New England Nat Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Cornell is not meeting until the end of february. So no one will know until then or early March. ugh They didn't inform last year until very late in March.
barricades Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Well U-Chicago seems to have notified all of its accepted applicants, which apparently does not include me... With this all in mind, does anyone here know if Chicago typically waitlists? And if so, do they notify or keep you hanging which some programs appear to do? Congrats, however, to all who had a wonderful day filled with great news!! Hopefully such a day visits us all soon. They will let you know if you're placed on a waitlist. And these things can come through at the last minute. Last year I got a call from mi POI at Chicago on April 15, in the afternoon, saying that a fully-funded spot had opened up. While the school was definitely one of, if not, my top choice, I had already settled on another of them. Usually, if you get in touch, your POI will keep you informed. But there's not much they can do besides speculate until someone drops out...
CageFree Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Rejected from Princeton too. I did apply to a couple of other programs but I will be going to UC Davis... it was in my top 2.
TMP Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 No TMP- NO!!! Its not "the Univeristy of Wisconsin- Madison"! Its only "THE Ohio State University"! How can THE OSU assume its rightful place atop the pantheon of the public school world if its preliminary article is not emphasized in a truly unique way?!?! Sheesh!! FIXED. At least I didn't make that mistake on my SOPs
New England Nat Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Rejected from Princeton too. I did apply to a couple of other programs but I will be going to UC Davis... it was in my top 2. UC Davis is a great school. And your top 2 is a great outcome. Congrats.
Simple Twist of Fate Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Also rejected from Princeton. Oh well, it was always a long shot. Two of my bigger long-shots are now out of the way at least. This stings a lot less than the first rejection did. Maybe because I knew when to expect it. Congrats to the acceptances this morning. Safferz, if you everdecide that the academic life isn't for you, I bet you could pay the bills by looking over desperate applicants' materials.
Kelkel Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Omg, is that a Duke acceptance I see on the board?! Maybe we'll finally figure out those who were admit to both Duke and Indiana.
goldielocks Posted February 9, 2012 Author Posted February 9, 2012 Congratulations to everyone who has been receiving wonderful news! And Safferz, I agree, you're kicking ass this year!
CageFree Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 UC Davis is a great school. And your top 2 is a great outcome. Congrats. Oh, I'm very happy with Davis. It really is the best fit for me, and I get to stay in the West Coast, near my family.
goldielocks Posted February 9, 2012 Author Posted February 9, 2012 I feel like everything is happening so fast this year. Is it just me? It's like February started and then all the floodgates opened. I have been thinking of those of you still waiting on good news, and just wanted to let you all know I've been sending good vibes your way and you've been in my thoughts. I know how stressed out I was waiting to hear back from Yale (which obviously I did not get), but it really worked out for the best. Northwestern is a much better fit for me, and I've had really great interactions with the faculty and students there so far. Who knows what sort of decision I might have made if I got an offer from Yale, which I thought was the best fit? It wasn't meant for me. I'm just sharing this to hopefully alleviate any anxiety/sadness you guys might be experiencing about rejections. I hope everyone finds the right fit. goldielocks, crazedandinfused, CageFree and 3 others 5 1

I agree with you, Goldie, on the fit thing- I'll elaborate on it later. Believe it or not, UW-Madison and OSU were my adviser's picks. My own picks have failed me miserably. I was actually thinking "wow, so much movement this week. I haven't seen that in my four years on this board." last night. for UW-Madison acceptees, judging from my POI's e-mail, they are in middle of deciding funding right now and will finalize everything in 2 weeks. So, just keep waiting for that e-mail!
R_Escobar Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Congrats to everyone who received acceptances so far today! It's amazing how many schools have already notified people, but in the grand scheme of things it has only been a few. I can't wait to see what the next couple of weeks brings to all the amazing scholars on this thread!
R_Escobar Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 OMG! I just received an email from the grad secretary at U Illinois saying that my letter was returned to their office and that they would resend it via snail mail and email me a copy of my acceptance. It has been a crazy two days for me. I am overwhelmed with so many emotions!
TMP Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 WOW!!! Congrats! Yeah, I recently moved and when I went to change my address on my OSU account, I realized that I put down the wrong state. Oh goodness gracious, I e-mailed the graduate assistant right away to tell him.... I think they still haven't sent out stuff yet, at least. I just wanted to make sure that my acceptance packet didn't get sent back to OSU! I'm still so stoked... And it's been barely 48 hours since that last piece of news from UW... schlesinger1 1
pugsley87 Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Hooray for the new Princetonites (sp?)! Also holy crap Safferz. You ARE the new Paura. Hang in tight, everyone. Especially those with Cornell--looks like a long month ahead.
crazedandinfused Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Congrats Escobar!!!! Can I ask: is that Illinois-Urbana or Illinois-Chicago? And thanks for the good vibes Goldie! They are much appreciated Now, can I please get an acceptance??

crazedandinfused Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 I've been wondering about UIC too. It's agonizing. There was that rejection yesterday so I would imagine they are close to notifying people. But their website is just absurdly slow to update. Their program has really grown on me lately, too...
emerald54 Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 (edited) I'm so happy for everyone who received good news yesterday and today. And send condolences to those who didn't find the right fit. It's been a pleasure to watch everyone go through this thrilling and, at times, incredibly trying process. I'll join in and give Safferz a standing ovation. On a side note, I'm on edge about UNC. I keep thinking that they will pop up any day now. Edited February 9, 2012 by emerald54
StrangeLight Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 That's really shocking. I've seen people shuttling between their offices with the packets and discussing them in the hall ways but whenever a current grad student or undergrad comes within earshot they stop talking about it. this particular POI is not one to confirm to department procedures or display any sort of tact. normally, no, professors don't discuss applicants in front of graduate students. and there are rarely any undergraduates in the department, period.
CageFree Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Just joining the Safferz fan club!!! Congrats!
usctrojanmia Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 If I haven't heard back from Columbia yet, should I assume that's a no? That seems to be the general consensus.
CPetersen Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 I'm on the Princeton waitlist. So much for my, until now, perfect record! The email reads, "Over the next several weeks we expect to make a small number of additional offers of admission," which is odd, because that doesn't exactly make it sound like the waitlist depends on other students declining. New England Nat, do you have any insight? Not too surprised, since it would be a little difficult for me there with Daniel Rodgers retiring, but Martha Sandweiss would be a great fit... Congrats to everyone else! Still a lot more places to hear back from.
Safferz Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Thanks everyone!! Really overwhelmed and excited right now, I just don't know what to do with myself! I should have added re: Columbia, it was an informal call from one of the African history professors who wanted to talk to me first. So if you haven't heard anything just yet, it doesn't necessarily mean you haven't gotten in, because I haven't received the official DGS email either. I'm on the Princeton waitlist.
