone here has more experience and can help me understand exactly what it means?!

safety schools and reaches

Thank you so much! I unfortunately have virtually no resarch experience. My interests are very LGBT oriented. I want to study the communitcation about LGBT people within religious communities and the impact it has on the LGBT movement/community as a whole. I also have an interest in organizational communication, I'd like to work in an activist capacity for LGBT causes or in the non profit sector before going on to get a doctoral degree. I'm also very concerned about getting a teaching assistantship as it will probably be necessary for me to be able to attend. Unfortunately as I said I have no teaching or resarch experience, and I have no clue how important that is or if most applicants for acceptance and assistantships tend to have much experience in those areas. Any insight you can give me would be so appreciated! -

Hey! I'm new here, I wish I had discovered this resource earlier! I applied to M.A. communication programs this year and I was wondering if anyone here more knowledgable than me could help me out! My GRE is a 1260 total, with 590 verbal, a 670 quantitative and a 4.5 on the writing. My GPA is a 3.56, 3.93 in Communication and 3.95 on the last 60 hours. I applied at the following: UT Austin UW Milwaukee UC Boulder UW Seattle UI Chicago UU Salt Lake City University of Mephis University of Cincinnati Portland State I have no real perception of the reputation of quality of many of these schools because rankings have been so hard to come by, but if anyone can shed any light on the quality of these programs and what my statistics might mean etc. I would really appreciate it!
