Hey all!

I was just wondering what everyone plans on researching for their potential thesis/dissertation?

I will be attending the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography under Dr. Steven Carey and I will most likely be working on his project concerning the tsunami risk hazard in the Mediterranean Sea associated with Marsili volcano.

Just curious what you all plan on studying!

Something involving biology, geology and chemistry. I'll get back to you in a year or so.

ahhh biogeochemist...jack of all trades

master of all! :D (wishful thinking, but the job market for biogeochemists is pretty rough)

Shhhh....don't make me lose hope until I get some publications!!

I'll be attending Colorado School of Mines and studying Geological Engineering. I still have to make up some prereq's, so I'm not sure on my thesis yet.

I'm hoping to get in for paleonology/ geobiology/ biostratigraphy. Like waddle, I'll let you know, I'm applying this fall.

Cool, I'm not the only astrobio person hanging around here this cycle!

Geobio/astrobio/extremophiles

But I haven't even decided where I'll be going yet, so thesis topics are still a long ways out.

RedPanda, I call myself a wannabe astrobiologist, and my best friend here at grad school is one (funded by NASA). Where did you apply?

LCBucky: nice to see another oceanographer on board (yes, pun intended). Have you ever been to sea before? I <3 research cruises.

And to both of you: Welcome to the earth sciences club here at Grad Cafe!

Well, I applied to geoscience departments at Penn State, Indiana, and Colorado; microbiology at Cornell; and marine bio at UCSD/Scripps (for deep sea microbiology research). So far I've been accepted to Penn State (yay!) and I've heard unofficial good things from the adcom at Cornell. I'm completely psyched for next year but the suspense is driving me batty!

Thanks for the welcome! B)

UnlikelyGrad: thank you! I spent the summer sailing down in the South Pacific. Had the opportunity of doing some field work while down there. Though not a research cruise, it was a pretty neat experience!

RedPanda: Congrats on the acceptances!

RedPanda: No University of Hawaii? They do a fair bit of marine microbio work (and yes, have an ROV for ocean-bottom stuff). And it's HAWAII.

Going to second this. From what I hear, the CMORE building is just magnificent. Also, dock access to the newest ship in the UNOLS fleet is a great plus. (The Kilo did spring a pretty bad leak on a HOT cruise just recently, though.)

That's awesome! Are you hoping to do geomicrobiology here? (I'm finishing up my undergrad here this year)

taylorific - ahh, you're the first other MIT/WHOI applicant i've seen on here this year! (although, we have two very different subfields!)

Oooh. The CMORE building is awesome. I would love to work there.

Haha, yes. It's screwing up everyone's plans. Which is too bad because it's an amazing ship.

And it's not just the ship...it's the program. Because of the constancy of the work that's done at station ALOHA, you can get all sorts of historical and real-time data. Dr. Hand-Waver and I went out and just did our own thing while all of the HOT folks handled temperature, salinity, etc. measurements, DNA analysis, and whatever. So we can get access to all of that info without doing the work ourselves.

(FWIW, I was on the HOT cruise right before the one where it sprang the leak. After reading the news article a couple of weeks later I spent several days walking around saying, "That was close! That was close! Yikes, that was close!" )

Totally been there. Different cruise though, but yikes! Love that ship. I feel sorta bad for the guys who were on duty at the time; must have been nothing but sweat and salt for a few days..\

Isotope biogeochemistry!

Yes! Though I've definitely seen more syllables than that. I get the feeling that I might've met some of the people you might be interested in working with (judging from your list of schools); feel free to PM me.

Geophysics/geodynamics

Planetary interiors, potentially surfaces. Definitely physics-based.

Marine Geophysics - OBS, MORs, Magma Chambers and Rifting, and maybe a little biogeochem on the side if I get to look at vents. There are some really amazing prospects at my POIs.

*waves at LCBucky* Marine Geophysics is the future.
