Okay, I take the bit about Vanderbilt back. I just got into UCSD.... I'm completely freaking out. 

If I don't get notified, I'm demanding my application fee back. That is just rude. I paid for a timely response. 

I'm an MA student at BGSU and I know all about the ACS department! If you have any questions, please let me know!

Does the American Culture program happen to be BGSU? Just wondering. 
 
I was also told by my thesis advisor/LOR writer, and most amazing prof ever that I should not get worried until February 20th. A colleague and I were discussing that date and couldn't tell if it was a total arbitrary number that she pulled out of her ass to calm me down or it actually held some validity. 
 
She also told me to stay off of GradCafe because it would only get me more amped up. It does, but I do love reading this thread and it's better to panic together than panic alone (or to panic at the disco). 

I was told not to venture here before hand. The entire internets is your kingdom, Simba. But what is that shadowy land? That is grad cafe. You must never go there. 

As a side note, I'm feeling an overwhelming urge to poke schools.  Several notified last year at the equivalent of last week.  Where are they this year... come on, people.  Grad students wanna know.
 
As for the scores, I think you're alright if your application is solid.  As much as you can, try not to worry.  I know it's ridiculously hard, but at this point, you can't change them.  So fretting only makes the anxiety worse.

Holy crap, guys. I had given up hope on OSU and then on a whim checked app status this evening and I was accepted!!! I haven't gotten an email or a phone call yet, so I don't know details, but I'm stoked. For anyone else still waiting to hear, I'm comp/rhet, so if you are too, check appstatus. So stoked!

I just got my rejection too. Tiny sliver of hope is dead .
 
I did get a funded MA offer from Delaware as well today though, which brightens my day!

That happened to me off and on all day yesterday. I kept saying (both aloud and to myself), "Quit playing GAMES with my heart".

Having been informed that I'm on the waitlist for my top choice program today, I decided to start this thread. We're in for a bumpy ride--as if waiting it out hadn't been stressful enough!
 
It's hard to tell which posts on the results page came from people who were accepted/rejected off the waitlist in previous years unless they've mentioned so in the comments section. Because of this, I decided to summarize the information found on the 2013 waitlist thread:

I guess my point of posting all of this is to show us all that there is hope. 18 of 28 posters who reported decisions on that thread got in off of the waitlist. Clearly we could have some reporting bias going on here, but nevertheless… This is pretty encouraging.

Besides making a mistake and thinking that I was still waiting for my MA degree...I'm in.
 
And yeah, I jabbered on about the weather (hey I'm in northern MN--our weather is actually conversation-worthy lately), and thanked him a thousand times.
 
I mostly got out of the "any questions?" thing because I was already running five minutes late for the class I was, you know, supposed to be teaching.  But I have an invite to call back/Email with any questions I think of.

I feel bad freaking out with excitement while most everyone is still in radio silence--I've been there, and it SUCKS!  But I hope everyone else gets good news soon.  I'm going to go cry in a corner now.

I just got an Email from the DGS at St. Louis University, telling me they are recommending me for admission.
 
I made the mistake of reading it while teaching, and had to leave the room; my hands were shaking too hard and I thought I was going to cry.
 
And...someone please tell me because I've gone mad and can't remember, if they're "recommending" me, does that mean that I could still get rejected by the grad school?  Do I still need to be scared? Should I be drowning my hopes and bracing myself?

My supervisor used the phrasing "less competitive" to describe those schools, which I think is fair. Even though your fit might be the same for Harvard and SmallState University, and both may have very good programs for your field, Harvard is likely going to be 'more competitive' in that they were probably get more applications than SSU and will also probably have better funding and support. It doesn't mean SSU isn't a good school and that you couldn't do good work there, it's just like shortstack said, you are statistically more likely to get in to SSU than Harvard, though you still might not get in to either. FUN!
