brown06 Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 I used a separate summary I have about my work that I generally have set aside for grants I apply to. Good luckĀ
printmaker2013 Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 http://www.petersons.comĀ suggests the following: Ā U. South Florida - 28% AcceptanceĀ Tyler Dept. of Graphic Arts & DesignĀ (and Printmaking?) - 7% Tyler Dept. of Painting, Drawing, & Sculpture - 4% Tyler School of Art (overall) - 11% Ā Hope that helps! Thanks! Printmaking is thrown into the "graphic arts" category so I guess I'm looking at 7%... USF is connected with Graphicstudio, a pretty well-known printmaking facility so hopefully if I can't make it into Tyler I would still have a shot at a decent school. Really wishing I had applied to more schools.
Linder Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 I used a separate summary I have about my work that I generally have set aside for grants I apply to. Good luckĀ I was thinking I'd use my artist statement for exhibitions...I guess I'll minimize how much I go in depth about my work in my statement of purpose then. Thanks!
indigoconcord Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 Hello! Working on my UCLA application for MFA Painting...and it's the only school that asks for both a statement of purpose and artist's statement. Ā SOP Prompt- "Please state your purpose in applying for graduate study. Describe your scholarly and research area(s) of interest, experiences that contributed to your preparation in the field, and your plans for your future occupation or profession. Briefly describe experiences that have prepared you for advanced study or research, and provide any additional information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for graduate study at UCLA. If you are applying for a research masters or doctoral program, you are encouraged to indicate specific research interests and potential faculty mentors." Ā Artist's Statement Prompt-Ā "In addition to submitting the required Statement of Purpose, please use this section to submit a short statement about your artwork. The statement should be no longer than 3000 characters (approximately 500 words)." Ā It's really throwing me off my application groove...any thoughts?? I took my Yale statement that compacted all of that info into 500 words, split up the personal stuff from the art stuff and expanded on each. The personal stuff turned into the UCLA statement of purpose. it was 500 something words and the art statement ended up being only about 300. was a little uneasy at its relatively short/concise structure when i submitted it, but feel good after re-reading it. dont add useless info.
indigoconcord Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 (edited) I was thinking I'd use my artist statement for exhibitions... I definitely would not do this. Edited January 8, 2013 by indigoconcord
Erpnope Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 This is a weird one. Is anyone having trouble pasting into the UCLA input fields for the essays? I'm trying to paste my SOP and it won't let me. (both on chrome and safari on a 2011 mac..) I have access to some other computers but it's a bit of a hike, so i'm just wondering if anyone has had this problem or luck on another browser?

Erpnope Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 i had the same problem, very irritating. i gave up trying to paste and ended up retyping everything. Ā Did some digging, apparently it's a problem within chrome and safari and the Apply Yourself program. Firefox should let anyone having the same problem on a mac copy and paste. A few other schools use it too, like USC and SAIC so folks might have the same problem with different schools... Ā From the Apply yourself App's FAQ:Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā If you are trying to copy text from a word document or other source into an essay field of the application, you may be encountering that theĀ pastingĀ is not completing. This a know issue in Safari on Mac. To resolve this issue please see listed below are a couple of options (according to Safari's website). 1. In the older version of Mac (10.4X), use a different browser (such as firefox) to resolve the issue.Ā 2. In the new version of MacBook (10.5X), you have an option of "Match andĀ PasteĀ Style" in the Edit Menu. Or use the keyboard shortcut Command + Option + Shift + V.

Ā Your artist statement should not have anything to do with why you are applying to graduate school. That should be a paragraph or two about the type of work you make, the research you do, other precedents, future ideas, etc. Ā A statement of purpose/intent for anything (in your case, for graduate school) is a more in-depth investigation of where your work has lead you both professionally and personally. But most importantly, it is a declaration of your goals, why graduate school is necessary for you to meet those goals, and why that particular program and faculty are a great match for you - based on the fundamentals of the program and the work of the faculty. Its also a way for you to sell yourself by writing about certain exhibitions or projects you've been involved with. You may have that outlined somewhat in a resume or cv, but the statement is where you can really highlight those moments you have in your repertoire that will set you apart from the pack. kwonberry Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Submitted my apps. Just waiting on my recommendation letters from two professors. Expecting to finish my undergrad this spring. Crossing fingers. Ā Sculpture: Ā Yale SAIC UCLA USC CalArts Columbia Ā davidkwon13.blogspot.com the page has some messy writings that are for a class and are not relevant to the artworks posts.
Erpnope Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 ucla app is supper buggy. won't let me save & advance in firefox so it means i have to type everything out in chrome? c'mon, this is ridiculous.
emeliej Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Almost done with my applications.. Just nervous about my portfolio since one of my professors e-mailed me about changes/saying some was weaker and that I have stronger images I should include instead. I sort of agree but I don't want to look "scattered" and rather show 2 series of images that are cohesive than including some images that may be stronger but don't work well with the rest. I have one series that I'm happy with and feel confident about and then I have more recent work that just isn't resolved yet.Ā hmmm.... Ā I'm applying to: SAIC VCU Herron School of Art and Design Washington University in St. Louis University of Florida University of Arizona Ā for photo! littlenova 1
lady rainicorn Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Hurrah! All my materials have been submitted! Now time to just sit and wait... oh the torture! >O<
ArsenicYellow Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Almost done with everything, just need to take pictures of two more sculptures I finished this week. Already submitted all my paperwork, just need to submit my slideroom portfolio.Ā Ā School I'm applying for (MFA Sculpture): Rhode Island School of Design Virginia Commonwealth University of Connecticut Syracuse MassArt Boston University Umass:Dartmouth Umass:Amherst School of Museum of Fine Arts Boston Ā VCU, Uconn, and Syracuse are all sort of extra applications, I'd much rather stay near New England. Recently moved from New Orleans up to Massachusetts so I can become a resident and save some tuition cost. At this point, I've had a pretty low expectation of getting into grad school, maybe due to the fact that I've been away from college for a year and not around fellow students, making me question my actual artistic talent. This isn't a whine post, mostly wondering if others have that same feeling (I assume they do). Ā I also worry because my portfolio has a lot of the same color schemes (Neutral/yellow), I wonder if thats a bad thing.Ā Ā As soon as the application process is done, I'll be going back to New Orleans for two weeks so hopefully that will make the wait easier, take my mind off of things. I'm also applying to residencies, Skowhegan/sculpturespace/Bemis in case this whole grad school thing doesnt work out.Ā
Erpnope Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 (edited) ^ don't forgetĀ Djerassi! Or Vermont Studio Center. I think VSC is a good stepping stone for a lot of people for larger/more competitive residencies. You may want to look into Kimmel Harding Nelson, too. Edited January 10, 2013 by Erpnope
ArsenicYellow Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 I also have a question about photos. What size/resolution did you guys post your slides/photos? A lot of the schools dont mention sizes or resolution. Thanks Erpnope, definitely checking those schools out.Ā
aethiryn Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 If the schools dont mention sizes I would just adhere to what other schools provide as guidelines. For example UCLA states, Ā "Maximum file size is 1024w x 768h at 72dpi. File sizes may not exceed 3MB per file." I've found that most schools follow this guideline. I would double check to see what the guidelines are. It may be on the website, or on the application site/slideroom. Good Luck!Ā
LovelyPainter Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Hi everyone! Thought I would finally chime in Ā This will be my 3rd round. I seem to be getting luckier each round, (1st round-Rejections all around, 2nd-interviews with one admit) so I hope third times the charm... Ā Finishing up my last two applications and then I will be attempting to ignore the fact that I ever applied... (I drove myself crazy last year) Ā Ā Lots of luck everyone!

LovelyPainter Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 So regarding deadlines, does letter of recomendations have to be sent by the aplication deadline or can arive later. Ā for example RISD deadline is jan 10 can I applay noweven that I know that letters of recommendation will arive a bit later, also for resume. Ā PLease anyone help Ā So sorry, this is a too late response. Did you apply? I applied late-ish too, on the 6th and just made sure my recommenders would be willing to overnight letters for me. I sent them all giftcards too as a thank you.
Tomislav Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 So sorry, this is a too late response. Did you apply? I applied late-ish too, on the 6th and just made sure my recommenders would be willing to overnight letters for me. I sent them all giftcards too as a thank you. Well I did applay, but advisor told that they can email her letters and that I can email her resume/cv statement of purpose and artist statement (about artwork) which I did
ArsenicYellow Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 I sent out my RISD application on 8th (overnight from MA), had my references mail out in December and just finished slideroom . Now its just waiting until March while having a horribly pessimistic attitude. At least there's always residencies to apply to.
norq Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Hellos to all artists noticing extra white hairs every day... future silver foxes of America, by April 2013. Got a laundry list of schools I'd like to wear: Ā UMASS Amherst UMASS Dartmouth LSU UCONN VCU UW Madison UC Irvine UNC Chapel Hill Tyler & Cornell Ā all for sculpture. worldly 1
Jacque Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 All my applications are in and now it's just a waiting game. Ā I'm not very stressed about the whole situation; if I get admits then I get admits, if not then I'll just continue working to make things happen outside of graduate work.
snoopdoggyartstudent Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Hi guys just wanted to ask specifically about Brooklyn College MFA - has anyone applied or gone there that can tell me even the smallest tidbit of information? Strangely, there seems to be nothing about it other than on their website and although they are probably right when they say the program is unbelievably great, I thought it might be better to get an outsider's opinion. Obviously Hunter is the cuny gem, but just though it would be nice to have a ny backup. any help would be smooth dawg
