  1. It's a pretty great school to have as your only option, that's for sure! I think the time between acceptance and visit weekend has made me feel more ambivalence about my choices than I would have two weeks ago.
  2. Hey, gwarner, are you planning to go to the UT Austin visit weekend? I'm at a place where I feel mildly confident about my choice, but I'm far too conflicted to make a final decision without visiting. I wish it was scheduled earlier, though!
  3. I just got my rejection from them in the mail. They do seem to have a lot of acceptances this year, so maybe they didn't do a waitlist; I got my waitlist notification from them around this time last year and it was through email. I'm just surprised I didn't at least get an offer for their unfunded MA program. I don't even know what to make of it.
  4. Oh my god, this is huge! Congrats! I'm so happy for you; I know you felt so discouraged last week and I'm glad you now have a reason to celebrate!
  5. Yes, they are different. Down voting is, I think, just expressing your opinion of the post. Reporting is telling the moderators that something in that post is inappropriate and should be removed. And yeah, it's really rude to make comments about people's understanding of the discipline, but we've been dealing with that sort of thing for ages, right? When I say censoring, I'm talking about reporting posts that are controversial, though not really hate speech, because one doesn't like it. As for the nastiness between you and DontHate? No, I don't know what's been going on between the two of you, and I'm sorry about that. I don't know how I could help knowing anything about that though. I have expressed my distaste for many of the things that they've said previously, but I'm speaking specifically to their opinions about Penn State. They might not have been tactful, kind, or engaging, but they were opinions that were at the least valid. I mean, there's an entire thread over in "decisions, decisions" about it.
  6. I don't get it guys, when did we start downvoting and reporting people for sharing their opinions? I mean, DontHate may have said something that everyone doesn't agree with, yet even though she did state that that was a personal opinion and not a judgment, those posts have been downvoted into the ground. Now pomoisdead gets downvoted for clarifying their previous comments? Yeah, the nerves are high and things are touchy right now, but I don't really understand why there seems to be so much censoring going on. Reporting things that aren't personal attacks or nasty trolling seems like a gross overreaction to me. Just my two cents.
  7. Hey all, I just wanted to let you know that I think all of the acceptances have already gone out. I got an email with some details about visiting weekend, and it was addressed to "admitted students." I don't think they would have sent that out if they weren't done with, at the very least, the first round of acceptances. Maybe waitlists will be forthcoming?
  8. ME TOO. I just think they sound really silly coming out of my mouth, and I'm not one for making up words, even if it is in service of making the world a bit less heteronormative. Singular "they" is my best friend
  9. Congrats on Lehigh!!! I seriously considered applying there. The thought process was basically, "hey, I could live at home if I went to Lehigh!" followed quickly by "oh god, would I have to live at home if I went to Lehigh?" Their whole built on the side of a giant hill shtick didn't help either. Not much of a walker.
  10. I wish! The number of times that people have assumed that my 13-year-old brother is actually my son is, frankly, insulting.
  11. No problem, I'm happy to answer any questions you have! I'm still holding out hope for your UNC waitlist, too!
  12. No problem! It's been really great; if things don't work out for you with apps, I hope you can make use of it. I really think getting my feet wet in graduate classes and getting an LOR from a professor here helped me immensely.
  13. Sorry, can't help with that, but if you don't mind a bit of product placement, I would recommend you check out the program that I'm currently in. It's a diversity initiative here at Pitt, but diversity means MANY things so you may be eligible. It has been an awesome learning experience, and as far as I know everyone who's done it so far has gone on to really great PhD programs. It's basically been my "gap year" after the last app cycle epic failed. http://www.diversity.as.pitt.edu/hot-metal-bridge-program
  14. Damn straight! I haven't seen it in about 10 years.
  15. 23 in a few weeks. Hoping to finish grad school before 30!
  16. Alas, not a warm fuzzy person in real life (I am friendly though!). Something about apps makes me feel all "united we stand, divided we fall." Solidarity! Virginia had about five acceptances in the first week of February, so I've assumed I'm not getting one. I think they might have been phone calls.
  17. Thanks! My excitement has been reduced to a slow simmer, but let me tell you, the two days after I got in were spent randomly squealing like a little girl and not sleeping because I couldn't stop thinking about it. It was definitely a super mature reaction
  18. This is probably really weird, but I think my favorite part about everyone getting so many acceptances is that in a few months, everyone will have chosen which one they'll go to and then there will be another flurry of awesome people getting off of waitlists. Happiness all around!
  19. Hey, this shit super sucks.Let those tears out. The feeling of not being good enough for the acceptance you have is so unbelievably legitimate; I got my acceptances over a week ago and I'm still terrified that someone's gonna call me and say "oops, sorry made a mistake." Needing validation is human, but in a month we'll be able to look at this with the eyes of normal, rational people and be thankful and happy that someone is paying us to go to school and think hard and write amazing new scholarship for the next six awesome years.
  20. Definitely call her up. I'm a fan of the staggered approach; better to have more concrete info about the program now, so you can mull it over a bit, than trying to get all the info from all of your programs at once when your future acceptances arrive. Especially if it's one that you feel strongly about.
  21. You should just put them on there and if anyone questions you, be like "Um, those are totes legitimate, so suck it."
  22. So this is definitely a systemic thing, then? I have a friend who went there for undergrad and, three years later, she still says "go blue!" far more than necessary. She also regularly drives up there for games.
  23. Just wanted to add that placement rates are extremely important. UConn boasts a placement rate of 80%, but if you look at those placements, the majority of them are for 1-3 year appointments; the tenure-track appointments look like there are one a year, maybe two. You want to go somewhere that will get you a job, whether because of prestige, or because they prepare you better for the job market.
  24. Yeah, they need to acknowledge that we are a powerful force to be reckoned with! Jk. As to the monopoly, imagine if that did happen. We'd be gradcafe legends! "Remember that year when BOTH admits to Michigan's English and Women's Studies program were in gradcafe? So epic." I wouldn't say no to that.
