Declining an offer while on a visit
Nerd_For_Life replied to Sconnie's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Decide on the 15 after you've already gone home, gotten reimbursed, etc. -
Often online status updates take a while to happen. I have heard back from both of the programs I've applied to and they both of their websites say that my application is "Under Review"

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship/CGS Doctoral Scholarship 2013
Nerd_For_Life replied to Mike D.'s topic in The Bank
Ugh. the wait. it's tedious. Part of me is resigned to not hearing anything until the end of April/early May (PhD), but another tiny part of me that I continue to squish keeps hoping that I will hear sooner and that it will be amazing news (monies please!) -
Are you waiting on UofT's anthro MA program or PhD? If it's PhD the decisions have already been made (went out mid feb). If it's anthro MA last year decisions came out at the end of March.

It varies a lot based on the school. The schools I have experience with all send their PhD acceptances out before their masters.

Waitlisted - waiting for your school AND everyone else's
Nerd_For_Life replied to RubyBright's topic in Waiting it Out
Found out today that I am not getting into the school that waitlisted me. I was surprised because I wasn't expecting to hear anything, positive or negative, until April. My guess is it wasn't a ranked wait list but supervisor availability based and the supervisor(s) (Need two of them to be able to take me, three ideally for a committee) I needed had their first round students accept. A bummer, but I did get into another PhD program, just waiting on the funding info for that one, so at least I won't be without a home in Sept. -
SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship/CGS Doctoral Scholarship 2013
Nerd_For_Life replied to Mike D.'s topic in The Bank
So is this notification that SSHRC is sending to direct applicants just informing them of whether they have made it to the final round of competition? Not the official "You got funding!" or "Sorry, no funding for you" letters that normally go out in April right? -
You have to submit transcripts and if those show that you were on probation, than yes, they will know. Also, since it's the same school you did your undergrad at, I'd say that increases the odds since they will know exactly how to read your transcript. That said, you have the opportunity to explain why you were on probation and grad school generally looks at your upper level coursework (third and fourth year courses) to judge your competence. Don't hide it, if you do and they find out it could result in you getting booted from the program if they accept you

I'm waiting for funding info to arrive in the mail from York (they said it could take two weeks). Does anyone have any insider info on what anthro PhD funding might look like? They said a "generous financial package" in the acceptance letter but that could mean anything o.O (probs I will just have to wait and see)

Or maybe your husband could support your academic choices? I don't mean that to sound harsh, but it's important to have a spouse who supports what you want and need to be happy and satisfied in life There are lots of ways to make distance work and it's never indefinite. He can come with you or visit or if you get good funding you could make trips back a few times during your fieldwork. Plus, with the wonders of the internet you'll be able to see each other and hear each others voices. Also, finding a job after you graduate might require you to move across the country or to another country, there's definitely no guarantee that you will find work in the location that's most convenient. Maybe together you could come up with some balance and compromise?

Agree with the above post When I'm really stuck on an article I google it. I look up what other people have said about it, how they have broken it down, and try to think about how it is relevant to my own research. Then I go from there. I normally start by coming up with some really simple straight forward question and then I look at those questions and think "Ok, how would I extend that simple question (which might have a one work answer) into some more provoking?" Relating it to other authors you've read, even if they're outside the discipline is great, just make sure that if they are rather obscure you provide a bit of background info on whatever your referring to.

Financial services at the university should be able to provide you with a lot of information about both external and external award and your supervisor should be able to point you in the right direction as well. Check out local, university, national, and global scholarships and go from there Some will be specific to your field and others will be more broad.

How to overcome low ranking - any advice?
Nerd_For_Life replied to Provincial Cosmopolitan's topic in Decisions, Decisions
That's great advice And I agree with it. I'm deciding between two schools, one with a higher rank than the other (but in Canada) and I am leaning towards the lower ranked school because of things like supervision, size of the program, structure of the program, community programs that the school is involved with that are relevant to my research, etc. I feel that the quality of the work that I am going to be able to produce in this environment is going to be so much stronger than what I would be able to produce elsewhere and I'm confident that that will show when it comes time for hunting down postdocs and jobs -
SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship/CGS Doctoral Scholarship 2013
Nerd_For_Life replied to Mike D.'s topic in The Bank
So, happily, I no longer have to worry about the scenario where I am lucky enough to get a SSHRC but unlucky enough to not get accepted into grad school (I previously posted under the screen name NicoleMc). I got into York! Whoot! I'm hoping the delay in notifying direct applicants doesn't mean that the final award notifications are also delayed.... -
Reputation of Canadian schools?
Nerd_For_Life replied to musicStudent245's topic in Decisions, Decisions
It depends on the program and your supervision. Is one a better fit for your research over another? Will you be able to better network at one over the other? Also take into account the size of the university and the department you will be in, those things can have a major impact on the quality of your experience there. -
Congratulations everyone!

I won't find out any funding information until I get it in the mail, so we'll see. I'm more interested in guarenteed amounts of funding than potential amounts because I want an amount I can depend on and compare with UofT's funding package. I'm hoping for tuition and fees covered and then a stipend for living expenses so we'll see

Just received an acceptance email from York University, PhD program in Social Anthropology. Details of "a generous financial package" and official letter should arrive in the mail within two weeks! So stoked! Best possible supervision for me in all of North America XD

UofT anthro MA won't notify until mid to late March. Applications are still being reviewed and no meetings have taken place. UofT PhD decisions have been made. If you have not received an email telling you that you were accepted or waitlisted, chances are your application was rejected. Anyone have word from York PhD Anthro? Someone posted in the results section saying that the meeting was going to be this week o.O But I also know they extended their deadline (potentially related to new funding schematics by the Gov of Canada) -
Any field work that requires an ethics review, done through a university (eg. any work involving interviews with human subjects; non-human animals is a different ethics review), that does not have one is invalid in the eyes of the university. So, if your fieldwork would involve interviews of any sort, it would not be considered valid in the academic community if you do not have not completed an ethics review, and would be a waste of time, aside from anecdotal evidence posited as 'life experience' within a future project completed through a recognized university.

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship/CGS Doctoral Scholarship 2013
Nerd_For_Life replied to Mike D.'s topic in The Bank
There is another thread going on this already. I have the same concern. My plan is, if I get a sshrc but don't get accepted to either of the schools I applied to I will contact those schools to see if they will reconsider, or if I am waitlisted if this might change where I am ranked on the waitlist. Hopefully that won't happen and I get accepted into the school I really want to get into! If you have no school to take up your sshrc at come Sept. you forfeit your sshrc. -
Does "Ivy" status matter in anthropology?

Depends, what are the schools?
