I am trying to distract myself with grading... It is the worst part of teaching... At least my classes are much better than last semester!

Haha yes, I will definitely exercise more prudence in checking my voicemail. Between that, and finding out that one of my offers initially went to the incorrect email address (their mistake, not mine, but still alarming), I am feeling a bit paranoid today.

Well good afternoon my brethren and sistern! First off, big Congrats to you Goldie! I am inspired to write a sonnet about checking one's voice mail now but I'll hold off on that till I start doing that myself. So how is everybody who is lurking out there today?

wait teachers actually grade stuff objectively? And here I was for years beliving it was a random draw that got me all those Cs and Ds for years and not my ineptitude to formulate a logical argument. ::FACE PALM::

Since receiving the good news, my motivation level just suddenly plummeted. I have no desire to keep up with my languages. No desire to look over my journal article edits. No desire to...read.... just... you know, basically feeling like a second-semester high school senior all over again. Am I the only one who's suffering a grad school version of "senioritis"?

I'm trying to think positive! I'm trying to remember why I have to keep up with these things for the time being and what good will come out of doing them.

Here's to another week. Hoping for the very best for those who don't have news yet- you still have 2-3 weeks left in the admissions cycle! You're already halfway through!

I hear you! I don't think I've gotten much work done at all in February, and before the acceptances I was feeling paralyzed by the wait. I'm hoping the realization that I'm travelling on Sunday and have no choice but to be productive this week will kick in soon

Hi all. Long-time poster, first time lurker.

I've been laying off the boards for the past several days, cuz I just feel pretty skeeved out about everything now. I've put all of my chips into the elite grad school pot, and I feel like I have a gut-shot straight draw.

Me and my wife are totally fine with packing up and heading to great (Northern) Midwest. But as I sit here with only one as-of-yet-unfunded acceptance, followed by three straight rejections, and people getting admitted all over the place in my other schools (now that Cornell has joined in on the fun), its hard to find the silver-lining...

I'm not trying to evoke sympathy or support (though, by all means send it if you must!), and I certainly do not want to rain on the parades of those that are getting great news, its just been a hard, hard week of hearing nothing (except my token Yale reject)...

so, for all my "brethren and sistern" (are you o-serius with that one, dude?!) that feel like singing blues, what say we all break out our sunglasses, shot glasses and harmonicas just for tonight and tomorrow we'll get back on the "We Believe" bandwagon...I'm buyin'...

2-3 weeks sounds like an eternity and yet only a month ago ... that would've sounded like heaven :)

Its always nice when those 'sure things' come thru for ya!

I do like it when things stay, as Shakespeare said, 'constant as the northern star'

I haven't posted anything on the results page, but I was accepted into Cornell's program. They made all the final decisions yesterday (Saturday), and my POI emailed me this afternoon to let me know that I was accepted. He said a formal letter will be sent out this week. He also said that they will be accepting 10-12 students this year. I will definitely be accepting the offer as it is my top choice. I'm pretty excited.

congratulations, sendiri!!

i have to say, i like yale's move towards interviews and i hope more programs follow suit. the sciences already make interviews part of their admissions process and i think both the applicant and the program can learn a lot about each other (good and bad) before any decisions are made.

Congrats, sendin'! Cornell really is in middle of nowhere but a very beautiful area! Just... don't fall in the gorges! :)

I'm with you, SL and Yale. I've actually been told that it's really nice for POIs to actually meet applicants in person to get a sense of who they're looking at and may be working with for years to come. I do think applying to PhD programs, in a way, is much like finding a job in a company that really fits you. I've been offered a lot of job interviews and it's surprising to see how, even though you're desperate for a job, you can learn so much about the workplace and if you would truly be happy there. I had a job interview for a quite cushion-y position in a historical society, while I loved all the perks of the job, meeting the people and understanding the environment really made me think twice if I was offered the job. (Apparently, I was their second choice. Oh well!)

Same went for some of the PhD programs. A good match between the student, the POI, and the program, I think, can go a very long way.
