  1. I was nearly 24 when I started my MA and will be nearly 26 when I start my PhD program this fall (birthday in October).
  2. Ha ha! Exactly. Or maybe the arrogance came through in their SOP, or something. In any case, I find comments like that on the results board incredibly bitter and petty. They certainly don't attest to the applicant's maturity and emotional preparedness for graduate studies. Knowing how often we will all face possible rejections in the future (post-acceptance to MA/PhD program) - whether because of grant/fellowship proposals, publications, conferences, post-docs, and/or the job market - a healthier attitude toward the word "no" would seem to be in order.
  3. Congratulations to both of you! Such excellent programs! Thanks for the update! I've been wondering when Stanford would be notifying this year...fingers crossed for all of us!
  4. Congratulations!!! Just PM'd you!
  5. Begin as early as possible! I'm going to rate my anxiety (on your 1-4 scale) at a 2.5. Almost halfway done, but defending relatively soon on March 26th. I had better be really productive the next few weeks!
  6. Also, I think I forgot to mention this last week, but the POI who contacted me from UNC Chapel Hill stated that there would be a visiting weekend toward the end of March. I'm thinking that they'll be sending most if their notifications out sometime in mid/late February to allow folks enough time to arrange for travel?
  7. You and I are program twins again! I got the same email from CUNY last night and haven't been quite sure what to expect. Here's hoping this is good news for us!
  8. Man, I felt this way even before I got my first rejection. After seeing several Berkeley admits on this site and not receiving anything, myself, I became convinced that I would be rejected there. And, naturally, since Berkeley was going to reject me, all the other schools were going to reject me, as well. While I turned out to be right about Berkeley, RubyBright is right: the rejection has made the acceptances that much sweeter! Try to hang in there, folks!
  9. Set my thesis defense date and reserved the room...now I just have to write the darn thing! :P

  10. Bleh - I don't wanna!
  11. Exercising and working on my thesis: one stress reliever and one stress inducer, so I like to think it balances out.
  12. Exactly! I'd love to be able to know absolutely 100% for certain what my options are, so that I can get back to my top choice with a definite answer. Hurry up, schools! Ain't nobody got time fo' dat!
  13. I applied for a DAAD grant to study abroad in Leipzig, Germany for two months this summer. However, it's extremely unlikely that I'll win that grant...so I plant to spend my summer moving to my new PhD program (almost definitely UNC), doing some recreational (but still historical) reading so I don't make a fool of myself at said new PhD program, and maybe checking out a bit more of the American South. I'll need a good break after this hectic application process and writing/defending my thesis this semester!
  14. Sure is a slow Friday! After the flurry of activity yesterday, I was hoping for more today. Come on, remaining programs - put me out of my misery!
  15. I'm more or less decided, as well. I've got three fully funded offers right now, but I'm 99.99% certain I'll be headed to UNC Chapel Hill this fall. (Depending on whether or not I get any admissions - and funding - from Michigan, Chicago, or maybe Stanford...extremely unlikely!) I'm basing my decision almost entirely on the program, which has some really established names in my field, is ranked #10 in the nation for European History, and will prepare me really well to be exactly the kind of historian and professor I want to be someday. Everyone there has been really kind to me throughout the process, and the grad students I've written to have confirmed the collegiality of the department and the sufficiency of the financial aid package...plus, I really want to get out of Texas, and Chapel Hill seems like an awfully nice place to live!
  16. Hey there! I was admitted to U Mass Amherst yesterday! Not at Columbia, though, apparently - heh! Congratulations to all the admits! I knew this would be our week!
  17. Exciting times! Good luck to all of us! Hang in there, folks...
  18. I should be working on my dang thesis...oh, well, plenty of time til March, right? Heh heh!
  19. Congratulations!
  20. Congratulations!
  21. So damn true. Hang in there, Rubybright! Surely today will bring some news...?
  22. I was worried about this back in December. When I called them, they said they were having a problem with their computer system (or some such) this year, and not to worry about what their online application status checker says about GRE scores. She said they had them and were sorting through them. I'm wondering if this might push back decisions a couple of weeks, though...?
  23. Good point! I'd obviously much rather attend a program where I was clearly a first choice...but I also figure that beggars can't be choosers, and we poor PhD applicants need all the acceptances we can get...however/whenever they arrive!
  24. Heh - well, anything beginning with "fully funded" is pretty competitive in my book! It might also depend on the cost of living in the areas each school is in and how livable your fundable would be. You've probably already thought of these basics, though! Sorry I don't have any better advice!
  25. Heh - I'm thinking that if we don't receive an acceptance or rejection in the mail this week, we're probably second-round draft picks and are on the unofficial waiting list. Beginning to think I might not be as good a fit for that department as I had initially thought, since I haven't heard a peep. I'm checking religiously just like you, though! I'm sorry the recommendation process is giving you so much trouble! That was the most stressful part of my applications...and I wasn't even applying overseas! Try to hang in there!
