Gramo;

Did you have MA or MS degree before you applied to Cornell PhD?

I do not have a Masters, so I was accepted into the combined program. I basically file my 2nd year project as a Masters degree...so it's just a masters in passing.

Hi, I have a question. I received an email from a grad coordinator saying that they want to consider me for a doctoral fellowship. They didn't mention anything about being admitted, they just had me send in additional materials. Does this mean I've been accepted, or do you think my admission is contingent on whether I get the fellowship?

I'm not in communication, but I went through a similar situation. I checked the grad college's website about the fellowship and it listed an offer of admission from the department as one of the materials required for the dept to submit in order for the grad college to consider the fellowship application. It may vary by school, but it could mean you're in. At the very least you are a strong candidate, so congratulations!

The UIUC website says they strive to notify applicants by 3/1. I guess that means we'll be hearing at the latest around mid-March. I wonder if they do interviews..

this waiting period is making me very nervous. I feel like this time "no news" is "bad" news. It seems like the acceptances are announced right away. I am aging!

Yeah it's definitely the toughest part.

You shouldn't assume it means bad news, though! Out of 5 universities I received notification from only one (and I applied to different programs than you did). I don't think your departments notified anyone (except for UCSD, if I remember correctly). Just keep an eye on the results search...

I've applied to Columbia, Northwestern, NYU, and Missouri for an MS or MA (depending on school) in Journalism. I guess I'm shooting high, but I figured I'd be alright...I had a 3.77 at OSU and scored 1400+ on my GRE. I've felt pretty confident all along, but I'm doubting there's much chance for me to get funding. With the number of applicants going up this year, I have a feeling it's going to be more competitive than even a year or two ago. Yuck.

No words yet, though. I expect first word to start rolling in around Mar. 1. Here's hoping.

No, and I have never waited for March to come with such desire.

Since I received one decision, from UCSD (a rejection ), I have been very pessimistic. I am waiting from other 5.

I am suprised to see all the admission results, considering today is the Presidents Day.

Good Luck. I hope to hear your good news soon. And I hope to announce my good news soon

Woo hoo- a communication forum! I haven't heard from any schools yet (applied to 5) and figure most will send out notifications in March. Ugh! Waiting really sucks, especially seeing all of the rejections on the results page.

Congrats to everyone that has gotten good news already.

You are not alone! Waiting does suck and I am aging :)

I applied to 6, so far received a rejection from UCSD PhD, and anxiously waiting on the other 5 schools.

I spoke with one of the schools this morning and the Grad Asst told me that I was at the applicants pool. Does everyone make it to the applicants pool?

Good luck

I'm usually more of an English/Cultural Studies person, but I did apply to one program within a Comm department (Media Studies at Rutgers) and was just accepted. Has anyone else heard from them, or can tell me anything you've heard about the program?

@carlstreator:

have you heard anything yet? i applied to northwestern (where i did my undergrad), columbia, university of oregon and the literary reportage program at nyu ... the wait is killing me.

hey paperweight:

i'm actually in nyc right now visiting columbia and nyu...the admissions officer at columbia told me yesterday that word is going out earlier this year than normal; i was expecting to not hear back from them until mid- to late april, but she told me they're trying to let everyone know by march 22. that's a positive for us.

but otherwise...nope, i've not heard a thing yet. i expect to hear from northwestern first, even though it was the last app i turned in. strange. that should be around march 1, from all i gather. good luck to you.

Hello all,

I have no word on any of my applications. I keep on hearing about people checking their application status via a website, but I haven't found that to be an option with any of the application systems my schools used.

Looking to do applied research in new media-based journalism.

Apparently one person has heard back from Stanford Communications, and one person has heard back from MIT MAS for an interview. Columbia is probably running late because there were issues with their application system crashing and losing applicants' data. I was one of the unlucky ones.

Anyway, here's to hearing good news sooner than later.

ive just found this website and after reading these posts have let out a great sigh of relief. many of us are still at the edge of our seats and i suppose misery loves company!

i applied only to 2phd programs penn's annenburg school & nyu's media culture and communications program. i didnt get into upenn but im trying to be patient about nyu but i really havent heard a thing. do you suspect they wait to send out rejections after sending out acceptances and short-listers?! oh im so worried. anyone have any insight??

Hi veryeager.

I just did an analysis of the three schools I applied to (none of them NYU). One of them mails or emails everything on the same day. One does acceptances over the course of February, and then rejections over the second week of March, and then at the end of the second week of March sends out waitlists. Another, which isn't strictly a communications program, sends out the acceptances and waitlists at about the same time, and then a week later sends out the rejections.

So, there's no standard. If you really want to know about NYU, you'll have to search the results board to see when people got what kind of response.

Good luck!

I only heard back from UCSD back in January, which was a rejection. With CA budget issues, not a suprise but depressed the hell out of me.

I am still waiting to hear from the other 5. Cornell MS results will be announced next week. Pittsburgh second week of March (i think), Urbana-Champaign will announce starting March 1st. I am not sure about Amherst or UCSB.

I am very anxious. Very nervous.

All I need is ONE acceptance.

I did my MA at NYU's Department of Media, Culture, and Communication. I think admission to the MA is relatively open, but the PhD program is extremely selective. I heard it on the grapevine that they got 170 applications this year. What I know of the PhD admissions process at MCC: The department makes an initial round of offers, but they rarely get their top picks. They also have a waitlist (you'll be informed if you're on it), and they make additional offers as their top picks drop out of consideration. I do not know when or how they reject applicants.

EDIT: I'd like to add, to anyone considering NYU, that I highly recommend the department. Although I did not reapply, my reasons had nothing to do with the program's quality or collegiality.

As for me, I (and some of my MA cohort) am still waiting to hear from USC Annenberg. Fortunately, I've already received an extremely generous, five-year fully-funded offer from another PhD program with good reputation, so I'm not dying of worry. Anymore, that is.

Best of luck to everyone else on the forum!

thanks so much for the insight, sue - and congratulations on the generous funding offer! i have had some great experiences with nyu department when i visited last year. does anyone think that there would be any draw backs from graduating with an interdisciplinary degree such as a phd in media, culture and communications (nyu)? ive heard criticism that it is a less competitive degree upon entering the job market? i guess i could be jumping the gun as i havent heard from my top choices yet... good grief.
