Interesting! Well the "All Schools" post was written like an admissions FYI from some anon professor on a committee. It was listed as "other" and then requested people don't use names when they're posting on the results page.
-
See my post directly above yours. I assumed the NYU post was just a fraudulent accept, because I didn't see it. Is that right?
-
For those who didn't see it before it was deleted it basically said please don't write the names of the professor who emailed you (good news) because they have been harassed by the rejected in the past. They listed it for "All schools" and Philosophy. One could assume that an admissions committee person (perhaps one named recently on the results page) posted that to the page. It would be odd for an applicant to have done it. That's why others are assuming that at least one admissions person has at least looked at the page.

I thought it was super weird bc the DGS / admissions contact is usually listed on the school's website. If this is public knowledge then I don't know why it would make any difference listing their names here...
-
To be fair they do say *by,* so there's hope yet.
-
ugh, that's so far out...

I've noticed personally that late afternoon/early evening tends to be the time... like 4-5pm. (This is my second admissions cycle). I assume this is because the prof charged with calling or emailing procrastinates to the end of the day, completing the task right before they leave their office.

I'm WL for M&E, but to be fair this is just a theory so I wouldn't stress. There's been literally nothing on the results pg for NW besides me, so I fully expect there's more good news to be sent out.
-
When I followed up about the WL he said that they have 5 WLs based on AOI. So there's a possibility that northwestern only notified the accept(s)/WL for metaphysics & epistemology. Just speculation at this point, but completely possible.
-
I didn't apply there but I thought that was weird. Why even bother sending a message like that?
-
Mine was an email from Baron Reed. Notably, my app portal has not posted a decision yet.
-
Wait listed for Northwestern! This gives cred to acceptances being sent out yesterday/today.
-
I wouldn't worry about responding, they're probably not even expecting a reply. A simple thank you is enough.

That's on my to-read list

We just need to keep ourselves occupied until the end of the month, that's when the fun starts! (And by fun I mean paranoid phone/email/results page checking). Personally, the fall semester was a lot of work so I'm using the break to binge on TV and read some non-philosophy books. I'm trying to give myself a break, I recommend you netflix it up for the next couple of weeks! I hear making of a murderer is good.

What do you think about the CUNY Graduate Center?
philosophe replied to pecado's topic in Philosophy
I had a friend who was waitlisted and went to visit. He said that the grad students seemed strained and had more teaching duties than the other schools that he visited. That being said, if it was my only offer and it was enough for rent I'd definitely go. You could do a lot worse that NYC. -
How many reminders are too many for letter writers?
philosophe replied to Chrysippus'Doge's topic in Philosophy
Almost all of my recommenders submitted within 1-3 days of my first deadline. Drove me crazy, but as long as it's in on time that's all that matters! Don't worry unless it's the day of and no letter's been submitted. -
The "To which other universities are you applying?" Question
philosophe replied to philosophe's topic in Philosophy
No need to be so abrasive. I'm sure there are virtually no new questions to be found, as students have all the same concerns year after year. That being said, your answer is helpful. I was merely wondering if anyone else in this admissions cycle (applying specifically for philosophy) planned to bypass this question or list their schools. -
The "To which other universities are you applying?" Question
philosophe posted a topic in Philosophy
Hi friends, I've ben trying to get a start on the apps that are available online before the craziness of the semester starts. Most of them ask something along the lines of "To which other schools are you applying?" I have mixed feels about responding to this question. I'm uncomfortable with how this information might be used... Any thoughts? Will you be listing your schools on the application? -
Hi friends, I'm rearing up for take 2, after applying a few years ago and receiving a few funded acceptances from low ranking phd programs. I'm currently at a great (funded) MA program, and I'm looking forward to (hopefully) reaching higher this year. I'm figuring out my writing sample, but everything else is ready to go. I'm applying to all of the usual suspects for epistemology. Question -- when do you think is the appropriate time to ask for letters? I've heard everything from September to November. Also, I'm kind of annoyed no one posts their apps until September. Now's when we have plenty of time to take care of that busy work! Wish there were a common app because that would save us a bajillion hours.

Hey, I have a question. I'm really into epistemology and planning on applying to UT Austin, but I was wondering if you could tell me -- do you feel like it's a good place to be for someone with that AOI? I see that that's partially your thing too, do you feel like there's enough advanced coursework / faculty advisors to be happy there as an epistemology focused grad student? Thanks in advance!

I haven't heard of any graduate departments "superscoring" -- in fact, I haven't heard this expression since high school SATs. Does anyone know of departments that do superscore? I've never considered asking, because I've assumed it's a no-go. (I'm re-taking the GRE in two weeks and have been trending better in verbal and worse in math than my previous score, so this could potentially be a saving grace for me.)

I agree with the above response. If possible, you should consider an MA program or post-bac (depending on where you're located). That way you can have a chance to present a more stable, positive academic record, and have a better launching point from which you can apply to phd programs. That being said, if you're getting applications together already and don't mind the app fees, you could send them off to a few Phd programs. It certainly doesn't hurt, but of course they are wildly competitive, so you would want to choose lower ranked schools where you would have more of a chance of being considered. If you take this route, you would want to explain your circumstance in your personal statement. All in all, if you're unsure if this is the road for you, the only way the path will be available to you is to apply, so keep your options open and decide based on any acceptances.
