I heard that they get about 80ish apps and ask a couple dozen people to interview. Don't know if that's just for masters or all applicants.

Does anyone, by any chance at all, know about how many apps IU typically gets yearly for their musicology PhD?

I go to IU-- a prof told me that this year they got ~ 70 applications total (for both the MA and PhD program). I know that the admcom will occasionally admit PhD applicants to the MA if they feel that the applicants have potential but may need more background knowledge before specializing in the doctorate...

Cool. Thanks so much. I am really interested in IU and I'll most likely apply next year mid-MPhil ...

Got a rejection from UPenn today. Bang! Thanks to this thread, I was prepared for the result, so it doesn't sting as much as it could have.

RE: Brandeis

Music composition decisions have gone out, and the final meeting to make a decision on musicology will be held on Thursday; those who applied should be hearing soon after that.

Good luck everyone!

Is there anyone else who hasn't heard anything from BU? I mean, at this point I'm assuming I didn't get in, but I sure would like to hear a real answer. Same goes for UPenn.

I got a call from BU with an accept on Feb 14.

Right there with the fellow Penn rejects. :( It was my top choice. Not to mention the fact I already live so close I could bike there!! Super bummed.

Can't believe I only found this site today. UGH.

I made it to the final round for ethno, an on campus interview, on February 3rd. It was me and one one other candidate, and he just blew me out of the water. I knew when I left that it wasn't happening. I definitely made some mistakes (this was my first on-campus interview), and I wish I could have practiced on another school before going to Penn, but as you said diber, c'est la vie. I'm still in undergrad and the other guy was a little further along in the process, so it seems fair. Of course, Penn was one of my top choices, so I was incredibly bummed when I finally got the email. But, true to form, the email Tim Rommen sent was absolutely lovely, very encouraging. There are a couple programs where I firmly believe that if you have the chops to get in there, I think you would have to be on crack not to go. This is definitely one of them.

I've also gotten into UC Davis (I couldn't make the big weekend visit, or else I'd be there now. I'm really bummed, my prof wouldn't move my midterm today, so I think my funding opportunities are pretty much defunct with them), as well as BU and UMich Ann Arbor, all for musicology/ethno. I plan to go to Mich's accepted students weekend, and I'm going to wait and see what BU can give me funding wise...

Still waiting desparately to hear from Columbia, NYU, and Harvard. Any news from them??????

TOTALLY!!! Penn is such a dreamy program. Everyone is so nice!!! I had a lot of contact with Tim, and he said I was *just* short of waitlist. Which in the end, doesn't really help. But he is so nice about it.

Yea, I'm worried about BU's funding situation, too. I'm going up there next week hopefully to check it out in person.

I'm still waiting from Columbia and Harvard, too. But, I think at this point, if their peer institution (Penn) has already made its decision, I'm just assuming rejections. TBH, I didn't think they totally fit me and my subfield anyway.

Just checked the results board. Saw some Columbia accepts/waitlists last week. Soooo, guess that would be no cigar....

Nice! Who are you interested in working with?

There are a few people there in my field -- Massimo Ossi, Kristina Muxfeldt, and Daniel Melamed. It seems like a terrific department and is definitely high on my list.

Yep, I just got the rejection from Penn too.

I just got a waitlist email from NYU GSAS (I applied to Ethno, but they didn't mention that in the email). I've been crying with joy for the last ten minutes about it because my dream was to be at least waitlisted somewhere!

I don't know what this means about any other type of notification for GSAS.

Edited to add: This email came at 1:00 am EST. :P

Edited also to add: I haven't heard from Harvard either. I'm sensing rejection there.

Just found this forum, I got my acceptance from McGill last month but they still haven't gotten back to me on funding... I had to resend my transcripts because my marks from first term weren't available the first time I sent them.... Also, anyone apply to Dalhousie's new musicology masters program?? McGill is my number one choice so I was obviously thrilled to get in, but obviously the more money they offer the better. What are people's fields of interest?

Hi Joel, do you know if they are accepting by snail-mail, or just shooting e-mails to accepted candidates?

Thanks

Actually, I just happened to call Mark Kagan (grad dept coordinator) the day after they'd made their decision; I received my package through snail mail about 5-6 days later.

Dreams are cruel.

It was pretty clear to me that since I haven't heard from Harvard, I've been rejected, as it seems the good news went out around Feb. 20 and the bad news is coming in now via post.

I had an Inception dream within a dream last night in which I was accepted to Harvard in dream level 1, had a 2nd-level dream about getting accepted into Harvard in level 2 too, and woke up to my level 1 dream incredulous (because of the above reasons) but then ecstatic that yes, it was true.

Then I REALLY woke up and now I hate my brain.

Hehe, seems like you were in a dream, inside the dream, inside the matrix!

Well, how about you incept Harvard's Dean, and fill him/her with self doubt weather the right people were accepted?

Got my Harvard rejection letter today!

I asked Brown about the timeline since it seems that in past years, everybody knew their decision (positive or not) in February. The music dept. director responded that they have sent their decisions to the dean of grad. studies, but they're not allowed to contact applicants until the dean gives the thumbs up, and that should be any day now.

I can't decide if this means that yeah, they really haven't contacted anybody yet, or they HAVE contacted successful applicants in an "unofficial" way but they can't tell me that.

For what it's worth, to keep your sanity, I'd say just don't worry about it until you hear something official instead of speculating. I've been trying to tell myself that the past few days about a fellowship I'm waiting to hear about... I've applied for it a grand total of four times sad.gif

Hi, fellow McGill bound musicologist here! I just received a Mcgill funding offer in the form of an RA position a few days ago. I'm told If I do well with it, I'll get more opportunities, but nothing past my first two years is promised. I think the professors are still picking their future RA/TA students. When I visited the school last summer, I did hear that it was tricky for Americans to get funding. Our first year is the most expensive, but, luckily, we pay what Quebec students pay after the first 2 years...which isn't too bad...Yay living off ramen!

I hope I helped, good luck! Hopefully they will send you something.

Thanks for the info! Are you going for your PhD or Masters? I'm going for the course-based masters option. I'm thinking that perhaps they're more generous with funding when it comes to the PhD candidates... i'll apply for a TA position at least. I'm already a canadian citizen but of Ontario, so I dont' think I'll be paying Quebec tuition either. What are you planning on researching?

I'm going for my masters (thesis) and my PhD. I'm researching a few different things: Music of the Holocaust, Slavonic music, and folklore/folk music in relation to early music and romantic music. In a very roundabout way, these do all relate...I swear.

What is your specialization?
