limelight Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 (edited) I thought one of them was a phone call... Two by phone, one by email!! ahh! good luck! Edited February 20, 2011 by limelight
twobert Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Two by phone, one by email!! ahh! good luck! I'm one of the people who got a call. It was from the chair. She was extremely kind and the funding offer is outrageously generous. This was only one of two schools I applied to, and I was rejected from the other. This is just completely amazing to me. Good luck to everyone else! wanderlust07, the giaour and soxpuppet 3

I'm surprised that they called people on a Sunday-- interesting...
limelight Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 guys, i just took an above-ground subway line rather than the one i usually take so i could grip my phone and anxiously stare at it in hope of getting a call. and then when i had to transfer to the 6 i was reminded what crap the mta is and i totally forgot about rutgers for like ten minutes. remember, if it's the same as it was in previous years, they do have a waitlist. againstourfaces 1
Raputa Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I got a call today as well--totally shocked! Congratulations to everyone else! Anyone going to the visit day March 22? soxpuppet 1
againstourfaces Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I got a call today as well--totally shocked! Congratulations to everyone else! Anyone going to the visit day March 22? Do you mind telling us what other school you were accepted to and what your stats were? I would normally *never* ask this but I'm starting to think stats actually do matter a bit (mine are horrible).

I would normally *never* ask this but I'm starting to think stats actually do matter a bit (mine are horrible). I'm also wondering specializations...I'm an 18C specialist and was wondering if it seems they're taking more modernists (etc) or what at my various programs.

I totally know what you mean. Everyone seems to be American/Modernists. I haven't seen anything pre-19th century. I'm Renaissance.

I would normally *never* ask this but I'm starting to think stats actually do matter a bit (mine are horrible). I know you didn't ask me, but my stats weren't very good, either. I am fairly sure I got in entirely based on the strength of my writing sample, my SOP, and my LORs. My specialization is African American lit.

dulcinea Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Congrats! lyoness--this is totally random, but I see you have a Harvard rejection. Did you receive an actual rejection from them or is this an implied one? I know this has nothing to do with this post, but I just thought this was easiest.
lyonessrampant Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 It's implied. Based on past results, they nofity rejections via snail mail. . .so it will take some time coming. However, I'm ripping the bandaid off quickly, so to speak, and resolving myself to accept that I will not get into a top 10 school. C'est la vie. . .

I've done the same with them, but there are a couple of other schools that people seem to have official rejections from while I have heard nothing at all. Probably just means I'm alphabetically further along . Thought I'd check and see if this was the case with the big H. Hope you're faring well otherwise!
lyonessrampant Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Doing okay, Dulcinea, thanks for asking. At least I know for sure I'm going to start my Ph.D. (finally! . . .long story but it's been a few years coming). Good luck with your outstanding applications!
Tybalt Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I totally know what you mean. Everyone seems to be American/Modernists. I haven't seen anything pre-19th century. I'm Renaissance. I'm Renaissance as well. I've been surprised at how many American/Modernists have been getting admits. I thought those were the tougher fields to get jobs in. I also wonder if early-modern/medieval is taking a hit with (from my perception at least) a sizeable wave of retirements this year. At any rate, a big congrats to everyone who got into Rutgers! I'd have loved to go there, but it was always a "shoot for the moon" app for me.
againstourfaces Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Againstourfaces, I don't mind sharing: I also got in to UofM and am on the wait-list for SUNY Buffalo. I have a 3.98gpa, 98th verbal/10th quant (yes, TENTH percentile HA! I am serious!), a crappy 4.5 AW (so weird), an 84th in the subject test and I'm coming out of a state U--nowhere fancy. My area is C18. I know lit programs really don't look at math (whew!) & I really don't know how much that subject test really matters--I really do think it is about fit with the program. Hope this helps--good luck! I'm trying to decide where to go now--it's harder than I thought it would be, and I'm still waiting on 5 places. haha. No worries. I am in the 8th percentile for math. I was told it didn't matter so I didn't even read the questions: I just pressed random buttons. I actually didn't take the GRE seriously at all, which I am totally regretting. I think it may be due to the fact that I'm not American, so the idea of standardized tests doesn't really register with me. If I don't get in anywhere, I will actually study and try again. Anyway, congrats. I had all my hope set on Rutgers. I'm really frustrated because I don't feel like I *fit* any program, but Rutgers was the closest.

No joke-- The first time I took the GRE, I REALLY prepped for the math section. I hadn't taken a math course in nearly a decade, and I wasn't very good at it back then, either. I bombed it. The second time I took the GRE, I figured, "screw it--The math section will never go well anyway, so I'll just focus entirely on the verbal." I did just that. I didn't even waste brain power on the math part. I guessed randomly, and spent all of my energy on the verbal. It worked. My verbal score went up by 90 points. The frightening part is that my math score went up by 40 points.
BillyPilgrim Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 (edited) I thought I was a perfect fit for Rutgers. Anyone else seem to feel that no matter how great your fit, your SOP and your writing sample, sometimes the dice just aren't rolled in your favor. With these schools accepting 5% of applicants it almost seems like winning the lottery. Either that or my SoP and writing sample (which I worked heavily on and had other people read and comment and say they were good) really are just missing something, that elusive something that some students have and some don't. Anyways, congrats to all the admits. Rutgers is an English PhD student's wet dream. Enjoy it for the rest of us! Edited February 21, 2011 by BillyPilgrim

I think that it's just that, they get so many apps, they probably had 50 or so applicants that were perfect fits. But they have to make cuts somewhere and I think it's mostly random/subjective. The waitlisted haven't been notified yet, so there's always hope for that. I'd be thrilled to be waitlisted, even if I don't get in, just so my existence is validated
apieceofroastbeef Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I really hope they notify their rejected and waitlisted applicants soon! No change in status on the website...
woolfie Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Looks like they've started contacting waitlisted applicants. Anyone know how Rutgers does it, whether the list will be short/long, etc?
Lemonade Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Looks like they've started contacting waitlisted applicants. Anyone know how Rutgers does it, whether the list will be short/long, etc? I just got waitlisted. Apparently the list is pretty short -- 11 people -- and they've accepted 28 people for 15 spots. Also, (and I know this is tacky but...) can anyone who got accepted tell me what the funding package looks like?

You get at least one year of fellowships, and possibly a second year.
abookbumble Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I also just got wait-listed by phone this afternoon. I'd thought it was all over a week ago, but I guess they're still contacting people.
