edpsych2013
I got the official link to my letter today from Berkeley. I was notified by my adviser and the department before I received my letter today, though. Congrats! If you don't mind, I'd be curious to hear what program you've heard back from. I applied to their Human Development and Education program (probably my top choice), and haven't heard anything yet. From looking at the results board, it's clear that historically the good news comes out in February and the bad news in March. Freaking out, I called the admissions office last Monday (the 25th) and was told that no decisions for HDE had been made, as far as the admissions coordinator knew. She told me that HD applicants would start hearing back anywhere from the week of March 4th through the end of the month. I tried calling a few times on Friday to see if she had any update, but couldn't get through. Also, for folks worrying about Michigan/Midwest weather, it's really not that bad. I've spent the last 4 years in the Midwest after growing up in the warm and sunny west coast; it was a shock at first (especially the first winter), but you get used to it faster than you might think. Ann Arbor especially is *beautiful* in the winter, particularly after a snowfall. Just make sure to bundle up and you should be fine Edited March 2, 2013 by edpsych2013

sshopeful
Thank you, iphi. Also, iphi is right -- I did not apply to HDE at Berkeley. I do know, however, that decisions are still being made across the school of education and that a lot of students (in many departments) are graduating this year, thus opening up assistantships and advisers for students. Don't use the previous years' posts as guides, because it's a very different "game" this year. There is a GSE visit day, but not every accepted student will be invited. The reason for that is: some people might be accepted after the visit day. iphi and edpsych2013

Loseric
OMG. See, "cold" temperature on its own is not bad. But cold + wind = BRUTAL. Same thing applies when talking "hot" vs. "hot + humid." I *think* I prefer cold weather to hot weather, but this Alabamian might have a change of heart after experiencing a real Boston winter (I visited in January, but it was a mild winter). This, a million times this! I never believed wind could make such a difference, but having experienced Chicago a week ago with windchills of below zero, I believe it now! That wind will CUT you. I haven't heard back from assistantships but I believe Kattie the coordinator wrote that we'd hear back by the 11th. Applying to them was so INTENSE! Lol I applied to 10 positions. But I have no clue what the average amount of interviews is or how we'll go about interviewing the day of. When I visited U of A we had two rounds of interviews, you either got a call back or not. So I'm curious how compact the day will be. I'll let you know how it goes! Thanks, emg! I agree the applications were intense - cover letters and even supplemental materials for each one? Seeing that the average was between 5-10, I applied to 8 but I felt like it wasn't enough. I'm sure the applicant pool is strong and I'm wondering if I'll measure up. Needless to say, I'm pretty nervous about how selective these assistantships are going to be!
swimswithsharks
I thought Berkeley offers were supposed to go out this week? The results certainly don't reflect that. Anyone have any info? I'm still waiting too... FIngers crossed!
Hugo_Yu
Hi everyone, I am an international student in Penn State, originally from China, dual-majored in Comparative International Education/Educational Theory and Policy. I am finishing my master thesis in library right now. I felt so sad that I've got 5 rejections from Umich, MSU, UIUC, UC-Irvine and UW-twin. I only have 3 left, UT-Austin, University of Washington at Seattle and Indiana University Bloomington. I applied for Phd degree in Educational Policy Studies/Educational Organization and Leadership. It's really a bad story to get so many rejections. The information I got is, "We strive to support all of our students for the duration of their PhD program and the tuition levels for International students are much much higher than tuition levels for U.S. students." Same answers from at least three universities, and I knew that might be the problem this year. It seems that...I might not able to study with my girlfriend in same school . Only University of Washington left for the same university for both of us. God bless me... I can't bear it any more....I can't focus on my master thesis...It's so nervous and frustrated. iphi

It'll get better. If you really do strike out this year maybe you can focus on getting job experience (it sounds as though you'll have a Master's!) and reapply next year or the year after. Good luck, things really can work out, although I know it doesn't seem like it right now.
