Asking for funding?

Has anyone ever had experience with asking for more funding? I was accepted to a school (vanderbilt) but was not offered anything. they are my top choice but I wouldn't be able to attend without any award. I do have funding offers from other programs. How do I ask/negotiate for funding? And if anyone attending Vanderbilt right now has negotiated for funding, how did you do it?

Second this; I have a few acceptances and would like to see what I may be able to do in regard to funding. Tuition is super expensive within our field and is sort of deterrent when determing which program to attend.

Ask for assistantships! Many schools give full or partial tuition waivers if you team up with a professor for research or work in the business office or something for 10-20 hr/ week. Some even offer a stipend along with it.
