It will definitely take away from your creative work. In my experience, that work will be relegated to the breaks (summer, winter, etc). So if your creative work is your top priority, I’d prioritize programs that allow you to work on it. Have you heard from any of the programs with creative dissertations?

No, this Lit PhD offer is the only program I've heard back from. I'm assuming a few of the creative dissertation programs have already sent out offers, though.

Not yet ?

Looking further into the email, I came to the conclusion this is not indicative of anything. There was a link for exploring previous open houses, and it seems to be an open forum about applying and determining if the school is a good fit. I feel that this is actually more negative than it is reassuring since they’re basically wanting me to attend an event about applying again ??

CUNY decisions out? Safe to assume a rejection? Some programmes are really before their usual time this season!

I just saw this too! I applied last year and never heard back (had to email). Found out that I was supposed to be on the waitlist but due to COVID, my specialty was given one spot. When that spot was filled, they said they had no choice but to close my application. I was complimented and told that they were deeply impressed—essentially, I was a top candidate for whom there was no room. Knowing this, I applied again this year, hoping that they would see my application and remember me—but I’ve also heard nothing despite being complimented a year prior. If I am rejected, I hope this speaks to how arbitrary this process truly is. Keep your head up!

Yes, covid disrupted everything! And the last application season didn't have any regard for decent odds against applicants--feasting on rejections! Many wonderful applicants had to reapply this year. But I had applied for fall 2020, long before covid started making rounds and still ended up being waitlisted. Little scope for optimism ugh! Good luck to you though! What's your specialisation?

A weird interdisciplinary mix of performance studies, philosophy, and gender studies. (This weird mix probably makes me the bane of every committee’s existence ?). I mostly work with early modern literature. Yourself?

Just got an email from a POI at UN Reno congratulating me on my acceptance and opening the floor for any questions I have. Anyone have input about good questions to ask? I don't really have anything specific I need to know at this stage, but I want to make a positive impression in case I end up accepting UNR's offer.

Anyone else get an email about a graduate open house from Northeastern? (I’m the one who posted it to the forum). The email says that the event will have students, alumni, faculty, and admissions representative. It also said that the event would “show you what it’s like to be a Northeastern student.” I figured this was a generic notification since the date was late April, and I also didn’t get an interview invite. Did others get this?

Totally different department/field, but I also got that email this morning. Was it a save the date for April 26th to 27th?

Yup! After looking into the link, I assume that it doesn’t mean anything. It seems like an open forum about applications, fit, etc. What do you think?

Congrats!! I do have some experience with this (was accepted to a program last year but couldn’t attend due to personal reasons). One of my former professors told me that they do expect you to have questions. I asked about my potential teaching load (since I was offered a TAship—wanted to know how extensive their writing program was), and if there were any student groups that they were aware of for my speciality. If this applies to you: I also had an MA and asked about transferring credits (I.e., does it matter which courses I transfer? If I transfer this one, does it mean I shouldn’t take a class like that while here? Etc.) Good luck!

Edit: I feel inclined to say that my meeting was with the DGS and not a POI, so I’m not sure if these questions are best for a POI.

No idea, but that sounds right. Didn't get an interview and mine's a super small program so I'm not expecting admission. But, supposedly, an open house invite (which I would assume is a different, department-specific open house invite) for some Northeastern departments means you've been shortlisted. The only weird thing is that I can't find an open house scheduled for those dates posted online anywhere, which I would normally expect for a generic open-invite open house like this -- but I guess that's the point of sending out a save the date so far in advance...?

Just curious why some people got it and others didn't. Wonder what flags they plugged into to decide who to send the emails to, lol.

I also wonder why some received it and others did not. Maybe those who attended an event in the past didn’t get it? It also could’ve went to some spam folders since it had a link? However, they did say that they had the same event in the fall and that one seemed like a recruitment event for prospective students (I watched the first minute or so of the first video and the woman said something along the lines of thank you all for coming and for looking into our programs, which, to me, suggested that it was a general event before applying). Also, for English, there were people who received virtual event invites that promised interviews. Are you referring to that? If anything, you can email the dept to which you applied and say that you received a message and want to know if it’s general or specific to the department. I’m considering doing that, but I’m not so sure.

Comics mostly! So you can guess how much I fit in -_- given there is only person in the whole department who does that!

Anyone else hear anything from NYU? I saw an interview on the board but nothing else. Are they interviewing all short list applicants?

From what they mentioned in their open house, yes. NYU said they would be interviewing all their short list applicants. They said the interview stage this season is a new addition to their admissions process. I’ve only seen two interview posts so far, so I’m hoping there are more requests to come...!! Nevertheless, I’m sure not everyone is posting their results on Gradcafe, so they actually might have finished sending them out... who knows! Fingers crossed for both of us!?

I saw that someone posted that they were accepted to Texas Tech with $20k funding for four years and are turning it down. I was so shocked that I accidentally sat on my glasses. I was mostly able to bend them back into shape, but holy cow. Lord grant me the serenity to be a total badass like that someday.

Can't add more likes but this is hilarious! How tragedy is often so comical!

Anyone yet to hear from a any programme? I haven't heard back from any and at this point a couple of rejections would be more reassuring than this silence! Also, the general drift seems to be something like this: if you have an acceptance already, you are more likely to receive more acceptances because of course your application is very impressive. But, and here's the catch or the counter-drift: this relation seems a lot murkier for rejections and silences. One rejection might imply more rejections but there is so little in the way of certainty and silences don't yield any relations at all! Whoever said silence is god! Well, so true! So devoid of meanings and relations -_-

P.S.: Being an Asian from Asia and doing literature in spite of that, my self-esteem is as diffuse as the air--rejections are always on my mind but grad school is an exercise in nihilism especially if you are not in the sciences. lol.

Oh no, I haven't gotten an interview request from NYU yet... Hope they are still sending them out. I submitted my application super close to the deadline, maybe that is affecting it?

On that note, does anyone know what the CUNY situation is? I saw some people heard back. Again, hope this isn't a rejection.

As a fellow Asian from Asia, I concur! But don't lose hope. I have one acceptance in hand and I'm sure you will too. It's rough waiting to hear back, especially knowing you're at a disadvantage re: funding and more generally too.

Hi!!! I applied for Comparative Literature and can feel my brain melting away from the anxiety. I saw some CUNY results on the board, one acceptance via email for English and one interview for Comp Lit, and would love to talk to the posters if they happen to be around here! I am also very surprised to see results this early in the cycle.

ANYWAYS, back to pulling my hair out.

Glad to hear more anxious voices! Can't add more reacts but decisions are happening so early this cycle that my heart never stops fluttering because all I have is silence. I thought most of my programmes would wait until next week to do their numbers (for the ones rejected) at least, but CUNY's decision yesterday, oh god! Seems like they are sending out early acceptances to find a way to waitlist people because they have no more funded spots left (Ahhhhh!)

Anyone (sans paranoia) with any insight into this earliness?

Can confirm after reaching out that it is a form email. I was told (for my program) that they are still very much reviewing applications and hope to have results in the next few weeks.

I wonder why some programs have so few acceptances. Do people think that there are less folks on the results page this year because that forum now requires an email to submit? This wasn’t required last year (and I assume years before that). Those without an account might feel hesitant to give their email to this site. Thoughts?

@plainblacktightsHi there, I'm the CUNY English acceptee on the board. Yesterday I received an informal email from my POI at CUNY and they said that I'll receive officlal letters of acceptance and funding information in the coming days. My subfield is postcolonial studies, if that's helpful. To be honest, I didn't expect to hear from them this early; I think historically they release results around mid-February, so don't give up hope just yet! I know nothing about their complit program though. Fingers crossed for you!
