Arcanelady, smrv, may I ask what are your stats? I'm thinking of applying to Brooklyn College for next Fall 2015

Duquesne University prioritize their students. Duquesne has a 5 year accelerated track so that could be why. I spoke to the advisor and he said if you have at least a 3.5 and you did it in their program, it's a guaranteed acceptance in the 5 year track.

I used HippoPirate's technique as well of grouping them. I also used them in everyday language for practice. It felt weird at first but it was a good starter for conversations it makes it more meaningful and encodes better in long-term memory. Studying for the vocabulary took over my life. I carried flascards everywhere with me...the bus, running on a treadmill, sitting at a bench at the mall. It will be very rewarding once you're done.

I know the school has a well established audiology program but its great to hear they created a new SLP program. Did you get in?

A lot of folks would like to even get a spot in a CA school. It's one of the toughest states to get in. You may never get this opportunity again and you will REGRET it. Go. Go. Go.

Are you able to visit the school?

I would definitely assess your long-term career goals. Do you plan to work in the schools or medical focus? As far as I know, all NY schools give you an opportunity to get the TSSLD certificate and that would make things easier in terms of paperwork. It's more difficult to get educational track jobs without your TSSLD according to an SLP I know who had trouble finding CFY in the tri-state. She graduated 2 years ago, but I'm not sure if things have changed. If money is a problem, I would take the scholarship offer and that means less payback after graduation. Plus, moving away also helps you focus better in your studies.

As for now, it is for everyone entering Fall 2014. More information here under Standar IV-A http://www.asha.org/Certification/2014-Speech-Language-Pathology-Certification-Standards/ However, it is up to the specific program whether they think geology, astronomy or biochemistry can count as chemistry or physics. I wish they had standardized this more, it'll save people lots of questions and money.

I would thoroughly research the programs that are members of the MRA. Verify if they offer at least 375 hours so you can meet the requirements for ASHA certification. The University of Sydney's admissons told me they offer only 180-190 hours. The rest, you'd have to make up as post-graduate employment for 6 months. You'd still have to complete the Praxis and your CFY. You can by-pass the CFY IF you are in good standing under the RCSLT, SPA, IASLT, CASLPA or NZSLT for 1 year and that usually means finding full-time employment.

I am having difficulty reaching out to this school as well. I'm hoping to apply to them for next fall. Do you now if they calculate on the last 60 credits or do they count the overall GPA?

I'm not applying to audiology but I want to share my own experience meeting with an audiologist. I had an acute ear infection that caused severe vertigo and when I saw the audiologist, I went into a sound booth and he tested my hearing and thought it was a neat experience. I didn't know much about AUDs until that experience. I now appreciate my hearing and balance after that. Anyone here interested in balance disorders?

I would personally call the directors of all the programs you are applying to gain a definitive answer which scores they will focus. Some schools weigh both heavily as screening tools. Others, not so much. It's best to speak with a member of the adcoms.

Which school do you attend? It will be very helpful for us who will be applying next year as well.
