  1. Can I just say that I really hope we hear from U Mass Amherst tomorrow...
  2. gah, it makes me wonder how many are false. so wrong.
  3. What on earth is up with that cornell accept entry?: "The philosophy department rejected your application. But I, as dean, did not concur with this decision. Therefore you are accepted."
  4. So it looks like I'll be visiting Rochester March 16-17. I'm waiting to hear more about the fellowship at Iowa before I make any plans... it seems like it might be substantially less money, which might just make my decision easy. Anyone else visiting either of those schools?
  5. I'm waiting to enter until I clarify info on my fellowships, but this looks great! Wonderful idea.
  6. So I took the weekend off from TGC, I come back to 150 notifications... and worst of all, catching up resulted in my using up my upvotes in the first 5 minutes! Thank you to all of you who have made me laugh I'm bummed that I could not upvote all of you appropriately.
  7. Congrats! You've got so many amazing programs to choose from!
  8. Can anyone claim the CUNY accept? I'd love more info on that.
  9. Totally lol'd but out of upvotes.
  10. That's wonderful news!!! Congratulations!!!!
  11. Ugh, why am I always out of up votes when people decide to be hilarious?
  12. I'd be happy to do that. Anyone else interested?
  13. to the entire grad school, all concentrations
  14. Question for people who applied to the UBC Phd -- do you already have your master's? Basically my advisor indicated that I couldn't apply directly from BA to Phd, so I applied to the MA. Just wanted to check on that.
  15. I feel like I'm guilty of thinking everyone's a guy unless their screenname indicates otherwise, if only because I know philosophy is dominated by men. As a woman, I'm not offended if, for example, I get "bro"ed, etc. on the threads.

Thanks! I found this very helpful.
  17. I too disagree with this advice. There are dozens of well-regarded schools out there that do not have phd programs and are therefore not on PGR. My school is a top 35 nationally acclaimed school with no PGR ranking in sight, and I have been successful.
  18. Thanks! So I still haven't heard from the department, but when I login to the application status pg with my hawkid/password (https://login.uiowa.edu/uip/login.page?service=https://isis5.uiowa.edu/isis/) and click on "admissions profile," I can scroll down and it says "Admissions Decision: Admitted" (under Admissions Fee: paid) and it has a letter I can view. If you wait list, unless they offer me a lot of funding, I believe I'm going to turn down the offer. Good luck to you!
  19. Not that I've seen. I'll believe it when I see other accepts. Since your there, do you have any insight into how many spots they're trying to fill?
  20. Actually, I have to say grad cafe really softened the blow of the rejections for me... mainly because I can tell by everyone else's stats I'm in excellent company. Also, it was good to infer my status, and I felt better about my rejections when I knew they were on the way. But maybe that's just me.
  21. Congratulations! I'm glad it paid off for you!
  22. The one thing I regret is not contacting professors in my areas of interest prior to applying. I would recommend you do that, since it can't hurt (as long as you are polite and ask relevant questions). To any future applicants out there worried about or considering a possible gap year -- I just wanted to emphasize that I have taken a year and a half off to work, and I'm glad that I did it. I have had two full time jobs, an understanding of adult life, and no one can tell me that I'm choosing to pursue a PhD because I'm afraid of "the real world." I've also saved up enough money that I can suplement my stipend. Overall, I think it was super beneficial, though you need to make sure to touch base with your letter writers so they don't forget about you. I recommend asking them to look over your materials the summer before the application season, when they're not yet busy with classes. Besides that, narrow down the list of schools you're applying with one of your professors in your area of interest. It's overwhelming because there are so many programs, and the acceptance rate is so low that it all seems like a real crap shoot. The best thing I did for my application was to talk to an epistemologist, and he literally took a list of 30 schools and checked off the ones he knew were strong in epistemology. Last -- get your materials in early! I did not have a stressful time because I applied to most schools in november, and ordered my transcripts early. I think a lot of other people felt the pain of a missing transcript, while I had pleanty of time to reorder. Someone's going to lose your transcript. It just happens. Do yourself a favor and start early.
  23. OH MY GOD I WOULD DIE. Congratulations!!!! That's incredible! Enjoy it
