lolopixie Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 If I recall, lolopixie mentioned that he/she is tired of clarifying Ohio rather than FL. Could be confusing lolo with another user, though. Confusing me with someone else I applied to Miami, FL. I want to skip to the keys! Lol
marlowe Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Well...you can't actually run over the bridge to the Keys, unless you're thinking of Key Biscayne and the Rickenbacker Causeway. But Key Biscayne isn't a "Key" as in a Florida Key... I have been lied to! I ran over a bridge into what I thought was the keys. Thanks for straightening me out.
perrykm2 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Duke. I applied to only the schools I'd want to go to and would provide full funding, though, so I will be happy if I get accepted anywhere.
woolferine Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 (edited) NYU or Stanford, but to echo all of you, I will be thrilled to go wherever I am accepted (if I even am accepted). I applied to thirteen and I keep repeating that I will be able to emotionally/mentally handle up to twelve rejections, ha. Just need to get into one... Edited January 14, 2012 by woolferine
vertige Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Princeton. I told them so. I hope they didn't see that as an act of desperation? I just thought it would be nice for them to know they wouldn't be wasting an offer on me hehe. I am torn though because I don't know if I would be socially happy there. I went to college in Philly and visited P-ton a few times, and it felt a little soul-crushing. Yale would be more fun I think; people are sprightlier and far more liberal it seems. But yea, if I got accepted to any one of my schools I would be running and singing my little lungs out like Julie Mother%$?#ing Andrews JeremiahParadise 1

I'm from England, though, and of all of them I have only visited Columbia. I have a friend who turned down Princeton because he found it soul-crushing when he visited ... I'm quite intrigued, since you have said this as well. It's almost good that I haven't visited these places, though -- it reduces the chance of getting attached to one particularly. As I said previously, I really like the idea of Yale, but all I know about it is what my recommender told me and about how it would be a great fit. I've calmed down after my post-application week of high anxiety. I have quietly made peace with the idea that I'll get rejected from everywhere, whereas before I was in this frustrated, anxious, and frankly selfish ("I deserve to get in! I'll be so angry if I don't!") state of mind. vertige and wreckofthehope 2
marlowe23 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I'd really love to get into Vanderbilt or UT Knoxville; UT Knoxville has a new center for Renaissance studies. I'm also interested in CUNY. Maria DiGangi is one of the few people who've written on my topic of interest.

Once you're in, I really think your perception of a school changes. So I really do want acceptance at certain schools, but I really want to keep an open mind for wherever I get in. Yale is a bit shinier and more social, but perhaps with Princeton - as in many situations - still waters run deep. All it takes is getting to know a few fabulous people to totally change your perception of a place. Also, I realize how wildly speculative it is to assume I'll get in anywhere, but considering the relative importance of such a decision, I still want to be prepared to make the right choice. That's not as easy as it seems. Where are you at in the U.K.? Edited January 14, 2012 by vertige
cread Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Carnegie Mellon. They waitlisted me last year, which only brings my hopes up even higher. But really, I'll be happy if I'm offered admission anywhere--another round of rejections would be rough. Grunty DaGnome 1
ecritdansleau Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 (edited) Am I the only one whose top choice school fluctuates by day/week? Ultimately, I feel as if a positive reaction of faculty members to my work would tip over my favor to a program; we all talk about program A and B, but it ultimately comes down to the people there. And yet, I remind myself of elementary school "does he like me because if not then I don't like him" *cough*. Edited January 15, 2012 by ecritdansleau litjust 1

But really, I'll be happy if I'm offered admission anywhere--another round of rejections would be rough. Same situation. I would love to go to UC Davis, where I was waitlisted last year...but everywhere I applied this year is a pretty good fit, and I would be happy with any offer. Good luck to you!
litjust Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I'm not sure. I applied to three programs (Madison, Berkeley, & MSU) with strong people in my field (language & literacy) and I enjoy aspects of all those programs equally. Plus, there are unique opportunities for interdisciplinary work at each school. Though, Madison and Berkeley are ranked higher than MSU, I'm not even sure if that matters to me anymore. I have to wait and see what happens in the next few months.
darjeelingtea16 Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 My top choice this year would be Notre Dame's Lit program. I was waitlisted last year when I applied for the English program, but the Lit program is so much more up my alley. A close second would be Cornell's Comp Lit program, followed by Hawaii's English program (though Hawaii's funding is a bit meh). Crossing my fingers for everyone!
litjust Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I take back what I said previously. This week it's Madison.
eriksmegs Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Am I the only one whose top choice school fluctuates by day/week? You are not the only one. Sometimes my top choice school fluctuates by the hour. But the University of Rochester is always near the very top of my list.
