  1. I don't think one phone call would be considered annoying, I think it would be a reasonable follow-up to ensure that they received your email. Emailing and phoning them multiple times on the other hand...that would be a wee bit excessive
  2. Ooooh the OGS dance. Yes. I applied to that one this year too and while my application was due at the end of November I know it won't even be looked at until maybe Feb? Thanks for the congrats and congrats to you as well surefire! I'm looking forward to receiving my official email to banish that tiny seed of doubt that always remains until I have something tangible in my virtual or otherwise mailbox. Thanks for the congrats pbaid. Out of cautiousness I won't reveal what uni I attend though. The world is much too small and I don't want anyone in academia (peers or faculty) being able to trace anything I post on this forum back to me in real life (at least not without them putting in a substantial amount of sleuthing effort or having to ask the NSA lol)
  3. Ahh the waiting. I lucked out and received some insider intel...I imagine I'll receive word through more 'formal' channels in December. Good luck!
  4. Whoot! Just found out that my SSHRC app is being forwarded by my university to Ottawa! Now to wait until Jan(ish? if I remember from last year) to hear from SSHRC that they have received my app and then the long wait until results are released.
  5. I would not place my bets on this as I know several US PhD students (both American and Canadian) who have racked up heinous amounts of debt resulting from the cost of their tuition. I think the important thing to take away is that if you are thinking about going to a US school (the same as a Canadian school), know what your financial limits are and under what circumstances you would realistically be able to go there. For example: would you go to X school regardless of funding? Or would the amount of funding play a substantial role in your ability to go there? You can always apply to as many places as you want (providing you can afford the application fee costs, which can be prohibitive) and then see what rolls in
  6. US schools can provide excellent funding that exceeds the average amount of funds at Canadian school - at the same time they often provide zero funding. It depends on how competitive a candidate they think you are. Canadian schools, particularly at the PhD level, generally have a guaranteed minimum for funding (though they don't always advertise it). So it really depends on your cv, reference letters, grades, and gre score for US schools. Also, remember you can take SSHRC to the states ($20k sshrc, if you get $35k you have to downgrade)
  7. SUBMITTED! After innumerable revisions and having 5 other faculty members review and give input + one last minute look over by the head of the department (she likes it!) my application is officially submitted. Now....the waiting. Apparently my department is meeting next week and their deadline to forward to the school of graduate studies is the 21 or 22? Edit: 2nd time applying for PhD SSHRC - 1st time I applied for it I was waitlisted (received MA SSHRC)
  8. This is my understanding of how the process works, or at least that is how I have been told it works from the three different Canadian universities I have attended
  9. Alrighty, another new thread! So, I am still working on this year's draft as my dept. deadline isn't for another week. Background info: First year PhD, Received MA SSHRC, waitlisted last cycle for PhD SSHRC. Here we go again!
  10. I posted in it to revive it! I think one of the reasons that it didn't catch was because there is no date in the title
  11. The internal deadline for my school is the first week of Nov so I'm still doing revisions and sending my drafts around, ordering transcripts and the like. My application was waitlisted this past round so maybe I'll get one before April, but I am definitely not counting on it and am working to perfect this year's application. Background: first year PhD, received MA SSHRC.
  12. A lot of universities hold information sessions to help you learn how to write your sshrc application. From there, get as many profs to review it as possible!
  13. I start grading once the assignments come in, or a day or two after, with the goal of a 1-2 week turn around time depending on the length of the assignment. The amount I grade at once and for how many hours in a row changes depending on what other stuff I have to work on that might be of a higher priority (or what other stuff I have to work on that I'm avoiding working on )
  14. I've never had a prof request something like that. Is it worth marks? You could always meet with her and ask her what she is looking for and show her an example of how you regularly take notes.
  15. Congratulations and thanks so much for posting the update! Gives the rest of us on the wait list a little hope
  16. The one I posted above costs $650 at a microsoft store, you definitely shouldn't be paying over $700 for it. In terms of going up from there, if you can get to one, Microsoft store people are pretty awesome at showing you what your options are in different weight classes and the like + they aren't on commission. I'm not laptop savvy enough to weight the pros and cons of the higher priced models that are in the 3lb range because my goal was 5lbs and under when looking for a laptop, so I did my research with that in mind. I do know that getting lighter (3lb) with a 14in screen is going to reem your wallet though o.O Might be worth getting a smaller screen to save money? Try looking at the different screen sizes they have in stock in different comp stores and see if you can imagine yourself writing on it. If you are going to buy from a store like Future Shop, I would go to Best Buy instead. They're owned by the same corporation, but Best Buy is almost always less expensive. You can buy online from both as well I believe.
  17. In that price range you're looking at something from HP, which is ok, but by no means great. Your weight specifications also put you in ultrabook territory (anything under 5 lbs), but your screen size specifications, combined with your price limitations, mean that there is no way you are getting a 14in screen for under $700, weighing only 3 lbs. However, the ASUS Vivobook, which is under 5 lbs but more than 3, and has a 14in screen is an AMAZING laptop. You can buy it from a variety of places (I got mine from a microsoft store because they had a 10% student discount). Here's a link to the asus site: http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_VivoBook_S400CA/ One fantastic thing about this laptop is that it has a touch screen! So you really get the most out of Windows 8 (which is amazing...providing you have a touch screen). I also has a built in solid state drive, so it boots up super fast and comes back from hibernation even faster
  18. I haven't started my PhD, so I don't know if this is realistic or will help, but once I have everything organized (and I mean really organized, in detail, solid outline, etc.), I move at a pace of about 10 good pages a week. This is what I did for my undergrad thesis and am doing for my current MA thesis. Breaks from that pace happen when editing sections, incorporating revisions, etc., but when everything else is in order, that's the pace I aim for.
  19. $50 seems like plenty to me. $100 is a lot for a gift card, since its basically giving someone cash...just cash with conditions on it lol. I tend to go for less expensive but more personal things for advisors. Upon finishing my BA and getting a bunch of letters of recommendation and support from three key profs during my undergrad, I made them each a basket of homemade baked goods. I intend to do the same thing this year: once I'm done my MA, convocated, etc., and started my PhD program, I will give my advisor a gift basket of things I've baked along with a nice card thanking her for her guidance, etc.
  20. I'm not in a doctoral program, but a condensed one year MA (PhD starting in Sept) and I'm spending my summer researching and writing my thesis o.O While also doing some RA work.
  21. As a current procrastinator, I am also grateful
  22. 12 hours? Small potatoes. Last summer my two kitties and I drove from the West coast of Canada to Ontario. It took 5 days and neither of the cats had traveled before. Everything was just fine It's important that you have a vehicle with AC so that you can control their temperature. I stopped every 4 hours to see if anyone needed to use the litter box, gave them wet food and cat nip and cat treats and away we went.
  23. Congrats! That's great news
  24. What category are you in? I'm also waitlisted at 16.9, anthropology/social sciences and am trying to get an idea of where the waitlist for my category starts and ends.
