pugsley87 Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Always nice to start my Monday workday with a rejection lol. Then again, considering that one school rejected me last year on Valentine's Day and another on my anniversary, this doesn't really shock me anymore. My condolences to my fellow Duke rejectees :-/ .
SapperDaddy Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Sorry for the rejections everyone. It sure sucks.
sandyvanb Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Sorry Pugley and to the other Duke rejections... Hopefully the rest of the week will be more positive!
Hopin'-n-Prayin' Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Holy Black Monday- Would have loved to applied to Duke, but there was no match with the faculty- looks I saved a few bucks on that one... sorry for the bad news all...
goldielocks Posted February 6, 2012 Author Posted February 6, 2012 Condolences to everyone who received bad news from Duke. Sending good vibes your way!
sandyvanb Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Well I just got good news! I was a part of a panel proposal for a conference in Lancaster, UK this August and it got accepted! I am hoping that this is the trend of the week!

Hopin'-n-Prayin' Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 (edited) I have an idea that I want to run by the group. I am considering creating a new thread which lists by screen name, all of the schools we have been admitted to. Not schools applied to, rejected by or waitlisted by; only schools with acceptances. There are 2 main reasons I think a 'clearinghouse' thread for this info would be helpful. First, as the season presses on, and potential cohorts start to take shape, it would make it much easier for us to get into direct contact with other by referencing that list and then sending a pm than by casting a line on this thread. When I finally have a clearer idea of what my choices are (I hope I have choices anyway) or where I am actually going, I will want to touch base with others regarding subfields, sharing info on housing, seeing who is going to open house etc... Secondly, those of us that do get waitlisted from preferred schools will now be able to go to this thread and pm admitees (especially those that also show acceptances from other schools) regarding thier intentions about the waitlisted school... I think this would be very helpful. I will construct the original list (it will take me a few days to go back to mid-January, of course) and people can self-update it as they get new good news. I have no desire to be the thread police, but it would work best if there was little or no chit-chat on that thread, so that anyone needing to refer to or update the list can simply view the most recent post... Any thoughts- if no one thinks it would be helpful, I will simply spend that time perpetually refreshing my inbox (very happily and neurotically). If there are objections, of course, I'd be interested in hearing them too! Edited February 6, 2012 by Hopin'-n-Prayin'
Grimm101 Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Has anyone received rejection news from Wisconsin? I still haven't heard anything and I'm assuming this means I was rejected. Congrats to all the admits!

Simple Twist of Fate Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 I was one of the Duke rejectees. Not surprised, but still disappointing. It's tough staring out with bad news as I've spent this morning doubting if I'll ever get in anywhere. Yeah. That place. Oh well. Condolences to other duke rejections and thanks for the kind words everyone.
crazedandinfused Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Hang in there TwistOfFate!!!! It's still VERY early (ugh). And I second the new thread idea, even though I don't fully understand how it would work.

It's tough staring out with bad news as I've spent this morning doubting if I'll ever get in anywhere. Yeah. That place. Oh well. I'm there with you, mostly because I have yet to hear from any program (even ones that have already sent out rejections and acceptances).
Kelkel Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Man has it been a bad morning at work for me. I can't wait to peace out of this place and go back to school. I knew I would miss school, but I never thought I would miss it this bad. Reading, tests and papers oh my!
PhillyPhan896 Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 I also got rejected from Duke this morning (although I did not post it in the admissions bank). It was a little surprising, since I had several pleasant conversations with my POI earlier in the fall, and our interests matched up exceedingly well. Perhaps they are taking a smaller cohort this year... that's what I'll keep telling myself, at least. Better luck to everyone in the days ahead!
Hopin'-n-Prayin' Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 And I second the new thread idea, even though I don't fully understand how it would work. Lol... it would simply list user names and schools accepted to. For instance Goldielocks: SUNY-Buffalo, Northwestern Kelkel: Miami U. (MA) Pugsley87: Johns Hopkins ticklemepink: Wisconsin- Madison then you can simply copy and paste the user name into the search bar and message away...
Kelkel Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 I think it sounds like a good idea! There was a thread like that last year in March or so where people reported where all they had gotten into and what their plan was. Yours definitely seems more direct.
Hopin'-n-Prayin' Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Welcome back phillyphan! ...just the other day, I was wondering happened to you/envying your ability to stay away... ps: sorry about Duke
uhohlemonster Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 so this is actually a quiet day unless you applied to duke... wah-wah. sorry to those who got bad news it's still early!
Astarabadi Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 NYU is the only other program that comes to mind that doesn't require teaching. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem to hurt career prospects for Princeton or NYU grads. Actually, teaching is an important part of training as a graduate student. Also, I know two of my friends from Princeton who opted not to focus on being TAs or TIs and it did hurt them in the long run. One of them had a good deal of trouble finding a job, and finally settled in another Ivy League in NYC. He had to teach as visiting professor at 3 places across the country to build enough experience so that his current place would hire him. A degree from Princeton only took him so far. I also know from another friend who now works at a good state school and got a degree from one as well...I quote "Ivy league/good private school graduates have a very specialized knowledge of the subject, but they lack in a vast, general knowledge of the subject area. They also have minimal teaching experience, which makes them less attractive as candidates for jobs. with graduates from state schools, they are not necessarily specialized but have worked as TAs, or have had to do so to maintain funding". I don't know how true that is for subjects outside the Humanities, but from what I can tell it might be true.
crazedandinfused Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Hey, congrats to whoever got in at Ohio State!!!! What a weird day.....
A Finicky Bean Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Hey all, After all the drama with USC not having my stuff matched to my maiden name...I got the ol' rejection letter today in the mail. It was nice and gentle. Didn't really make me sad. Kinda indifferent about it, probably because of the way the history dept. secretary was mean when I called to fix the issue a few weeks back. But, hey, now I can at least say I'm in the game! Hopefully one school will take a chance on me!!
crazedandinfused Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 (edited) Stay strong AFB!!! It will happen. Plus, who wants to go to a program with a mean secretary anyway? Edited February 6, 2012 by crazedandinfused
Safferz Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Sorry to hear about all the rejections today! I hope we'll all receive good news soon. Any predictions for schools we'll hear from this week?
dukelover50 Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Was Duke taking applications this year at all? There are so many rejections that it seems like they forgot to put that little memo on the website....
