Looks the the first acceptances of the season are going out! Cal State Northridge Distance Program. Good luck to all who applied to the distance program!
-
I did my undergrad at CSUN and applied last year to the distance learning program. What insight did you want? I know most the professors for the online masters. I know that you need to find your own preceptors(SLP's that will monitor you). I also have heard that if you are already an SLPA, they prefer that since it shows you will easily find someone to be your preceptor.

Application Anxiety Thread
twinguy7 replied to autismadvocate's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I was wondering what an "orange school" means when referring to CSDCAS? How do yu find that stuff on their site??? -
This is a great question because it seems everyone has a different idea of what a "less competitive" school or program. I guess my definition and reason for starting this thread would be that a "less competitive" school would be one where there are less applicants AND the GPA/GRE requirements are lower than other schools. This makes the school more likely to accept those with lower GPA's and lower GRE scores. for example here is ENMU GPA's and GRE's of those accepted in recent years and also how many applications they got. Undergraduate GPA Major GPA GRE Verbal GRE Quantitative GRE Writing Number of Complete Applications 2013 3.48 3.58 151 146 4 140 2012 3.37 3.58 150 144 4 92 2011 3.39 3.51 422 475 4 72 2010 3.30 3.53 400 464 3.5 Data not kept 2009 3.22 3.37 376 398 3.75 Data not kept I would classify Eastern New Mexico University as a less competitive school. Some may classify a less competitive school just on ratio of applicants to how many they accept, but that does not take into account the GPA's and GRE scores of those applicants. The school may merely get less applicants just because everyone knows they only accept the highest GPA's and GRE scores. How would others classify a less competitive school?

Has your husband taken the GRE more than once and got AW 3.0 every time? I got a 3.5 the first time and 3.0 the second(when I studied!). I think he will fair well at FHSU because I have been in contact with one of the Chairs for the last 8 months and he said at least at FHSU they know that AW scores are being graded differently and he thinks a 3.0 isn't a bad thing.

I decided to see if I could start a thread for those of us applying to "Less Competitive" Schools/Programs. While I love the SLP 2014 Applicant thread and will still comment and read it, I wanted to see if there were applicants who are applying to schools outside of the bigger programs and CA, NY, FL, etc. I personally am applying to a lot of midwest/southwestern schools that are not as competitive as the bigger schools. Idaho State, West Texas A&M, Jackson State, Central Arkansas, Valdosta, Fort Hays State, Grand Valley State, Western Carolina and Texas AM-Kingsville.( See In My SIGNATURE) Any one else out there applyig to less competitive programs? AND WHY? I am doing it because I have a low OVERALL GPA and most of these schools look at your last 60 units GPA. Hope you all enjoy this thread!

MSc SLP in Canada, what are my chances?
twinguy7 replied to SLP-want2b's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
It sounds to me by this post that you have not shadowed an SLP? What has sparked your interest besides languages? If it's just languages you are interest in, then you might be best with linguistics? I say you should shadow SLP's to get a feel for it before dedicating your schooling towards it. IT sounds like you have not taken any Comm Disorders classes yet also as you mentioned you need to take pre-req classes still..... I guess I'm more of a conservative but I would lean towards the program you got acccepted to. I am also a religous man, so I;d also say pray about it, but it's all up to you! -

SLP Masters: Do I have a chance?
twinguy7 replied to gronkow2's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I would say you have a chance! I have pretty much the same MAJOR GPA and prerequisite GPA as you do(3.28) but I have an overall GPA of 2.77 because of no interest in school my first 2 years. I am applying to 13 schools all of which who have told me they accept people with my background/GPA/GRE. MY GRE is V-152, Q-150 and AW 3.5. I did take a year off this past year after graduating and have worked in neuroscience and as an SLP for charter schools which should help. But if I get into one of the 13 programs I will let you know! I will also let you know which programs I got wait listed to also. GOOD LUCK! there is always hope if you are putting your ALL into the Major/Field. -
An ASHA board member gave me this advice about the University of the Pacific: "University of the Pacific: I know this director also. they seem to have good administrative support" Of course it's probably one of the most expensive programs at about $66k but after a year you are basically done as you spend that last semester on your externship in a city of your choice. So it seems to be a good program and you'll be done a whole year earlier.

I I agree with caterpillar... your stats and experience are great! I wouldnt worry about applying to another school, but in case you did want to there are a few whose deadlines are not until march 1st. I personally am applying to 13 schools because my OVERALL GPA is 2.77 and my GRE's are mediocre. I emailed over 100 schools last May and the 13 schools I am applying to all have taken chances with applicants like me who have horriible overall GPA's, but have shown improvement in their last 60 units/credits(3.34 for me). So it all depends on what those 4 schools are looking for also.

Same here in respects to last year. I applied to just 2 online schools because my wife got into a nursing program at CSUN where I did my undergrad. We are California Natives as well but realize how competitive it is here also. We are actually excited to hopefully live somewhere else for at least 2 years.

Hey, Just noticed your husband is applying to 3 of the schools I am applying to! I havn't seen anyone applying to Fort Hays, Jackson state or Central Arkansas on here except me and your husband!
-
wow! I thought I was applying to a lot of schools! Good job on getting them done! I am practically done with all of my 12 apps, but just waiting for one of my recommenders letters for 5 of my schools. But hats off to you! It's a lot of work but worth it if just one says yes!
-
I am pretty sure they will mostly look at just the courses they require, but will also look at all 9 i'm sure. I have taken 44 units of slp courses but schools have told me that only like 30 units of that is calculated into my SLP GPA.

I was wondering if you ended up getting into a school? I am currently going to be applying to 11 schools for fall 2014.

HELP! :( Stuck and I don't know what to do
twinguy7 replied to SarahTilley13's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I am curious to know which schools you applied to for spring admissions, just in case I end up having to do the same thing. Thanks -
There are a lot more distance learning programs than you probably think. Idaho state, Cal state Northridge, Northern Arizona, Nova are all distance programs I can think of off the top of my head. I have been emailing with an ASHA board member and he told me first thing that distance programs produced very un-experienced SLP's by what he's seen. But its all what you make of it!

Thanks! I think I got it figured out!

HELP! :( Stuck and I don't know what to do
twinguy7 replied to SarahTilley13's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I agree with most of the posts. Send the first one. And as Erica just said, stay positive. There are also schools that have Spring admissions which are easier to get into than fall I've heard. Do well on your statement of intent and be realistic with yourself. I have a HORRIBLE overall GPA(2.77) so I focused on schools that look at your last 60 and also schools where no one wants to go because the city or local is undesirable(midwest, etc). I am applying to 11 schools and I'd be happy to get on a waitlist or 2 Hope that helps! Mike -
I completed an app on CSDCAS friday the 6th and it was verified and complete by the 16th of this week. So it takes about 10 days it seems.
-
How do you all make that bottom part to your posts that shows Bachelors, applying to, accepted and rejected and waitlisted? I need a helper to help me figure that out thanks!

hello, I do have a spread sheet with like 20-30 schools that take people based on their last 60 GPA. Would you like that? whats your email?
