  1. Sorry, I don't know the answer to this but I am really looking forward to reading the responses because I am in a similar situation in a very competitive program. Anyone have experience with being wait listed and any funding offers that followed once you got off the wait list?
  2. If it's your top choice and the offer is that awesome, definitely withdrawal, give someone else a chance at the spot you might get
  3. Still no word from MA socio-cultural anthropology! (or any MA anthro if the results page is any indication). Anyone emailed to ask when results will go out? Edit: I just emailed to ask when I will find out o.O
  4. This timeline depends on the program. For example, UofT's MA in socio-cultural anthropology is a 1 year program, the PhD a five year. So providing you keep your nose to the grind-stone that's 5 years. 5 years is the same amount of time it would take to do a PhD at UofT if you did not already have an MA in anthropology so doing the MA vs direct entry PhD, in terms of time, makes no difference. Check out your program and what the timelines are and what is a realistic timeline for you to accomplish your goals.
  5. How is research fit between the two schools?
  6. The following applies to humanities (and anthro) MA's: From everything that I've read and heard from talking with professors (at my undergrad uni and at prospective grad uni's) doing a solid research based MA is really beneficial. You get to network, work experience if you RA or TA, opportunities to publish your research, and also time to further hone your research interests and build a solid foundation for PhD work.
  7. I agree with the comments about extensions and whatnot. I am curious to see what other posters have to say about backing out of an offer gracefully. I'm waiting to hear back from UofT's anthro MA but I've also been accepted to Cambridge, which didn't give a deadline to accept by, but has emphasized that I let them know asap (though they haven't let me know about funding or who will be supervising my thesis).
  8. Anyone heard from the anthropology department yet for MA's? I'm waiting to hear back on socio-cultural and UofT is the only uni I haven't heard back from yet o.O
  9. I would go for school B. It's important to branch out, network, and gain different perspectives throughout your academic career. In Canada some of the most prestigious scholarships make it a pre-requisite that you attend different schools, that's how important it is to the granting agency that you network, are exposed to different teaching styles, research styles, and point of view, etc.
  10. I did this. I was offered a well and fully funded go (was informed I was their top applicant) at Australian National University's PhD in Gender, Sexuality, and Culture. Thing is, I would have had to started this January (found out in Sept of 2011), would skip doing an MA, and would never know if I was going to be accepted into any of the other programs. It was a hard decision but really came down to knowing that I could always apply there again and in reality, moving to Australia from Canada is not something I can take on right now (I've got pets, my partner who also wants to be able to work and school, etc.). My supervisor at ANU would have been good, but my supervisor in Canada will also be awesome. I'm also turning down Cambridge for similar reasons to turning down ANU (location mainly, but in Canada I will have a much better fit with my supervisor than at Cambridge). I've decided to stay in Canada because it makes the most sense practically and financially and I won't be losing out on my school fit by making the choice. MA at UofT here I come
  11. Heard from SSHRC a couple days ago that they received my application, now I'm just waiting for them to give it the final stamp Passed the info on to UofT and they said informing them was definitely the right thing to do. Now....I wait.
  12. Where you PhD or MA? Who's supervising you? Was it an official or unofficial acceptance? Which branch of anthro (I'm going for socio-cultural) I was in email contact last week letting them know that my SSHRC app had been forwarded to Ottawa for final verification. Thanks for your response! (Now I'm antsy!)
  13. I'm waiting to hear back from UofT's anthropology program (socio-cultural). Anyone know timelines for that one? Cut off date was Jan.20 but all of my info was in Nov. 11, 2011.
  14. A lot of this depends on what networking you are able to do. Getting your foot in the door is the most important thing. McGill is internationally recognized as a phenomenal school and would not be a barrier to you getting a US job. It's the connections and networking that matter at the end of the day, in combination with what you publish.
  15. Anyone heard word from University of Toronto or know when people started hearing back last year?
  16. Did you apply independently or through a university?
  17. I applied for a SSHRC at the MA level and I heard from my undergrad university on Thursday that I have been forwarded to SSHRC for final verification! Any thoughts on when I might hear back? Should I inform UofT (my grad school choice for Canada) that I will likely be getting a SSHRC?
  18. Anyone applying to UofT? Heard anything? I've applied to University of Toronto's Social Anthropology MA program....applied in the beginning of November and have been waiting ever since! I know they only stopped accepting application on Jan 20 but does anyone know of a response timeline for them?
  19. I found out a couple of days ago that my Undergrad university (University of Victoria) has forwarded my MA application for a SSHRC onto SSHRC for final verification (aka. I'm (almost certainly) getting a SSHRC!). The Canadian University I applied to was UofT for their 1 year MA program in socio-cultural anthropology. Does anyone have any insight into that program? It's admission process/timeline? and/or how my application will be affected by getting a SSHRC? Should I tell them I've been forwarded for final verification? I'm antsy!!! (Also, if there is an MA SSHRC 2012 thread going (I can't seem to find one) where I would be better off posting, please let me know!)
