Horb, do you know if there's a spreadsheet for DAAD anywhere on these forums (like the ones we have for previous years' Fulbright results)? I could sure use something new to obsess over...ha ha!
  2. Congrats on the Austria acceptance! Just found out I'm an alternate (A) for Norway...so minor yay, but also back in the limbo of waiting - argh!
  3. AHHHHHH, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! Way to go, Itsax!!!
  4. Children's books for the win. Harry Potter in your foreign language is a nice one for intermediate-level learning, if you're familiar with the series!
  5. I definitely agree with kconhead. My four months of total immersion in the Goethe Institutes in Berlin and Schwaebisch Hall did more for my German than all the classes I took in US schools combined!
  6. No, as far as I know, they didn't give a date by which the official transcripts had to be received...I'll double-check with them, though!

    Let's hope so...my nerves won't last till mid-April!
  8. Looks like Norway has notified on every day of the week (except Friday) in previous years. And usually in the last week of March/first week or so of April...I don't think I can wait that long! Argh!
  9. I don't know if it has any impact on when the decisions are sent out, but a couple of my friends applied for Germany (one-year research grant) and one got a reminder about transcripts two days ago. Dunno if they're still waiting on people's documentation or if they'd send decisions out without having given folks some extra time after this latest notice was sent out. Any insights?

Sadly, nope...still in the agonizing limbo of waiting - argh! I hope we hear soon...we haven't had a word from Fulbright yet either, and I submitted that six months ago.
  11. Hi Itsax! I study Norwegian post-WWII history and am hoping for the Norwegian Fulbright (also applied for some German funding, though!). Looks like you're hoping for Japan? What will you study there? Best of luck to you!
  12. I'd have a lot more motivation to read for my exams if I could just get some good funding news, that's for sure!

That's so cool, SeriousMusician! Best of luck! I'm just sorry you might have to wait so long. I applied for a year-long research grant for history, and folks in my program who've won it in previous years found out in March. Here's hoping!

No change for me...still just "Selection Made." Argh - I hope they tell us one way or another soon! Odds on the decisions coming this week?

Yeah, definitely cautiously optimistic. Not celebrating anything until the official word is out...soon, I hope!

I got "selection made," too, and when I hover my mouse over it, it pops up a little text bubble saying "Selection Made - Row 1 column Application status - Selected." Don't wanna read too much into it, though, because of last year's confusion...but maybe this means we'll all hear the official word soon? Here's hoping!

Has anyone else noticed a change in their application status on the DAAD portal?
  18. Wahoooooooo! So glad the good news has started coming in. Congratulations!!!

Sounds like two great choices! Best of luck to you and to us all!

Horb, I did it for grad and found the stipend covered almost everything. It certainly covered food and local entertainment (of course, I was in provincial Schwaebisch Hall versus a more expensive city like Berlin). Pretty much the only thing I had to shell out for was travel around Southern Germany on the weekends...and even a fair amount of that was covered. A very sweet deal! Are you applying for the Goethe Institut or another program? Any ideas of which locale?

Thanks! I hope we both have good chances of funding...and that they'll let us know soon!

umamam, I'm a research applicant as well! Best of luck to both of us! We're not supposed to hear anything until late-ish March, though I know the committee is meeting in New York this week... Horb, I did an intensive language grant through DAAD a couple years ago and they let me know fairly early on in the process. I got an unofficial email in mid-February, then the official notification in March. Still a ways to go yet, but you might hear something soon...especially if your program would start in June. Best of luck!

zadigblue, I wish I could say I knew something about it. I'm my school's priority applicant, but I'm not really clear how that works. My advisor suggests that priority applicants have about a 70% (or better) chance of getting it, but it's never a sure thing. I guess we'll find out in a couple of months!
  24. Not too many people applying for research in Norway, I imagine, but I heard from my sponsor there that the Fulbright Oslo committee began looking over the recommended applications last week. Hopefully that means we might hear something sooner rather than later!
  25. Favorite folks: 1) Winston Churchill - perfect leader for WWII Britain, and witty as hell 2) Shakespeare - no one more poetic or insightful, in my opinion 3) Sir/St. Thomas More - what an amazingly principled man Infamous folks I study and/or find fascinating: 1) Heinrich Himmler - founder of the Lebensborn program (my specific topic of study) and all-around horrible person 2) Adolf Hitler - because...well, he's Hitler 3) Jack the Ripper - would be amazing if someone could solve that mystery someday
