  1. That's exactly what I figured, but I have also called BS on some smaller conferences that in the end I knew people who went to. So I'm now overly cautious about how overly cautious I am
  2. Just wanted to make sure that I wasn't being overly cynical in disregarding a series of invited to present at this conference (http://www.bitcongress.com/analytix2017/default.asp) The email to me seems spammy but maybe its a language barrier? " Dear Dr. X, I apologize for the inconvenience if the letter disturbed you more than once. I'm writing to follow-up my last invitation as below, would you please give me a tentative reply? Thank you. We are proud to launch the 5th Annual Conference of AnalytiX-2017 (AnalytiX-2017), will take place March 22-24, 2017, Fukuoka, Japan, with a theme “Emerging Trends in Analytical Science”. On behalf of the organizing committee, it is an honor to welcome you to attend this meeting and present a speech on NAME OF PAPER I PUBLISHED... in Track 4: Crystallography at AnalytiX-2017." Thoughts? I blow off things like this all the time as BS but normally they aren't so persistent.
  3. Thanks for the update bio, I am still waiting for official notification. My host was notified and submitted my acceptance maybe a month ago almost, but still no word on my end. I only found out because I had to push back my start date. Waiting for official word is somehow more brutal than waiting with no word. Good luck to all!
  4. I still haven't gotten official notice from Japan either, only the unofficial word a few weeks back.
  5. I also received an email yesterday from NSF stating my application would be forwarded to the partner organization (Japan).
  6. Also still waiting. It's brutal! Anyone who is still waiting on GROW planning to travel regardless - with EAPSI or otherwise?
  7. I received an HM as an undergrad and was awarded as a first year. My first set of reviews were VG/VG VG/E VG/E and the second year were VG/VG E/E E/E. I only had positive reviews my first year including two reviewers which said that I deserved to be awarded - in fact they were much more glow-y than the year I was awarded. But in the end I decided to completely toss my first application and start from scratch. For one thing I figured even if I didn't win I would have learned a tremendous amount about a brand new project as well as the art of writing applications (which is never ending in grad school and beyond).
  8. I took a medical withdrawal in my undergrad (early on) and it was not an issue when I applied to grad schools. I didn't bring it up and neither did my PIs. It seemed like a complete non-issue.
  9. Mine also still says pending. And my email did not get sent to the spam folder. But it did sound like offers were going to roll out over several weeks.
  10. Got a tentative offer for Japan at 3pm!
  11. My status has also changed from external review to pending. And just checking my stomach was in my throat even though I knew that it wouldn't be posted there before they emailed us. It's like the NSF GRFP all over again - not for the faint of heart!
  12. Mine says peer review on 02/01/16 - so I second the idea that this might be variable by subject. I am in the Geosciences btw.
  13. Also waiting on Japan. While last year they notified at the end of Jan., it looks like the year before it was closer to Valentine's Day, so I am trying not to make myself crazy. (Failing but trying). Good luck everyone!
  14. I have ALL the questions CRJ. But first and foremost - what did you do about being awarded both awards? Did you decline one or accept both? How did you work that out logistically?
  15. While I understand there are systematic issues with standardized testing I also was told by my current PhD advisor that he only even considered my application because of my GRE scores. I was a nontraditional student, from a no-name school which I picked because it was affordable and where I lived, and he had no way to calibrate my application against the others in his stack besides the GRE. I had high grades but without knowing anything about my undergrad school he didn't know if those were meaningless or not. I can imagine for other nontraditional students or students trying to make a giant prestige-leap that standardized testing can be crucial (for better or worse). On the other hand, I can see how terribly things might have gone if so much weight had been put on this one test and it hadn't gone so well. Yet what other way can we calibrate students with such vastly different backgrounds? I am not convinced there is an alternative, and until there is, I think GREs should be at least an optional component of one's application (although the fee is outrageous, but that is its own issue).
  16. My advisor works best with a deadline & if you can get him hyped about a project. With enough hype & a looming deadline I can occasionally get next day delivery. On the other end of the spectrum, if it's a project he is not particularly stoked about and there isn't a hard deadline (for example a manuscript) there is no knowing how long he might take. I am literally on the 118th day of waiting for feedback on a draft of something I want to submit for publication. It's become a running joke, except, you know... not as funny as a joke usually is.
  17. First off, shout out the the awesome person who shared their budget proposal w/me. That was super helpful. Also, I was wondering, is anyone else applying to both the GROW and the EAPSI programs for the same country? Did you find you could reuse much of the same application? My country has a pretty short minimum stay so most of my application remains the same - I am hoping there is no overlap in the review committees.
  18. I applied as well (Japan) and will also be applying to the GROW to go to Japan. I don't think if some miracle occurs and I get both that I can take both - just trying to bolster my odds of being able to collaborate with this person. Anyone else feel wholly unable to assess their application? I feel like with the GRFP there's enough information online and from my peers irl that I could at least build a strong application but here it seems like anyone's guess.
  19. I was wondering if anyone would be open to sharing their budget proposal with me? Its the one aspect of the application where I am floundering a bit. Feel free to pm me if you don't want to post here. Thanks!
  20. I just wanted to reiterate that there is a lot of inconsistency in grading between schools and even within each school between departments. My roommate and I attend the same school but in different departments (of the same division). In her department everyone basically has a 4.0 or close to it. In mine few people have as high as a 3.5 GPa. A 4.0 wouldn't be considered a red flag I would think, but I've yet to meet anyone with a GPa above a 3.7 in my department. We have a lot of professors who throw out B-/C+'s like rice & no one blinks an eye as long as your average is above a 3.0. I just wanted to put that out there in case there is any first year student in a department like mine reading a thread about how everyone in grad school has a near perfect GPa who is hyperventilating into a paper bag.
  21. Hey guys, I have a GROW related question and I thought you guys might be the best resource for answering it since there's not much info about GROW online. I'm interested in applying for the coming cycle (japan) and my potential host and I are at the point o trying to determine how long of a duration is ideal. What length of GROW did you apply for? How did you decide & what factors went into your decision? Thanks for any and all feedback. Congrats to everyone who got the GROW last year and good luck to those looking to apply.
  22. Unrelated (I think) to any above religious debate - I hate toilet seat covers. As in, the paper disposable toilet seat covers in public bathrooms. Clearly they only exist by some sort of popular demand but let's be real here - they're paper. What are they really gonna do to protect you? And why does it always seem that the same people who are afraid of cooties enough to use them also leave them on the toilet seat half the time for the next used to deal with? It's a punk move to be a germaphobe who forces someone to touch your strange rump paper. </end rant>
  23. I love tillandsias (commonly called air plants) for indoors and they are pretty hardy if they get light. In particular, I've never even seen my xerographicas (giant air plants) so much as flinch, even when I have to travel for work a few weeks at a time and forget to have someone water them. Plus, they are strangely adorable.
