    GPA statistics

Au contraire, the numbers look much better for them, ambiguous as they are now
  2. Allocation time on super computers are very very easy to get. Typically, it involves writing a short, easy proposal of a few pages. In my lab, although we already have our own (small) cluster, we still apply for more time! Whoever in the project writes the proposal and my PI submits. And we always get the hours we asked for (starting with 50,000 SU and up). I dont know anyone who couldnt get some.

    GPA statistics

There's much more statistics there than most programs! incredible!
  4. Regarding computer time, you can write a proposal and have your advisor apply for allocations on XSEDE or NERSC... They are free for research purposes. Are you sure you have to pay for computer time at your institution? Most schools dont charge research labs for that, although the queue system might give your calculations lower priority than those who contribute the hardwares.
  5. Dude, please chill! I know you are eager to start (that's great!) but you are an undergrad and helping you start a new project would be like the last thing in his list. This is grant writing season! Wait another week or two then shoot him another email.
  6. Im doing a PhD in US but I wonder the same thing!
  7. Typically, 3-year contract of <1,500 EUR/month.
  8. My paystub shows the extra 2K! Please dont worry )
  9. Yea, I guess because everything in grad school is pretty much ambiguous: no set schedule, very few hard deadlines, and everybody makes progress in their own term. I try to keep a positive mindset by setting concrete personal/professional goals. If today I achieve something towards those goals, I'm happy. There is no need to compare yourself with this fellowship winner, or that Crossfit girl
  10. I think of grad school as a very personal journey. I've seen so many people still acting like they are still in high school and spending too much time gossiping/bickering about others.
  11. Being annoyed by annoying behaviors is... annoying.
  12. My CO said the additional $2K will be added to my stipend check in one week. I'm very surprised you guys dont already know about it! Click on 'View Fellowship Status Details/Request Fellowship Status Change' in your account and you should see 34,000 under 'Stipend Used' for 2014.
  13. I posted a while ago that current fellows will indeed get 34K retroactively to this year. A few days ago, I got the "official email" from my CO: "As you may have heard, the NSF has increased the stipend for the GRFP to $34,000 per year. They have also announced that the increase is retroactive to the current year. If you are currently receiving your NSF stipend, then we will process an increase to add the $2000 to what remains of the spring stipend. If you are on reserve, then the increase will be effective when you start tenure." There you have it.
  14. It seems like a great idea! I will use it and provide feedback. Thanks!
  15. Dif Q is fundamental. You should take it, no doubt.
  16. NUS is well known in Asia, but USC is a more recognizable school in the US. Where do you want to work in the future? I dont know about ChemEng specifically, but finding a job in Asia is generally easier for those with good STEM degrees, mostly because getting a work visa in the US is very difficult unless you are highly skilled.
  17. GROW/USAID is great! You bring up a good point, timing for GROW is hard. I will plan this very early, I suppose. I'm a chemical theorist so I'm afraid they will think that I dont need to travel abroad to work, since I can collaborate through the Internet Thanks!
  18. Talysin, would you mind sharing some tips from your application last year? This year I didnt apply because I got a different gig in Germany, but definitely would love to get GROW next year. Thanks!
  19. Ron2d2, you can accept both. That is for sure. (Answer from my school's grants & fellowship office)
  20. C would be a big no-no. W is uncommon but I know people withdrew from required courses to avoid getting C. Have you talked to the professor teaching that course to see what kind of improvement you can make to boost it to a B? If that doesn't work, then talk to your advisor. In my program, there are very few courses to choose from every semester, so withdrawing from one might mean an extra semester of coursework.
  21. Dont ever pay for PhD in STEM fields. Go with the generous offer. The ranking difference is not that large, anyway.
  22. You can be bumped up. I personally know 2 HM awarded later the last 2 years. The chance is very slim, however. I heard that within the HM list theres even more ranking so that they get bumped up as some awardees decline this fellowship for DOE CSGF or other fellowships.
  23. I wrote a script and used it last year Another option is to use Page Monitor (Chrome app), since as soon as FastLane is up, the results come out!
