Has anyone here applied to MS in Data Science at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities? I have and I haven't yet heard from them. I see that they have released some admits in batches already in this month. Does anyone know what the batch size of MSDS at UMN is?  Do we still have a hope?

I do have some information about UMN based on their recent Engineering graduate admission presentation. It says that admission results are most likely released b/t April - May, so don't worry about it.  Also, a total of 140 spots (not just for data science program) for Computer Science & Data Science MS.

It also states 320 GRE score to be competitive (V:154+, Q:166+). Hope this helps.

UMN has been giving out admits for MSDS from this month. But somebody was saying that the class size is only 40. And looking at the profiles of the admitted students, seems like GRE isn't given much importance. GPA and work experience seem to have played important roles. Just hoping there will be more admits rolling out.

The information I provided is not from my personal thoughts or guesses. I looked into their official info session presentation offered by the UMN computer science & engineering department. There is no need to guess what qualifications the program prioritizes.

I'm waiting for UMN (anxiously) too! Have they started sending out results? I know they've said April-May, but I hope it's not too far (for my own sanity).

In my Duke interview on 15th, they said I would definitely hear a decision by 31st. Is anyone else yet to hear back? Starting to get a little worried ?

They have started giving decisions for Data Science.  I don't know about other programs.

Are the classes at NYU Data science primarily offered at night? Do most students work during the day?

@Waiting2019 From the admitted students presentation on Monday: Many of the core DS classes are offered at night, between 5 PM and 9 PM. It sounds like this is due to 2 factors: (1) to enable part-time students to enroll in the core classes without missing work (though there aren't many part-time students), (2) to accommodate professors' schedules (some professors are also working at companies full-time)

Chiming in here because I just got a digital interview invitation from Columbia (today - 3/29).  I had been a bit discouraged having not received one earlier, but I guess all hope is not lost!  Instructions say to record your responses on video to questions that are more behavioral than technical.  It is due back on 3/31 at noon.

I'll also share my admission statuses so far and quick background:

Undergrad Institution: Brown University

Undergrad Major: Computer Science / Applied Math - Econ (double major)

GPA: 3.62 (3.72 in-major GPA, 4.0 CS GPA); transcript includes a few unfortunate blemishes in some math classes

GRE (V/Q/AW): 167/170/5.5

Other: almost 3 yrs work experience as a data scientist at advertising agency -- have worked on projects for some relatively reputable clients; undergrad TA for a data science course; no real research experience

Admitted:  NYU DS | Berkeley MEng CS (DS Concentration) | Duke MIDS | UMichigan DS | U Rochester DS | Colorado Boulder CS (DS Concentration) | Rice CS

Rejected:  None yet ?

Still Waiting:  Columbia DS | Cornell Tech CS | Cornell CS MEng (Ithaca) | USC Computer Science (DS Concentration)

I'm leaning towards NYU or Berkeley of the choices I have so far, but I'd also consider Columbia or the Cornell programs if I get in.

Good luck to everyone!

Hi there, I have also received an invitation from Columbia DS today :)  Congratulation for all your acceptances!

For me I'm currently choosing among NYU DS, Duke MIDS and CMU - BIDA (business intelligence & data analytics). I've got a scholarship from both Duke & CMU so cost won't be a concern.

I'm leaning towards Duke MIDS as the faculty is highly skilled & it's a two years program with flexible curriculum although it's a new program. still not toooo sure though :( Waiting for Columbia DS & UPenn MCIT program.

Congrats @Louise Yi?

My updates:

Accepted: NYU CDS, University of San Francisco, Tufts, Harvard School of Public Health, UC Berkeley MIDS

Rejected: Harvard SEAS, MIT Sloan MBAn

Pending: Columbia (one-way interview invite), Brown (completed interview)

Waiting to see how Columbia and Brown pan out, but need to come to a decision pretty soon.

Hi Louise!

You said here that you were placed in the WL for NYU DS. Have you already received an admission?

I am also in WL (NYU DS), but still waiting for the decision.  I thought they would start sending updates in the middle of April.

Thank you and congrats for your admissions!

@regressionist I don't know if this is helpful, but I have to accept or decline NYU by April 8. I would guess there will be movement on the waiting list after that date.

Yes, I also expect decisions about WL to start at the 15th - 20th of April.

The strange thing is that people with higher GPA and GRE were rejected (according to gradcafe), but I was placed to WL. So now I don’t know what to expect from the admission committee.

Hi All

Congratulations on some wonderful admits and best wishes to those on the wait-list, April is the month of a lot of movement!

I have an admit/awaiting decisions from following Data Science programs, please let me know your perspective on the following courses and how would they stack up when compared to each other:

  • Stanford M.S. Statistics: Data Science (Admitted)
  • NYU M.S. in Data Science (Admitted)
  • Carnegie Mellon University Master of Computational Data Science (Awaited)
  • Columbia M.S. in Data Science (Awaited/Interviewed on 31st March)

Your insights and suggestions are deeply appreciated!

Regards
Sarthak

I feel the same! By the way, did you send a letter of continued interest to the dept once you were waitlisted?

Hi Sarthak! Wow, congrats on your acceptances. Honestly, I think all of these programs are excellent, so it's hard to see how you could go wrong. You could ask the admissions departments to put you in touch with current students/alums to get a feel for each program and ask any specific questions you have.

@nick_brown16 I noticed that you went to Brown for your undergraduate studies -- did you enjoy it? I was accepted to the Brown Data Science program and am seriously considering it. Was there any particular reason you didn't apply for the Data Science Initiative at Brown?

Thanks in advance!

Hey @nyan_cat, I'm actually based in the West Coast, so unfortunately I wasn't able to make it out. What did you think?

@thrasher88 I thought that the info session was okay. Aside from the Deputy Director of the Program (who spoke for 20 minutes), there were no faculty members there. I guess the caliber of the coursework speaks for itself, so there isn't much of a need to "convince" prospective students to attend the program. In addition to other factors, I'm probably going to decline NYU because I don't have a strong enough theoretical math background.
