hi -

i am applying to carnegie mellon... i just double checked the deadline and it says "Friday, January 28th", which isn't a real day ... slideroom says the deadline isn't for 4 more days. I'm confused! Anybody know what's up?

I'd call the department asap. But, I'd also go with whatever Slideroom says is the deadline since they (the University) have to input the correct/actual date when they sign up for Slideroom...point being, you can be more sure Slideroom would be correct rather than some webmaster/typo on the CMU site.

Call them Monday! Best of luck :)

Email, call and reach out! Never hurts to double check! They're use to it. Good luck!!

Hello

Does anyone know roughly when we can begin to hear bacl from Universities as I'm away travelling as part of a project for a month and have limited access to the internet during this time!

Any time between now and April :) So, you might want to contact the departments to which you applied and give them alternate contact info (parents, friends), or allow alternate people to check your email and answer your phone, before you leave. Otherwise, you'll get left behind if the schools don't hear from you.

what does the preliminary selection phase entail?

I'm assuming the preliminary phase at all programs entails narrowing a short list of people with gpa's to par and with complete and correct applications.

Yale doesn't have a GPA requirement - the preliminary phase is graduate students looking through work and culling interesting from not (I'm not an expert on their process, though).

I assume that is the case at many schools. It's kind of scary that our success at a particular school is initially dependent upon what graduate students think of it. Good work might not even get seen by faculty who may have a greater appreciation for or understanding of a particular portfolio than that of graduate students.

Isn't it crazy to already be talking about next round? Not that I haven't been thinking about that too, but most of us haven't even heard back from anywhere yet! This waiting period is not constructive, it's making me think back on all of these things i could have done differently with my apps...

Yep! I've been really nervous about my slides since I showed a friend which ones I put in and she kept making concerned noises. The career counsellor sat with me for an hour and helped me choose the images, and she's also a curator, but I'm nervous now.

two years ago I made the shortlist at Tyler.....only to get ripped apart by a grad student during the interview.... one of the most embarrassing moments of my life thus far. I was so nervous standing in front of the current students and two faculty members. Really hope I don't go through anything like that again.

Jesus Berto what did they do?

I am not good in front of complete strangers, nor am I good about talking about my work to complete strangers especially when there is a prize to be won.

The student could tell I nervous and kept asking me really stupid questions that made me feel even more nervous while everyone else was stone cold silent.

I honestly felt it was the first time they were looking at my images......I see the student now and again in my neighborhood and I just want throw a stick in his spokes.

all in all it was for the better. The program might be in the top ten, but the studios suck, facility is meh, and the funding is poor.

the same kind of thing happened to me when i interviewed at Royal college of art! the faculty members on the panel were all fine, but this one student kept trying to put me on the spot and made me so uncomfortable.

its the worst right?

totally! it really took me by surprise, i just expected some kind of encouragement/solidarity from students, i mean, they went through the same process so recently!!

but yes, I'm hoping for better this year (if i get invited to interview!), and if not at least i'll be less taken aback.

Heard back (somewhat) from a school, they just wanted me to finish up my rec providers so they could tell me their decision. Their deadline isn't for a bit but I guess they already reviewed my portfolio. They said they were very interested in my application and that I showed a lot potential and they enjoyed viewing my work. So fingers crossed! I know ppl will ask but I'd prefer not to say what school just yet.

good to hear back actual feedback from a school esp after UCSB rejection.

Brown, you have a great range of schools there. That should be a model for others in terms of picking a range of selectivity.

thanks, thats actually hilarious bc my advisor HATES my range choices, it's been an uphill battle selecting these but I'm happy with it and I'm the one who has to live with it, so...

Nice wide range is a good thing. I'm all for casting the net wide and far. :)

Interesting, why does your advisor hate your range of choices?

He doesnt like the location of some of them (he believes I should stay up east due to its museums, collections, and "culture") and strongly thinks I should only look into the top 10 and that looking further than that is lacking ambition and that i shouldn't fuss about funding situations either and go to the best ranked school regardless.

we argue. often. but he's a gem and has helped my work immensely so I take his advice and listen

"We argue. Often. But he's a gem..." Lolol...I know the type :)

Ambition can be found in only one place, and that's in one's head. You could go to BFE University, and if you had ambition and drive, you could make something happen, especially in this day and age.

And, let's face it, while one is being ambitious (and lucky) with one's talent, it's quite nice not to have 100K in debt hanging over one's head...good that you didn't take that bit of his advice concerning $.

Best of luck on your apps!

You are right, might as well skip past all the waiting! Thanks, you too :)

I definitely know the type too, sounds like an old professor of mine.

I checked out your website and I was very impressed! your abstractions are so dynamic. congrats on (somewhat) hearing back from a school, I hope that works out!

I agree that you should definitely keep your options open. But, I will say I believe I have learned a lot more at SAIC than I would have if I chose the much cheaper, smaller, more rural school (that is still a very good school) opinion. I could have driven myself to make great work at the other school, as I did through my undergrad, but I believe I have learned so much more at SAIC. I keep in touch with some of the faculty and students at the other school and have exhibitied with them, so I have a really good idea of the differences between the programs. Sometimes the expense is worth it.

Hi, all.

This is my first post but I've been glued to this forum ever since a friend of mine told me about it. I have a question for you. One of the programs I applied to will likely send out notifications in mid- or late February, but another of my schools' applications is not due until February 15. If I am given an offer from the first school, how can I wait it out (to hear from the rest of my schools) without insulting the first school? I know they like to get responses from students quickly, but I don't want to mess up my chances at other schools by biting the first lure casted my way.

What would you guys do?

Good luck to all! I'm so glad this forum exists. It's so respectful and so helpful.
