statenth Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 (edited) Hello, I'm an international applicant who is applying for 2021 Biostatistics and Statistics Ph.D. programs. Purdue's primary deadline was Dec. 1st and I got a direct rejection on that day. I think it's far better than being ghosted for a pretty long time, though, I'm curious whether such an early rejection is common or not. Edited December 7, 2020 by statenth
csheehan10 Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 I'm applying for statistics phd programmes at the moment too. Sorry to hear you got a rejection already! Given that it happened that quickly I would guess you just didn't hit their minimum requirements (e.g. GRE/GPA too low or something) and got rejected by the system automatically rather than have a professor read and reject you.
Coldboy Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 That's pretty uncommon. I haven't heard such a case. Perhaps you could email the admission department regarding the same, asking for such early reject and if that is a common occurence.

Sorry dude
trynagetby Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 It definitely seems odd, your profile doesn't seem close to an auto-reject.

I contacted the graduate coordinator and It seems like there has been a clerical error and my application for Fall 2021 was actually put with Spring 2021 applications. As you may know, US schools accept Ph.D. Applications for Fall terms only, and that was the reason I got direct rejection!!
statenth Posted December 8, 2020 Author Posted December 8, 2020 They say that their system does not allow reverting their decision and they tell me to reapply if I want to be considered for admission. It sounds like waste of time and money. What should I do??!
nęm0 Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 All up to you! if you think it's worth a shot, then do it!

If the program isn't willing to help and wants you to pay a second application fee because of a clerical error, I would take that as a very bad sign about the program and whether this is a place you would want to spend five years. I would be so upset that there is no way I'd reapply, but that is just my personal feeling. Purdue has some great professors, but they seem pretty unorganized and they've had some pretty rudely worded stuff on their website and rejection emails in the past that have left a bad taste in my mouth.
cyberwulf Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Offering to refund your application fee is the very least they can do if the mistake was their fault. If they're not willing to do that, that's atrocious.

Yes, there are couple of professors who I would very much like to work with. But the wording of FAQs on their website is at best rude and at worst f**k you to the applicants. I am still weighing my options with Purdue. Edited December 8, 2020 by frequentist
statenth Posted December 10, 2020 Author Posted December 10, 2020 (edited) Hey, I inquired them to explain what happened exactly, and this time they said that my application was fully reviewed by the committee and resulted in direct rejection. Honestly, I am not even sure if I am communicating with the same person. What in the hell is the matter with their system? Are they able to communicate with each other? How such a thing can happen in a school like Purdue?? They seem so indifferent about what applicants would experience in the admission process. Edited December 10, 2020 by statenth

It is so disappointing to discover how some places handle admissions - I had one experience in particular it is still hard to believe happened. All you can do is move on and be happy you dodged a bullet and don't have to spend five years in a disorganized, toxic place. statenth 1
