American University SIS Fall 2020

I still haven't gotten any email that my portal has changed from "completed" either. What program did you apply to? I applied for the MA in Comparative and Regional Studies and the new Global CRS program they're launching for Europe. Maybe within the next few days/weeks something will change (for better or worse), but until then I'm doing my best to stay occupied from constantly refreshing my email and only making my anxiety worse

Is anyone else still waiting to hear back from AU regarding their MA application for Fall 2020? I know that some decisions are out so I checked my portal but it still says that the application is just "completed"

I was admitted for the MA, but the URL for my letter said "early admit," so I don't think all decisions are out yet. It's still pretty early, so I wouldn't worry too much.

I also applied to the Global CRS track for Europe/Eurasia! So yes, as someone else mentioned, it's still pretty early so we shouldn't get too worried haha. Good luck! :)

I received my admission to the MA in International Affairs Policy and Analysis last week, but as QP noted, the PDF of the admission letter says "Early Admit". So I wouldn't be too worried! I was really surprised to hear back so quickly.

I received my acceptance today! I am wait listed for the Global CRS portion, as they only accepted a cohort of 5 (congrats to them!), but accepted for the main CRS program! Now just waiting until early March to hear about funding. Wish you all the best!

Received my acceptance yesterday for the MA in Global Governance, Politics, and Security. I haven't had the chance to speak to any SIS alumni, and I'm trying to pick out what American's comparative advantages are over other schools...any thoughts anyone?

Also, has anyone visited for an open house? If so, how was your experience?

  • 3 weeks later...

Can anyone comment on the SIS advantages/disadvantages over other schools? How much "brand" power would I be losing if I went here over, say, SAIS?

I was offered a $15,000 assistantship/tuition remission per year at SIS, $12,500 per year at SAIS, and $13,000 per year at George Washington, so trying to weight my options. Given the cost of the programs it makes American much more reasonable. Any input would be really helpful!

For $2.5K difference... you should pick SAIS... This is a complete no brainer.

SAIS has, reputation, location, cohort, academics, alumni network, and probably lots of other things... over American.

The only reasons why I would hypothetically pick George Washington (I am assuming Elliot School), is if for some reason you really like international space policy or something related to public health international policy.

Honestly... I never rarely saw SIS students out in the DC international learning environment (I mean I saw them more than SPA students... but MSFS, SAIS, and Elliot school students were there when SIS was relatively absent),

If you have Georgetown MSFS, Fletcher MALD, HKS, Harris, Elliot, SAIS, SIPA,, Stanford and maybe a few others I'm forgetting, I would choose that over American unless you really really really need to be in Tenleytown or there is a drastic funding difference.

I have seen SIS people do great things (I used to manage the biography books for international relations related guest speakers at a certain IR research institution), but by far their students and alumni play second fiddle to people in the other schools.
