  1. THIS. I am so happy for everyone, but so very jealous, ah well. I know I have great offers on the table, but, alas, an implicit 'no' from a dream school is nonetheless heart-wrenching. Out of curiosity, any of you admits African American lit people?
  2. Quite possibly, though I am finding it difficult to schedule all of my campus visits as they're all over the place. And I still have a couple (top choice) schools to hear from before booking flights. WHY CAN'T THEY ALL JUST TELL ME TODAY. That way I will have my reading week to potentially non-stop cry.
  3. YAY! Now I don't have to send that bridge-burning email to Dr. Reid-Pharr. Though it would have been so much fun. You going to go to the open house evening?
  4. Thanks for that, ComeBackZinc, it seems sometimes like no one has anything good to say about New Haven! Those are all very positive aspects.
  5. Aaargh so nervous about this one. Not that excited about the prospect of living in New Haven from what I've read, but still, amazing program, and probably better placement than my current acceptances. Eep.
  6. Yes, especially around the Whyte Ave area. American and minority literatures for the most part.
  7. Eeeggsactly. Well good luck to you for those two! I'm sure you'll be successful, probably at both haha. Oh hardly, I am unwilling to consider all of this anything but a fluke.
  8. Fair enough, my main concern is that (as a young female who is neither burly nor learned in martial arts) I would be forced to live in an unsafe area in order to accommodate the funding. Frustrating indeed, I can imagine. And thanks for that offer! I will most definitely take you up on it if I decide to go that way. At this point I think Vandy is taking the lead for me, but campus visits have to happen before I can make a solid decision. That, and I'm still waiting on my top two programs, or more honestly, my reach programs, before really getting down to the nitty gritty of choosing. Hopefully that notification happens soon, as I am pretty sure I am getting an ulcer. Will do! "Dear Prof. Reid-Pharr. There's this guy I know from this chatroom about grad stuff and he would like my ECF please. Thanks! I really like your work! K Bye!" The End.
  9. From the beginning of this I was convinced I would get in nowhere, so it's an incredibly unexpected roll, that's for sure. As haughty as it sounds, I don't want it to end here! Oh the greed of acceptances... As for Maryland, you never know, this process isn't completely predictable. If I were you (and if you think it's a good fit) I'd hope for Rutgers, they have an amazing funding package, and a pretty great faculty. I was going to apply but decided against it last minute. It would at least be a nice option to weigh against your other acceptances. (Or, there's always the infamous H!).
  10. Those aren't necessarily my top three, just some suggestions. Langano is my absolute favourite, as I love Ethiopian food and how healthy it is, but your suggestions are great too! And yes, this has been an insanely mild winter.
  11. I think you'll get the ECF too, and to answer your earlier question about the email itself, it seemed like it was a mass email in that it was quite basic, but was personally addressed, so there's still a chance. 18k and an invitation to the March 16 meet and greet thing. I don't know how you can do New York with this kind of funding, and I don't know how I would ever manage to finish in a reasonable number of years with the teaching load they expect of you plus extra to make up for the paltry funding. I love the faculty and the location, but this is definitely a tough one. Must put thinking cap on...
  12. Same here on both accounts, just a little while ago. Don't lose hope yet, TripWillis! Cuddle up with your other great options and let them calm you haha. But seriously, congrats on those and not yet having rejections =)
  13. I'm another MA acceptee, but I declined, as I have offers from the States, and in my concentration, that's where I need to be. As for the cost of living, rent is really quite high here if you want to live in a nice and safe neighbourhood, but everything else is a bit cheaper than other big Canadian cities. The area around the University has lots going for it in terms of shops, coffee hangouts, ethnic food (Langano Skies for scrumptious Ethiopian, Remedy Cafe right off campus for Indian/Pakistani & chai, Sugar Bowl for bistro food and hipster student watching, the list goes on and on), and its proximity to Whyte Avenue, and UAlberta's faculty is fantastic. Enjoy! (And enjoy the fact that your funding is cushy despite massive cuts in Arts spending of late, it's a very good thing that the cuts haven't reached the students directly yet, though indirectly it's definitely happening. The faculty no longer have phones!).
  14. For those of you accepted last week, your ECF info will probably come today, as mine just did. Congrats to everyone who receives one!
  15. This. I am hating this waiting game for funding. Doesn't feel like an admit means what it should until funding is in the bag. By the way, we have similar research interests, very cool.
  16. Congrats TripWillis! I got the same email today Strange seeing such a familiar and revered name in an email addressed to little old me!

    Thanks!!
  18. THIS. And by hours, you could mean days, weeks, or months.
  19. I just got an email this morning (most recent Accepted on the results board), so don't lose hope everyone! I don't think they're sending everything out in one day.
