  1. I get 24# paper that is smooth, usually will pay a bit more for this but its much better to write on. For pens, I prefer the Uniball Elite or the Uniball weatherproof ones so as to avoid smudging and smearing. However, I still enjoy my 0.3mm mechanical pencil.
  2. I am a year older than my gf, and graduating a year sooner. She will be abroad in Asia next semester then when she graduates, she will be in the military so my going abroad for a 3 year PhD program won't really be that much of an issue, as there would not be much visiting happening any way. We have also been going out for 2.5 years and visit each other about once a month if lucky, and usually do not see one another during the summer. We have both talked about what will happen and neither of us expect to see the other for the first year, since it will be her sr year and my first year at the PhD program (read: no sleep, no friends). The next two years would depend on where she was stationed, and if we decided to get a courthouse wedding for the spousal benefits and location.
  3. My undergrad BS degrees are in pure math and civil engineering with an emphasis in structures. I got into a 3 year UK PhD program investigating structural deformations, but my structural knowledge is mostly limited to building and steel/concrete properties.
  4. Undergrad Institution: Southern California School Major(s): Civil Engineering, Pure Mathematics GPA in Major: 3.6/4.0 Length of Degree: 4 Type of Student: American GRE Scores (old version): Q: 800 V: 560 W: 4.5 Research Experience: One summer doing physics research at undergraduate institution. 1 summer at East Coast institution doing environmental research on Shale Gas. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's List, Multiple institutional scholarships and fellowships, grant to conduct research on MOSE, Tau Beta Pi. Related Experience (ie jobs): Math and engineering TA and tutor. Recommendations : Four letters from professors I have nad five or more times. All very strong and presumably realistic about me (namely good and bad included). Applied to: Structural doctoral programs Cambridge University - Accepter, but with no funding (presumably none given for first years). Georgia Tech University of Texas: Austin University of Washington - Accepted into PMP (Professional Master's), rejected from Masters
  5. Quick question, does anyone know about phd program differences between Cambridge and US grad programs (aside from the year difference), for structures. I am still waiting to hear back from Austin but I was wondering if anyone had any advice. Thanks
  6. I got into the Cambridge Engineering Dept. but I heard back around Jan 7th or so.
