  1. Seriously! I was obsessively looking through last year's results for my field and figured out that the adcomms will probably begin meeting on Monday - yeesh! As if I wasn't feeling nervous enough... :-S
  2. Hang in there, nohika! :-/
  3. Good idea, Faraday! I'm currently listening to some crazy-good old recordings from the '30s and '40s! "I'll Never Smile Again" - Frank Sinatra and the Tommy Dorsey Band
  4. Exactly! Thank goodness you guys understand. It honestly feels like the safest thing to do; if I plan on not getting in anywhere and come up with a back-up plan, then I'll just be extra super happy if I end up in a funded program! Ha haaaaa! Same here, just substituting gin for the whiskey. Absolutely agree. Dunno what I'd do without this forum to vent to/encourage/rejoice with. A really great community to be part of!
  5. Congratulations on the interviews, and best of luck to you again!
  6. This is exactly my plan to distract myself! I figure that would be the most productive use of my time, anyway! Wow, really? Thanks for the heads-up!
  7. I had a similar dream regarding UNC the other day. Dreamed I didn't submit one piece of my application in time, and they decided all their admits and rejections on one morning, then called to reject me. Hope that's not a sign! Ha haaaaaa! I really, really hope you avoid that! You'll knock it out of the park! Best of luck.
  8. Everyone seems so much more confident in my eventual acceptance than I am, myself. Wonder how much of my anxiety now has to do with my fear of letting all these people down...anyone else feel this kind of unintended pressure from friends/family/profs?
  9. Hey all! I know there might not be many of us, but I was wondering if anyone else here applied for a DAAD grant this year? If so, do any of you know when we can expect to hear back regarding our applications? Please and thank you! And best of luck to you all!
  10. Man, me either! The very earliest I'll hear anything is the very end of January, but most of my programs send out notifications the second week of Feb. I feel like we turned in our apps AGES ago. Seems unfair to make us wait so long!
  11. Thanks, czesc! This is the only one I've heard from at all. Best of luck to you - here's hoping we both get in!
  12. I switched that feature off for the same reason, actually! Also, I suspect that I'd get overly excited every time my phone buzzed...in the long run, it'd probably exacerbate my stress - heh!
  13. Most them will begin meeting (for my field, anyway) probably this upcoming week, or the week after. For specific answers regarding your field, you should check the posted results from last year's application season. You'll have a much better idea of when you can expect to hear back from your programs by checking there.
  14. I think an email to follow up with them (if you've contacted them before) is OK. Just to let them know that you submitted your app, reiterate your interest in working with them/attending the program, etc. Wasn't planning on doing that, myself, for fear of overkill...but I understand many people do!
  15. Ha ha! I think I'm going to try to set a limit on how often I can check my cell phone for emails...I was thinking once an hour, but I have a sneaky feeling it'll be more like once every fifteen minutes come February. I seriously wish I could fast-forward time a few weeks just to get the wait over with!
  16. Wahoo! I'll take all the encouragement I can get. Like you said, it doesn't often come our way.
  17. I think for anyone in the humanities, the personal statement/SOP is the most important part of your application, hands-down. After that, though, I think the LORs and writing sample come in tied for second (with slight preference perhaps given to one or the other depending on the specific program, most likely).
  18. I'm with you, radiomars. I applied to ten different schools, only one of which is in the state I'm currently living in. It's impossible to begin planning any kind of logistics before I figure out where I'll be moving...and it seems pointless to begin dating someone now. I don't have any kind of back-up plan yet either. Jobs aren't too thin on the ground here in Texas, so I'm sure I can come up with something...but I've been in limbo so long now, feeling like I'm just waiting for my life to really start (whatever that means), that I'm terrified by the prospect of not getting in anywhere. It's going to be a rough couple of months as these admissions decisions arrive! Best of luck to everyone! Hang in there!
  19. Agreed! We totally got this! This time next year, we'll be cooling our heels, having completed our first semesters in our new programs. Enjoy the ride, everybody!
  20. I've got it boiled down to a page, single-spaced. Could anyone here do me a serious solid and look it over? Just PM me, and I'll send it right over. Please and thank you!
  21. Good point! Wasn't thinking of it like that...but I suppose that might be because my field is like yours: if you're accepted, you're almost certainly funded. The one doesn't often come without the other.
  22. Very helpful, fuzzylogician - thanks so much! And thank you, PhDream and languages-etc, for your encouragement! It sounds like I have a real chance at this school, so I'll make sure this proposal is the best it can be - don't wanna mess up now!
  23. Heh - I know what you mean! I obsessively checked the results page (for last year) for all the ten of the schools I'm applying to. Most of them won't send anything until the first week of Feb at the earliest...didn't stop me from hoping/checking my email at least twice a day over the break. Like you said, though, I felt comfortable knowing that there wouldn't be anything there. Now that we're inching closer to Feb, I'm beginning to feel butterflies when I check my email. Like ion_echanger, I really, really, worked my butt off on my applications, so I'm trying to feel zen about the fact that I did my absolute best (instead of throwing my apps together at the last minute like I did for my MA). It's going to be a rough couple of months, though, waiting for the responses to come in! Good luck to everyone! I wish you patience and peace during the waiting process, and many offers of admission come decision time. May 2013 be a lucky year for all of us!!
  24. I think in those situations, lots of times they'll set up Skype interviews. That's what I've heard, anyway!
  25. On the other hand, at least an acceptance without funding means they'd like to have you (at least a little), but maybe not enough to spend lots of money on you. A rejection is just a rejection in my book - hope I don't get too many of them!
