CONGRATS! -
Hmmm it is a very hard decision indeed! I have had this discussion with myself a million times in regards to UofP and GVSU which both have the accelerated programs and inflated prices to go along with that. I had always thought that the deposits were $100 so $500 makes the decision even harder I bet. I always rule on the side of caution so if it were me I'd probably pay the deposit because nothing is guaranteed and you could hear back possibly by april 1st from the other schools to get that deposit back. Also depends on if you have that extra $500 to spend on that. It's a fought decision but I'd rule on the side of safety and make the deposit to the guaranteed acceptance. Hope that helps?

SLP California Applicants for Fall 2014

I emailed the director like it said in the email. He said everyone gets sent to the regular application pool who did not get accepted. IT does mean we still have a chance but I was also told that there are the same amount of apps that come in for the reg app pool so its still a smaller chance. -

Interesting! My wife does not have/remember dreams often, but they are usually something bad about me(not getting into school). With me, I dream a lot! I can probably remember/have dreams a couple of times a week it seems like. Mine are usually random with something from my teenage to pre marriage days or it is actually significant. I have had a few dreams that actually had pertinence to something that happened soon after. -
SLP California Applicants for Fall 2014

lol true! But I found out that there were no rejections from the early applicant pool. If you were not accepted, then you were moved to the regular applicant pool. But yea, still better than a rejection I guess! -

lol sounds like mine and my wife's dreams. She always has the pessimistic dreams and I have the optimistic dreams..... but it goes along with our personalities... so makes sense! I'm guessing same with you and your husband Caterpillar? -
Sorry about the rejection smartypants, hope there is better news soon! Sayjo- I think that is a good idea

Just got an email from University of the Pacific. I applied for their "Early Applicant Pool"(dec. 6th deadline) and I did not get accepted but am automatically pushed over to the feb. 1st deadline pool of applicants and reevaluated again. Better than a straight rejection right?

Anyone finish their master's early?
twinguy7 replied to emikate51's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
There are at least 2 schools with accelerated programs, Grand Valley State and University of the Pacific(Stockton). They are both only 15months. You finish everything in a year and the last semester you do the medical externship wherever you want in the U.S. So essentially your only there at the school for a year! -

No Worries ImpulsiveNixie, Sadly I agree with side of the debate that affects the Speech-Language Cases and more importantly, the students. I am glad to be getting experience, yet on the other end like you said..... the students that I work with are getting 2nd rate therapy. It was hard for me the first couple of months because I realized that the students in these small schools are not getting the therapy they deserve. Even though I am practicing as their SLP, I am basically an SLPA. I am given their goals from their IEP's and I work with them on those goals. I am not authorized by my company to assess or test. Whenever a student has reached a goal, they are then assessed by a "real SLP" and that SLP makes the new goal for me. There are SOO many issues with the whole process that made me sad for the students I have. The whole Charter school system is a pretty sad thing also. ALL of the kids speech, occupational, psychiatric, etc. therapies are given by people in my same position. We are all bachelor degree therapists who work for a year before going on to get a masters so these kids are getting 2nd rate therapy. I could go on about how bad charter schools are also since it's basically the same problems but I won't. Sadly from my experience, it all comes down to $$$. My company pays me $25/hr(about the rate of an SLPA in Ca) and they probably charge the school $10-25/hr more than that and they pocket that extra $$$ because the charter school will pay that price because they think I am a credentialed SLP. Anyways, I'm glad you brought that up ImpulsiveNixie, because as an insider on the whole SLPA, SLP(waiver credential) debate..... I would say its very sad. Sadly $$$ corrupts everything, even therapy services for the innocent kids in charter/private schools. I've always wanted to vent about the situation so I feel better for getting that off my chest Thanks -

Also, for New York this website shows a chart and what you need (bachelors, masters, etc.) to be and SLP. I guess you can be a Teacher of Students with Speech-Language Disabilities with just a Bachelors. http://www.nysslha.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3492 Also: I sent off my 14th and FINAL application packet to Jackson State yesterday! Yea, I am pretty lucky. I guess like 5 years ago or more the credential waiver was like a 5 year waiver so you could practice for 5 years as an SLP with a bachelors in California, but since like 2008 or something like that they reduced it since there were more SLP's to fill openings. I just happened to be looking for SLP Assistant jobs that required just a bachelors and not the actual SLPA license and happened to get this job with this company that helps you get your credential waiver. I have heard that Minnesota or Montana and Florida also allow SLP's to work with just a bachelors. In Montana's case I think it was because the caseload/school's where they need them are so small and in remote cities that actual credentialed SLP's would never take a small job like that. -
Sounds like you have a great shot at getting in this year AmandaLee! All I could hope for is some wait lists like you got last year! How did the whole wait list process go? Any insight? What was it like being on a wait list for a few months? Highs and lows? I wanna know what it will be like if I get a wait list!

I am currently working as an SLP at a few charter school sites in Los Angeles County. California allows a "credential waiver" for a year for those with a bachelors degree to fulfill the need for SLP's in smaller private and charter schools. For example..... all 4 of my schools have a total enrollment of about 300 students each. 2 middle schools and 2 high schools. My caseloads at each school are: 6, 4, 4 and 16 for a total of 30 students amongst the 4 schools. They also allow for one additional year on a credential waiver if you get accepted into a grad program or you pass the CBEST test before the 2nd year. hope that helps explain being an SLP with just a bachelors. -

Yea, I work at a few charter schools doing everything but assessments(testing). I was told by one school when searching for schools to apply to that just because I was working as an SLP didn't give me any extra "points". But then again, it was a school I wasn't qualified to apply to anyways because of the overall GPA under 3.0. -

autism advocate, thanks for the good words of encouragement! I have to keep reminding myself that I do have the positives of working in neuroscience and I also work as an SLP(credential waiver) in Los Angeles. And yes, I applied to many in hopes of @ least one saying YES Thanks! -

I would say a lot of autistic people are VERY intelligent. I work at a neuroscience clinic with many autistic children, teens and adults. They may have their behavioral problems, but each of them are HIGHLY intelligent in their perspective interests. Currently there is a 7 year old I work with who can speak any language fluently just by reading that language! it's amazing! He also knows ALOT about cultures and geography! just 7 years old! So I would agree with you and say autistic people are VERY intelligent. And as for anxiety about getting accepted...... Let's be honsest... I am just hoping for some waitlists @ least! I know I am a looong shot with my GPA. Some waitlists would boost my confidence for spring apps if I don't get an acceptance. -
Well the thing is that you should be working as an SLPA or externing with an SLP the whole time so that gives you experience as you do all of the course work online.
