  1. Hang in there everyone. Here's a little something to take you mind off of things for exactly 11 seconds.
  2. I'm sorry to hear about your medical issue but glad to hear that you are receiving a good prognosis and great treatments. While I have not experienced such an issue, I suggest that you contact your school's counseling department. Even though counseling is associated with mental health, they are likely to have resources and offer referrals for other types of services that may benefit you. They may be able to refer you to local and free group counseling offered to students in your position. Also have you checked the American Cancer society web site or Braintumor.org? These sites usually have forums and information on group support near your location. As for the advisor question, I would think that people would be supportive of you given that this is something that is clearly out of your control. Has it impacted your ability to continue your studies/work in any way?
  3. Love this. Unsurprisingly, a lot of jabs come from the clueless folks that are near and dear to us. Cheers to all the laymen out there!
  4. Summer is looking good for me because there is nothing on my agenda. Quit my job in June. Get to live on Oahu for 6 weeks and be a total beach bum while my husband slaves away at his hospital rotation.
  5. Your advisor is obviously curious about how the class is going. Give him your honest answer without trashing Professor Bob. You haven't mentioned whether his knowledge is lacking in other aspects of plant nutrient absorption analysis. Is he competent in other class topics? If Method X's usage in plant imaging analysis is a side topic that is generally unrelated to plant nutrient absorption analysis, then I wouldn't be too hard on the guy. Unless his expertise is in plant imaging analysis, of course. As for how your advisor reacts to Prof. Bob's lack of knowledge in his colleague's work, that is between them. If your advisor chooses to broach the subject with Prof. Bob, then it is between them.
  6. Don't read too much into it. A school I applied to gave me access to a school user id and email account months before I was admitted to the program. Then again, their student email is google-operated, so it doesn't really cost them any resources to maintain it.
  7. Most recently, the Hunger Games series. Relatively recent, the Wild Trees by Richard Preston. He makes non-fiction read like a fiction.
  8. Congrats! Love your awesome comic.
  9. I'm in science, and most programs that I applied to say they don't have a set minimum. However, upon inquiring further via email, I was told by one school that they'd like to see around 1000 combined and 1100 by another school. It just depends on your program and also how competitive it is. I don't think a mediocre gre score is going to automatically place you in the reject pile as long as the rest of your application package makes up for it.
  10. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself unless UD is one of your top choices. The error, though significant, is excusable considering the number of applications you were handling at the same time. If UD is one of your top choices, I would call the grad coordinator and find out what your options are. Btw, congrats on UGA and Kentucky!
  11. unc.tarheel - i did my undergrad at ucsb. if you have any questions about the school, pm me. Congrats!
  12. Take up artisan baking and open a bakery. Open an ice cream parlor. Operate a cheese farm. Become a food writer. Do you see a trend here?
  13. Sadly hilarious, if that makes any sense. Back in my undergrad days, my mom would have said stuff like that, too. We should start a thread on Sh*t parents say.
  14. No second thoughts about applying to grad schools. I'm excited to take on a new adventure 3,300 miles away and to be living in snow country. The only catch is this feeling of self doubt that is creeping in. I wonder about whether I could actually get through grad school. I know it's a silly feeling since most new grad students feel like they don't know what they are doing, so I have to keep reminding myself that I got accepted because the adcom saw potential in me.
  15. Hopefully, there is left over after the deposit for a little (or a lot of) celebration.

  18. My mom's response after I told her about grad school plans: Why? You have a job with benefits. Isn't that good enough? You're going to move again? Oh mom.....
  19. Chocoholic, another option is to get a family member to co-sign for you ahead of time. This way you don't have to wait for your financial aid letter. It may not be ideal but could help you secure a place in the time frame that you are comfortable with. Also if you have a substantial savings account, a landlord may accept your bank statement as a source of income. This happened to me when I moved from the mainland to Hawaii several years ago. I did not have a job when I moved here, but the management company accepted my savings account balance as proof of income.
