JerusalemTeacher Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Hi JT, According to admissions that information will be out by the end of the month. It is nearly impossible to decide whether to accept the offer of admission (in comparison with other schools) without knowing the finances. I wonder if that info actually comes earlier, just like the admissions decision.
PTapEdM Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Hi JT, Last year I got my financial aid award letter on March 26, I believe. However, I was notified earlier via email about a restricted scholarship that I received. They also let you know if you have been awarded a Leadership in Education scholarship usually by mid March. Hope that helps! Patrick

TheDude Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Any idea on how many of the Leadership in Education scholarships they give out and the profile of awardees? I received a call from HGSE last night and was told the financial aid package will be available in 3 weeks.
rhianita Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 I received a call from HGSE last night and was told the financial aid package will be available in 3 weeks. I am so nervous because if I do not get a significant amount of aid, I am pretty sure i will not be able to attend. I hope we hear sooner rather than later.
sja Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 anyone heard funding info re. masters programs at HGSE?
Carolina2008 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 anyone heard funding info re. masters programs at HGSE? I called the financial aid office friday, but all they would say was I should receive something by the end of the month. I am getting a little nervous I really need to win one of the scholarships I applied for.
Carolina2008 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 FYI I received my aid award today. I'm assuming they all went out at the same time, but since I live on the outskirts of Boston I probably received mine earlier than most.

Especially with U.Penn's timeline, this is going to come at a critical time. Everything is happening . . .and soon!
hopingforgradschool Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Carolina, how did your package turn out? Is it mostly loans? How much in grants? I can't wait to receive this info...hopefully later today or tomorrow.
Carolina2008 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 It was okay, but not as much as I had hoped. I will clearly have to work some to make up the difference. As of this point my best aid offer is from UPenn, but I'm going to try to see if I can make it work at Harvard. Most of it was loans. There is a max on how much need based grant money you can get, which is somewhere in the vicinity of $12k. So anything more than that is either scholarships, work study, or loans. One advantage is it appears that not all decisions on restricted scholarships have been made, so there is still the possibility of getting more before the April 15th deadline. That is if you qualified for any of those. I noticed your other post on whether $60k in loans is too much. There is a cap on how much stafford and perkins loan money you can get a year, which is only about half of the total cost of a single year at Harvard. So anything more has to be private or graduate plus loans. If you are not opposed to working some though, you can make up the difference. Boston is expensive, but that also typically means higher part-time salaries. For instance, I just interviewed for a part-time job last week that paid $18-22 an hour. The only thing is working can be rough if you are trying to do a one year Masters. In my case I've already done this once. It is intense and not fun, but it is doable up to 20 hours a week. I suppose it all comes down to just how bad you want to go to Harvard. In my case this program is a particularly good fit for my goals, so it is my first priority. Good luck to those still waiting! hopingforgradschool Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Thanks for the reply. I still haven't gotten my package yet but I have a feeling it will come tomorrow. It sucks that only half of the loans can be federal loans...this must mean the rest won't qualify for the federal government's loan forgiveness program? Well I can't wait to get my info in the mail so I can finally make a decision with everything before me. Good luck to all.
at249 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Hey Everyone! Congrats on Harvard! I have been accepted to the Ed.M program in Education Policy & Management. So excited and anxiously awaiting my package. Is anyone attending Open House this weekend? If so, any advice on what to wear? I was going to go with "smart casual" (nice jeans, button up shirt and cardigan...no sneakers) Do you think that's okay, or should I dress more business? I want to be comfortable since I will be traveling and doing lots of moving around. Thoughts?
sophiemouse Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 (edited) Somewhere at the beginning of this thread, there was a discussion about the Leadership in Education Award. For anyone reading this for next year, it is my understanding that there are only approximately 13 (less or more) awarded altogether, about one for each program, but not necessarily one in each program. So don't feel bad if you don't get it, it's really competitive....and know that if you did, you were a leading candidate not only in your program concentration, but across the school of education.... PS....there are other merit awards they don't advertise and by and large, Harvard gives much more need based aid than merit aid per their philosophy.... Edited April 2, 2011 by sophiemouse
Coloradogirl Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 I am a future applicant to HGSE Higher Education Masters Program. Of those of you admitted I'm curious to know your stats to get a better idea of if I have a chance. Congrats to all of you!
michigan girl Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 For those who applied for the Special Studies Program, how did you draft your personal statement? While this program offers more flexibility, I feel as though I will need to make a case for why this program is best for my academic and professional needs. caraemcd 1

bluebunny Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Does anyone know how likely deferrals are for HGSE? According to this link: "you may petition the Admissions Committee in writing for a one-year deferment. Please note that deferments are rarely granted and are subject to the Admission Committee's approval."
FreedomInEducation Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Does anyone know how likely deferrals are for HGSE? I requested a deferral last year for economic hardship reasons. They rejected my request.
sententias Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Thanks IM_Blue and Freedom!! I appreciate your help... I figured it would be a long shot Will have to ponder this. Congrats on admits! Sarah I do not. Has anyone heard anything regarding financial aid etc.? sententias 1
