  1. So, I have to do my interview by Skype because of a schedule conflict, and I'm more nervous about the Skype interview than I would be about a regular one! It's 15 minutes with DGS and chair of the adcomm, then 15 minutes with a POI. Has anyone done Skype interviews that could give me some tips? First, I need to learn how to Skype... since I feel like a dinosaur with all of this newfangled technology, lol. But, other than that minor detail, any advice on what to expect or how to approach it?
  2. I second, third, whatever the question about your first choice. If I happen to actually get accepted to a few programs and am given a "choice", I will decide then! Until then, anyone who will take me, lol. Also, hubby is basing his ranking on where we can see our alma mater play the most football games. Luckily (or unluckily?), that happens to be at a top 5 program, lol.
  3. Hired gun
  4. hard hat
  5. People! Shhhh! This is supposed to be DISTRACTIONS from anxiety, not inducing more! Lol
  6. Since most of us are in for a bit of a wait still, thought I'd start a thread for some "distractions" from our obsessive email-checking. For example: http://attackofthecute.com/ Enjoy.
  7. I had the worst one yet, as far as how anxiety-inducing it was. Last night, I dreamed that I woke up and checked my email, and I had THREE acceptances! LOL. And, of course, all from my top choices. Then, I actually woke up, and I had to run and check my email juuuust to be sure. It was just all junk, of course!
  8. I would just like to point out that sociology is not a humanities field. That is all. Lol. Although, I must say that I do like this idea of creating a new thread as the "battlefield." Much better than posting it on legitimate threads. Plus, it provides endless entertainment to distract us from the present deafening silence of sociology adcomms...
  9. NYU was perhaps the worst interface I have ever seen. It gave me a headache every time I had to sign in to that garbled mess.
  10. I just got a call from "Unknown Number", and I didn't answer. They left a message. GASP. It was my doctor's office. Aaaaggghhh!
  11. Ok, econosocio, I'm sorry, but I have to chime in here. Someone has to, I suppose, or this is going to snowball further. It's one thing to pontificate on the "realities" of academic discourse and critical thought. It's quite another to hold yourself out as a victim of the perceived immaturity of this board, and then turn around and post a personal attack against someone who gave you a downvote. You say that you have been mislabeled as a bully by members of the board, but the personal attack you made on darthvegan makes you appear exactly that. You have probably been called condescending because you put forth all of these ideas about what the "academy" is or what "sociology" is - and you are entitled to your opinion - but you are no more qualified to do so than any others who frequent the forum. Just because you know what your experience has been does not make it the "truth." I attended a top 15 university, full of professors in the forefront of their field and intelligent, passionate students who appreciated a critical discourse. I often witnessed and was a part of heated academic discussions or critiques. Though, I would point out that I never once had professors laugh at students for their ideas, though they would point out the fallacies in their arguments and challenge them to defend them with sound reasoning. I also never saw a classmate bring out another's youtube feed as ammunition. And, before you say I was a mamby-pamby sociologist or something along those lines, I was not a sociology major - I was political science and history. I am not saying we all have to be friends and sit in a circle holding hands, singing Kumbaya. Though, I would hope we can tolerate each other to some extent since we will be colleagues in the future. What I am saying, however, is that we can engage in critical discourse on this board in a respectful way without personal attacks and condescension. I agree that things get boring if no one is challenging others to examine their beliefs and pointing out the fallacies in their arguments. I'm an attorney, so it is basically my job to criticize others' arguments and undermine their assumptions; criticism and confrontation don't faze me. The difference is, after a day in court arguing with my opponent, we can go out for a beer together. So, by all means, please continue to challenge others on this board to defend and question their positions; healthy academic discourse is greatly appreciated. But, stay away from the personal attacks, yeah? Now, in a perhaps futile attempt to guide this thread back on topic... Northwestern's Kellogg offers a PhD in Management and Organization and Sociology, which may be of interest to the original poster. http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/Programs/DoctoralProgram/Programs/ManagementOrganizationSociology.aspx
  12. Congrats! I also got invited for the Notre Dame visit, but it conflicts with another interview, so I'm doing it via Skype. But, I remembered reading about the interview a while back, so thought I'd pass along the thread: Also, search the Sociology forum, and you might be able to find more
  13. I used to have that dream a lot. Apparently, dream interpretation says it is BAD. Lol.
  14. Oh, yes. It actually makes me feel less anxious about getting rejected because the cost of living is SO HIGH in some of the places, lol. At least one positive will come from rejection at those awesome schools! Ha. I have even gotten to the point of looking at sub-lets for my husband in our current city in case our house sells early. And, I haven't even gotten an acceptance yet... I'm a masochist.
  15. My dream last night involved a ton of familiar places, none of which looked like they should, which was disconcerting. It also involved me escaping from Zombies (apparently, in my dreamland, Zombies cannot eat you when you are on concrete or when you shine light on them)... and also running from hyenas in my grandma's backyard. Not sure what it means for admissions... but, it was a good sign that I was still alive at the end of the dream!
  16. I have been educating myself on weird things... like Morgellons. Also, I read all of these 136 creepy Wikipedia articles: http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/805FfR/phocks.org/stumble/creepy/
  17. Really, I think it would largely be ignored, and it would probably be seen as unprofessional to have a high school student write a recommendation for you. I understand you wanting to highlight this achievement, but I think the proper place for it would be either in your statement of purpose or to have a professor mention it in his letter. The purpose of the letters of recommendation are to attest to your ability to succeed in a graduate program, and a high school student can't comment on that. Very cool accomplishment, though
  18. I, for one, am all for true interdisciplinary work... though, that may be apparent from my Sociology/Social Policy joint program apps, lol
  19. To be fair, I do not think the deterioration or hostility in this thread actually had anything to do with a discussion of the intersection of disciplines. The comments that were actually directed toward the OP's question were mostly helpful.
  20. I checked last year's Rice thread, and it said 17 people were at the interview. I know they look for a cohort of 5 or so.
  21. Ooooo, good idea. I know what my next Sims adventure will be... hehehe...
  22. So, I have now completed two seasons of my Australian Netflix find "Dance Academy".... and have masterminded and executed some pretty intricate and difficult plot twists in my Sims game. LOL. I once made all of the Harry Potter characters in Sims world... maybe I need to do that again... last time Voldemort caught his own house on fire and died. Whoops.
  23. I applied to the Sociology & Social Policy joint programs at Harvard and Princeton. Not sure if those would serve your interests - perhaps the Harvard one more than Princeton.
  24. My cat absolutely hates my mother and hisses at her every time she comes to visit. Not a very good "grand-cat"... hehehe.
  25. Ditto. LOL. I have a cat, can't she be happy with that bundle of joy?!
