TC3 Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 This is just strange isn't it? The one, lone website acceptance posted *a month ago* and *nothing* since then?
ecg1810 Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 (edited) This is just strange isn't it? The one, lone website acceptance posted *a month ago* and *nothing* since then? Agreed. I've started to wonder if all hypothetical rejectees/acceptees thus far aren't on GC--but that seems highly unlikely. I really thought Iowa would notify last week. Edited March 6, 2011 by ecg1810
TC3 Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Agreed. I started to wonder if all hypothetical rejectees/acceptees thus far aren't on GC--but that seemed highly unlikely. I really thought Iowa would notify last week. There always are outliers, but this is ridiculous. For prestigious programs like Iowa, there always is at least a sizable chunk of the accepted cohort that uses GradCafe. More than one person, that's for sure!
byronlover Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Hey guys, I talked to the secretary on the phone on Friday and it sounds like things are kind of a mess. I've still not heard back from the DGS. I was notified early because I was nominated for a fellowship (which I didn't get). There's no visiting weekend and they won't be reimbursing any visit-related expenses. Funding also appears to be up in the air still. I'll let you know if/when I hear anything further. Good luck to all!

I wonder what led to all of the extra chaos this year. . .
TC3 Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Did anyone else think that the writing sample stipulations were weird? Ideally, they wanted us to submit the *original* first draft from a seminar *with* the original professor's comments. For me, this would have meant that I would have been evaluated based on my writing skills from 2007, and not my current skills.

For me, this would have meant that I would have been evaluated based on my writing skills from 2007, and not my current skills. I found this strange, too--especially since many of us crafted new-and-improved grad school writing samples post-graduatation in order to demonstrate intellectual growth, maturity, evolving academic interests, etc. (As you indicate, TC3.) Besides, many of my profs just assigned a letter grade to my papers with a one-word comment at the end--no extensive marginalia.

Besides, many of my profs just assigned a letter grade to my papers with a one-word comment at the end--no extensive marginalia. Early on (September, I think), I contacted Iowa's graduate director because I literally would be unable to provide the original draft with instructor comments (it was years ago, and most likely lost in a move). The director was ambiguous about whether or not that would be viewed unfavorably by the admissions committee. I just sent the revised version with an explanation on the cover sheet. I mean, when I've revised the paper into a now-published article, I'm going to send my best work.

ecg1810 Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 I sent a sample with no comments whatsoever and got in.. so clearly it doesn't matter! Thanks again for all of the inside info, byronlover. I have to say I don't understand the "no visiting day" routine though--it doesn't seem like a great finanical burden. Ah well. What do I know, eh?

The state's in a huge budget crisis and our new (old) governor is keen to strip anything he can from the public universities, so it's not surprising.

That stinks. I didn't mean to sound snarky in my post, BTW--just posing a general query to the Universe.
Awin Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 That stinks. I didn't mean to sound snarky in my post, BTW--just posing a general query to the Universe. Oh, no, I didn't think you were snarky! I apologize if I sounded terse, I'm coming off a 7p-7a shift plus class from 830-1120, so at this point I'm running on fumes!

Seeing my comment quoted prompted me to reread it, and I thought I might have potentially come off the wrong way. Just clarifying, is all!

So THIS might sound snarky, but WHEN IS IOWA GOING TO NOTIFY?!?! I am not expecting to get in, but have somehow managed to keep a glimmer of a hope, and I just want to know!!! ecg1810 1

tweed Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 (edited) There was a rejection posted today on the results page for the masters program. My ISIS status still lists "In Progress", should I assume Iowa makes decisions in batches? Edited March 9, 2011 by tweed
TC3 Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 There was a rejection posted today on the results page for the masters program. My ISIS status still lists "In Progress", should I assume Iowa makes decisions in batches? I'm doubtful about the post. I don't see how someone could have "multiple publications" after just a BA.
lyonessrampant Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Depends on what you consider publications. I've been solicited by some press that prints your stuff. They don't have a peer-review process. You don't have to pay for the publication, and, theoretically, you get a percentage for each book sold. I think this press makes most of its money off you and your family buying copies of the published books/articles. Needless to say, I declined the invitation. Anyway, there are quite a few publication options if you don't care about passing the peer-review process. Some people think (mistakenly I'd argue) that simply being published gives them an advantage. This isn't really true if the publisher isn't respectable. Just being published doesn't make one a good writer. That's why there are lots of people accepted to top 10ish programs who never have any publications. Their writing sample speaks to their potential/skill, not lines on a CV citing publications that the ad comm probably hasn't seen/read. . .
Awin Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I sort of wonder if the person who posted those results meant to indicate Iowa State rather than UIowa.
