bitou2010 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Yeah, when I found out I was waitlisted at one of my top choices -- and I was so certain I would be straight out rejected, as this particular program doesn't conduct interviews -- I lost my breath and then flipped out. Then, it was extremely exciting! Now, its much less so. I too have no acceptances and am desperately hoping that I'll be pulled off of one. I guess it changes based on my mood: When I'm feeling good, I just *know* I'll get pulled off the waitlist. Other times I feel that I'm just being teased and will end up with no acceptances. It's really a tough spot. I am on the same spot.. Rejected everywhere , but waitlisted on my top choice . The DGP told me that the situation will be more clear until April the 15 when those who got accepted give him a response. He asked me to be patient.
tspeechie Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 I go on to the Results Survey all the time throughout the day hoping to see others get accepted off of the waitlists (3/4 of schools) I'm on but nothing yet. I was hoping I wouldn't have to wait until the 15th, but I suppose that's how it's going to be. Absolutely maddening! The sense of the subjectivity and randomness of it all drives me crazy. The not knowing of when the news will come..... When I was MUCH younger, my boyfriend went into the military and was sent overseas. He couldn't make phone calls. I would religiously watch the mailbox everyday anxiously waiting for a letter, desperate to hear any news from him. Now that I am 42 (yikes) I never thought I'd feel 18 again! It feels exactly the same......of course things didn't work out with that boyfriend so I am hoping for a better outcome with this situation. Sometimes when you think you're so sure of something, life sends you in a different direction. So I am trying not to be so rigid in my thinking. Hoping for what I want but knowing I need to be flexible too in case that doesn't come to fruition. I'm glad I'm not the only one in this boat! Good luck to all! CTC and carlisle 2
Coralie McEachron Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Brunett88 and Sweetnighter, Too funny, and same here! I did a "happy song" when I found out I was waitlisted, and now ... I check e-mail obsessively. I also had a cruel bout with getting a financial aid letter mentioning my files were incomplete, and that as soon as I receive my student ID and pin then I'll be able to check through the school's website about details of my funding. Next day, a rejection letter from the same school. Their psychology department and financial aid department must not be on same page, although I am considering inquiring. Good luck to everyone, and hopefully a substantial amount of us will get off the waitlist --- or go up on the butcher block for Round 2 of the slaughterhouse *cough cough* for grad school (don't know if I mean the application process, or my bank account if I do this again lol!)
cardinaltony Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 So...are there schools that have waitlists and don't tell anyone about it? I applied to 8 schools for a philosophy Ph.D. and have been rejected from all but one of them. Thing is, the last school I heard from was almost a month ago, and the school I'm waiting to hear back from, Boston U, has only told me recently that they have not yet made a decision. Could I be on a waitlist but they don't want to tell me for some reason? Or do they just reject people all at once really late? I'm clueless here....
latti Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Hey, how do you guys know if you are waitlisted? I just applied for several universities and now result from 3 of them. It just put me in weird situation. I cannot even make decision about if I should leave my current university or if I should even rent and apartment. Could not apply for dormitory etc..
Fiona Thunderpaws Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 When I'm feeling good, I just *know* I'll get pulled off the waitlist. Other times I feel that I'm just being teased and will end up with no acceptances. It's really a tough spot. This has been my story for the past 5 weeks or so now. I'm an all-or-nothing kind of girl, so I'll either go to my top choice or continue waiting tables for the foreseeable future. I feel like I'm one of the nerdy kids in High School hoping for an invite to the cool kids' party!
duhnay Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I am in that boat also. I have had an interview from one program but will find out by June 1st from them. My POI, I have heard nothing from, nada. I received 1 email saying my application was complete and received but that is it. I am wondering if I am 'waitlisted' and do not know? Is that possible? I mean the deadline was Feb. 15th so it has not been that long, I guess. But I am concerned I haven't heard anything from them. any advice for those that applied mid Feb? thanks so much!
Gneiss1 Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Waitlisted here as well. Part waitlisting and part just plain waiting. I'm starting to get really nervous (as if I wasn't already). But thanks for starting this thread! They said I should here back by April 31st at the most, which just seems like a long way from now. April 31st? But that doesn't exist! They really will never tell you! How cruel! ok ok sorry just trying to add some levity to the situation. Waiting sucks:( I really hope we all get good answers soon!

I think that some schools do not utilize an official waitlist, but rather reserve decision on applications until they determine whether or not they have a place for the potential student. Also, admissions is typically done in waves. So, there is an initial wave of acceptances and rejections based upon a first review of the applicant pool and available space for students. Then, they determine more closely what space is still available in each area of study and make determinations on applications in a second wave. Sometimes there can be additional waves based upon responses from students in the first waves. It sounds like you are in a similar position to me. The only way I would even know I am on a waitlist is because I inquired. My application status has not changed online to "wait-listed" or anything. But, I will also say that this year there has been a considerable amount of applicants who inquired about an application only to find out they had been rejected, but the rejection had not been communicated to them. I would recommend politely inquiring about your application if you have not done so already. Best of luck on your final app. I hope it's a delayed acceptance!

If your online status has not changed, you should politely inquire about the status of your application. I recommend either asking the director of graduate studies for your particular program or the student affairs officer for your department. They might not be able to give a lot of information, but they will probably give you enough to give you some peace of mind. Best of luck.
Guest Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 Hey guys, I am also wait listed at my top choice, Duke, with multiple "back ups" that are actually fairly equivalent to their program. I just have a soft spot for a lot of the theologians there and could see myself working with anyone from a group of about 20 faculty with the same exact interests to my own.

You are exactly right about the wailist system.. Thats where I'm in the school I apply to and they told me the wait can go till en of may , but the second waive is after April the 15 th.
Marshall Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 I am wait listed for funding at the program I really had my hope up for. I'm feeling very down and very negative about the possibility of getting off the wait list considering I have really 1 week until the deadlines. I've been accepted to the program so I'm curious about a few things. People might wait up until the last minute to reject, does this mean I have to accept the offer w/o funding and HOPE that up to or after April 15th when people do make their decisions final I'll get funding?
Kaitwhite Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 I am waitlisted at 2 programs and one said it could be until June 4th and the other said it could be as late as August!! Ughh, this is exhausting. I am still waiting to hear back from 2 programs! Keeping my fingers crossed!
IRToni Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 I just got into my one WL, Yale. Won't be able to accept it due to finances, but just wanted to let you know that people do get off the WL..
Gneiss1 Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 I got accepted into my top choice with full funding and tuition waiver on Wednesday I believe it was. So it definitely isn't over yet, good things can still happen:)

So it definitely isn't over yet, good things can still happen:) It's definitely not over until all the decisions are in. I'll be happy with either of the two schools I'm waiting on (I'm waitlisted at one, and haven't heard anything at all from the other). I almost forget that I'm waiting to hear back these days. Especially with finals and graduation right around the corner.
