  1. Thanks! No kidding! I'm not from Houston originally, but have been living here the past three years out in Katy! Not too far from Cy-Fair and Sugarland...though it's kind of a drive into campus at UH. Do you miss Houston lots? I haven't been able to get used to the heat and humidity here at all!
  2. Ha! My dad is awesome at this. He thinks I should go to school somewhere where he can come visit me and go cross-counry skiing. WTH?! Ha ha! That's kind of great...I may have to start doing this, myself.
  3. I don't know too much about your field specifically, but I would HIGHLY recommend going to a Master's program first. You can raise your GPA there, gain even more experience, and make additional contacts (future recommenders). I think PhD programs are much more wiling to invest in someone who's already proven themselves capable of graduate-level work.
  4. Don't give up, czesc! There's still plenty of time. Wishing you all the best of luck!
  5. Great idea! Cats make excellent study buddies. I got one after I moved to my apartment for my MA program...he's a lovely tabby named Nigel!
  6. Congratulations, eaboo! That's terrific!
  7. Wow, 6 interviews! That's incredible! Make sure you stay hydrated, and - as always - best of luck to you, kyjin! Knock 'em dead!
  8. Man, true dat! It's taking up a lot of my time...and, like you said, none of the places are advertising for July/August move-ins yet. Bleh!
  9. Yikes! My sympathies to Northwestern applicants today. The results board looks just like it did on "Berkeley Rejection Day" last week. Not happy times...but try to hang in there! Surely this week will bring better news!
  10. There's a Wisconsin postal service admit up now - congratulations, whoever you are! Such a great program! Maybe everyone else's notification letters will get to them by Monday or Tuesday, if they've been sent out already? Here's hoping it's good news!
  11. Congratulations, sooshaloosh and 33andathirdRPM! I just got accepted to UNC for History and will almost definitely be accepting. Maybe I'll see you guys around town sometime this fall! I'm moving from the Houston area, and - from what I've been reading - am hoping to find a more walking/biking/outdoor friendly town. It sounds like there are lots of great places for graduate students to live in Carrboro, but that is more on the UNC side of things. Not sure about NCSU...but it also sounds like public transportation in that area is quite good (of course, compared to Houston, any city will seem like a transportation haven to me now!).
  12. Ha ha! I know what you mean. I keep checking my Wisconsin app even though the notices (apparently) aren't going to be sent out til next week. And thank you for the valuable advice! I hope you weren't injured too badly (assuming you're speaking from experience)!
  13. Hang in there, you guys! I know what you mean, though...when I hadn't heard from Berkeley, I assumed (quite rightly, as it turned out) that I had been rejected there. And, of course, my mind made the leap that I would then be rejected from all the other schools I applied to. There is still hope - never fear! I know it's hard to be rational right in the middle of decision season, but take a deep breath and try to remain patient and hopeful.
  14. Thanks so much, everyone! Best of luck to all of you still waiting on decisions!
  15. Sounds like the rest of the notifications will be sent out next week? Hopefully, some of us still have a chance there. Don't give up! Congratulations! Such a terrific program!
  16. 2 decisions in, 8 more to go...SO glad it's finally February!

  17. Man, that's a lot of pressure! I have the reverse form of that in my family. My dad has a PhD (in Physics, though - heh!), and he's always telling me how he got accepted to all his programs (including Berkeley, Cornell, etc.). I keep trying to explain that History is a completely different ball game and that times have changed since he went back to grad school in the early '90s. He just acts like it's a no-brainer that I'll get in everywhere, and I don't want to let him down! That's a tough one, annieca...I don't know too much about working in archives. I think you may have to follow a combination of all four of the options you listed. Advice from folks in the field would give you a lot of guidance, and a lot will depend on whether or not you are set on working in the US (or UK!). Best of lucking making this decision - I know how much you love Aber, so you must be torn! Hang in there!
  18. I feel ya, kyjin! Thankfully, my acceptance from UNC came a few hours before my rejection from Berkeley. I was (and still am) in such a state of euphoria, I was able to completely shrug it off. It's an IMMENSE relief to have gotten in somewhere! Man, seriously. It was a day of horror and pain in the History forum. Bloody Berkeley...just kidding - great school, and I wish the admits all the best! I'm sure you'll love it there!
  19. I got my first acceptance yesterday, and rewarded myself with the first really decent night's sleep in a long while. Will be drinks and a movie with friends tonight...and I am definitely planning on rewarding myself with a (much needed) new laptop this summer!
  20. Thanks so much, everyone! I'm wishing you equal luck and happiness with your decisions! And thank goodness it's February. Next week is going to be crazy for us all, I have no doubt. Brace yourselves - we can do this!
  21. I'm adding myself to the list of Berkeley rejects... But adding myself to the new list of UNC Chapel Hill acceptees! My first admit! So incredibly excited - it's the perfect program for me!
  22. Congrats to the latest Berkeley acceptee, whoever you are! Exciting times, folks!
  23. Congratulations, PhDreams!!!!! I'm so happy for you!
  24. Congratulations, kyjin!! I'm so happy for you! Best of luck to those of us still waiting. It's almost February - hang in there!
  25. So true. My dad's always asking why I didn't go into the hard sciences ("you're smart enough and they pay so well"), when all I'm doing is what I actually WANT and LOVE to do. I thought that was supposed to be every parent's dream for their kids?
